Evans Brasfield's personal motorcycles up for auction at Iconic

Jan 23, 2024

They aren't the rarest or most exotic motorcycles you'll find for sale at the Iconic Motorbikes auction site, but they're sure to be solid builds and probably the most well documented motorcycles you'll find for sale. The two personal motorcycles of our late motorcycle industry media colleague Evans Brasfield are currently up for auction, and the money will go directly to his family.

The motorcycles in question are a nicely modified 2019 KTM 790 Duke and an equally well equipped 2021 Kawasaki KLX300, built to be a lightweight adventure bike. But the motorcycles are not the real reason I'm writing this short piece.

In the U.S. motorcycle media, where differences of opinion, businesses going under, perceived professional injustices, and even petty jealousy often sour the atmosphere, Evans was one of the most widely liked people in the business. I certainly did not know him as well as many others, but when we heard the terrible news last September that he had been killed in a hit-and-run crash, I found myself thinking the same thing as many others. Nobody had a bad word to say about Evans. When you talked to him, he really listened. And when he talked to you, he was truly trying to be helpful, unlike many in this business whose attempts to be helpful are really mansplainy efforts to demonstrate they're a much better rider than you are. Evans was one of the good guys in the business, as well as being a devoted family man to his wife and daughters.

When he turned 60, Evans pondered what was next and decided to push back against the inevitable decline in riding skills that comes with age. Part of that was working on his street and track-riding skills on the 2019 KTM 790 Duke he had modified. Naturally, he detailed the project at motorcycle.com.

Another thing he decided, with his daughters grown and his weekends offering more free time, was to build his off-road riding skills. Instead of going out and buying a huge adventure-touring bike, he bought this 2021 Kawasaki KLX300 and set about turning it into a lightweight adventure bike. From the skid plate and larger fuel tank to a dozen other details, you can read about his modifications at motorcycle.com.

Naturally, you can find even more details and photos of the KTM and the Kawasaki at Iconic Motorbikes. I have no idea how much residual karma still clings to these motorcycles, but I do know that what's there must be good.
