Q & A with Dax

How long have you been riding and what do you currently ride?

Dax - I started riding in 1991 on street bikes and been enjoying the ride ever since. I currently own a custom 650 twin that started out as a cruiser and is turning into a bobber. I ride a lot of Harleys and Indians when I am on the road at events.

How did you first get interested in riding a motorcycle?

Dax - My first experience on a bike was my cousin's little Honda mini-bike when I was 10 years old. From that day on, whenever I saw a motorcycle my heart started racing!! I can't help it, I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

What is your dream bike?

Dax - Ducati XDiavel

What is the farthest trip you’ve done on your motorcycle?

Dax - 500 miles from Cape Cod to NYC - round trip all in one day!

Where would you love to visit on a motorcycle?

Dax - I plan to and will ride in Italy!!

What is your most memorable experience on a motorcycle to date?

Dax - My favorite ride was alone, (at least to begin with) going from San Diego to Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. This was a deserted highway with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and jagged cliffs. Somewhere just past Las Gaviotas, two bikers seemed to join me on this abandoned highway and over the next hour we took turns passing each other at speeds that should not be reported. I was on my cruiser, one guy was on a Ducati and another rode a GXSR. Eventually, we ended up at a traffic light in Ensenada. I popped up my visor and asked them to point me in the direction of the best fish tacos. They gave me the "welcome to Mexico" treatment and suggested that I follow them. Never questioning if it was a good idea to follow these Mexican bikers down alleys, and narrow dirt paths, I dutifully followed my new friends. To my delight, they did not only lead me straight to the fishing wharf for the freshest fish tacos on Earth, but they also spoke Spanish to the local guys and negotiated free parking for me! "These guys will watch your bike for you," and with that my fellow riders continued to their destination and I had fun watching the locals in the fish market! After an amazing lunch that cost $6, I enjoyed the sounds of local musicians playing on the pier with the sun bouncing on the Pacific Ocean. I missed my buddies on my return to San Diego but often reflect about the natural bond I experienced that day. Bikers....that's all, we were bikers and therefore, friends.

Do you prefer group rides or solo rides?

Dax - I am more of a lone wolf rider - strange I know, considering how many large organized rides I plan throughout the year!

What is the toughest thing you learned on a motorcycle to date?

Dax - My favorite metaphor was learned from riding a motorcycle. Stay balanced and focus on what's in front of you. In life there are so many challenges you must confront. The only way to survive both on a motorcycle and in life is to stay balanced and don't look back. Wind therapy is an actual thing!! It isn't always easy to stay focused and balanced but it's necessary! Trust yourself! Do you remember the first time you tried to shift into first gear? It's scary to pull on the throttle while letting go of the clutch. There's a sweet spot where the gear engages. Let it out too fast, it chokes and you drop the bike. The only way to do it, is to do it! Find that sweet spot and don't look back! It's the same in life!

Name an inspirational riding figure you look up to, and why?

Dax - I'm inspired by Bessie Springfield!! She did the unexpected, was fearless and paved the way for women and minorities of color in the military and on motorcycles. I love her life story!!

What’s your advice to newer riders?

Dax - Ride your ride. Stay in your lane. Don't be concerned with what others are doing or where they are going. Life is not a race but is an adventure waiting to be experienced. No one can be you so do it your way and you'll do it right!
