It's MotoGP week in the United States and a side contest appears to have broken out between Italian manufacturers to see who can out-exclusive who. No sooner did Ducati unveil its newest Superleggera model than Aprilia pulled the wraps off its sixth X edition and this one is a track-only version of its RSV4 1100 Factory with a special livery honoring the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Aprilia's X brand is its line of limited-edition performance bikes and, with its stars-and-stripes livery, it's instantly clear this one is aimed at U.S. buyers. Aprilia says just 30 will be built and 25 of them will come to the states.

More than just the hyper-American paint distinguishes the X 250th. Aprilia says this is the most powerful RSV4 they've ever built, putting out a claimed 240 horsepower at 13,750 rpm. The other unique feature is the carbon-carbon brakes like the ones found on the Aprilia RS-GP MotoGP race bike. Naturally, the carbon discs are gripped by special brake pads and the front brake calipers are made of billet aluminum and have cooling fins. If you decide to ride your X 250th on the track, make sure you can go fast enough to get those brakes up to operating temperature.

Aprilia made a few tweaks to its V-four engine to make it the most powerful version yet. The compression ratio was raised, the air intake modified, a racing air filter fitted, and a titanium SC Project exhaust installed. Redline is at 14,100 rpm. Larger coolant and oil radiators help keep temperatures under control if you spend much time near that redline.

Lightweight bits are everywhere, from the magnesium Marchesini wheels to carbon fiber parts and bodywork to titanium pieces. Naturally, the X 250th's MotoGP resemblance continues with its aerodynamic package, which includes the full array of seat wings, tail wings, and under wing, in addition to the distinctive, big front mustache. Also like the RS-GP, the X 250th has carbon fiber fairings that are shaped to create downforce when the bike is leaned over. It all rolls on World Superbike slicks from Pirelli.
"The Aprilia X 250TH is clearly an item for true connoisseurs — something unrivalled," said Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola. "Over the years, the X bikes have become highly sought after for both collectors and for those seeking to experience a thrill that is extremely close to what MotoGP riders feel.”.
And that leads to the question that always comes up with these exclusive motorcycles. How many of those "connoisseurs" will be collectors who place the X 250th on display for a life of quiet contemplation, and how many will truly try to experience "what MotoGP riders feel" and use those tire warmers that are included?
Either way, it's MotoGP week in America and there's no shortage of Italian exotica to mark the occasion.
