Indian has unveiled its new Pursuit models, and no, it's not a police bike. It is, in Indian's words, "the most capable and refined American touring machine on the road," and not coincidentally the price starts at $30,000.
Indian has Roadmasters and Chieftains for touring riders who insist on an air-cooled engine that looks like it's still the 1950s. The Pursuit is built on the Indian Challenger and is aimed at the rider who wants a fully equipped touring motorcycle that still has some traditional American styling but combines that look with thoroughly modern features and technology. From its liquid-cooled PowerPlus V-twin engine to its seven-inch touchscreen display with full connectivity, the Pursuit brings modern components to the tradition-heavy U.S. touring segment.
The Pursuit adds a top box and some new options to the Challenger formula. It comes in two models, each with available Premium Package upgrades.
Indian Pursuit Dark Horse and Pursuit Limited
Finishes distinguish the Dark Horse and Limited, as the former gets Indian's blacked-out treatment on the engine and exhaust while the Limited shines with chrome. Both share the same running gear with the Challenger, as Indian claims an identical 122 horsepower and 128 foot-pounds of torque from the PowerPlus. That makes it Indian's most powerful touring bike and puts it roughly equal to Harley-Davidson's Milwaukee-Eight 117 on torque and well ahead on power. The inverted fork and preload-adjustable rear shock, both with humane levels of suspension travel, and the Brembo brakes show that the Pursuit is more about getting the job done than trying to look retro.
Adding the cargo trunk roughly doubles the storage capacity over the Challenger, giving you 35 gallons of packing space and the luggage can be locked remotely. To keep you comfortable enough to cover long distances, the Pursuit has a new comfort seat, an adjustable windscreen on the frame-mounted fairing, vented lowers and heated grips. Cruise control gives your throttle hand a break.
Indian has lathered on the technology in the Pursuit's seven-inch touch screen. Apple Carplay and GPS turn-by-turn navigation are integrated and additional connectivity features, such as live traffic information and weather overlays, are available through Indian's Ride Command+, which is free for the first year.
Premium Package
The Premium Package includes several tech upgrades, including the ability to adjust the preload of the rear shock through the touchscreen, a new feature on the Pursuits. The electronic adjustment is also available as an option apart from the Premium Package.
The Premium Package also includes a Bosch IMU that adds lean-angle sensitivity to the traction control and ABS. Other features that are part of the package are integrated driving lights in the lower fairings and a heated seat. The Premium Package raises the price $3,000 in the United States.
Indian also has a full range of accessories, naturally, from an adaptive LED headlight that adjusts with lean angle to handlebar risers to sound systems with enough speakers to annoy numerous bystanders or entertain an outdoor party, depending on the setting and your taste in music.
The Challenger has been the Indian of choice among the growing performance bagger crowd, and the Pursuit brings that option to riders who want some of the same performance along with more storage for long-haul rides.
