The tire has gripped great in gravel, dirt, and sand. I have not tested it much in serious mud, the mud I have ridden in it did fine.
Another great point of the tire is that it gives tons of feedback, so when it does start to wash out you can catch it or be prepared for it.
At the price it is a great tire for dual sports. Road grip is fine and never gave me any issues, if you're hard on the front brakes you'll start to see some cupping but that's true for most knobbies.

These are very inexpensive. I bought the pair for less than a decent brand name Moto only rear tire!
I figured I'd put them on for the inspection, then put some "real" off road only tires back on afterwards.
I can tell you now that they work SO well on pavement!
Smooth and quiet, with great cornering traction and very decent traction for braking. And they mounted up super easy- popped up onto their beads easy and true, and they balanced with minimal weights added- really just the weight needed to compensate for the factory rimlock.
Made in Japan, to obviously high standards.
After my road ride I was thinking "well if these don't totally suck in the dirt I'm leaving them on!
Guess what? They are very decent off road too. Here in Missouri we have loamy soil with rocks- LOTS of rocks. And in my trails in the woods, lots of exposed roots too.
I am impressed with them in these conditions.
No chunking from the constant "spin in the dirt/hook up on the rock" traction challenges. Almost all tires chunk here. But so far, not these.
Due to the round profile of the tire and the lack of aggressive side knobs they do slide easier than aggressive off road only tires when turning, but they are predictable. And fun. I like them. A lot.
Take into account these facts:
XR 400's only make about 35 HP, and they are tuned to chug and lug nicely. They are lightweight at about 265 wet when compared to most Dual Sports.
And I am an Expert level rider. Your results may vary.
But I'm posting this review because I've been buying tires for Dirt Bikes that also see pavement for years, and these are the best I've ever ridden.
I'll buy another set when these are toast!
I don't know about treadlife yet, It's only been a couple hundred miles- but so far the wear is almost zero.
I'm betting on 2000 for the rear and double that for the front, based on how they look right now.
I hope IRC keeps producing these tires. They've been making them for years, but I've just discovered them!
