Reviews & Questions
What has also impressed me about the Pinlock system on the Shoei is that the visor insert extends to cover such a large area of the shield. The field of vision is great. The example pic doesn't do it justice.
Some have noted that under certain conditions that there can be some internal reflection artifacts, but I have gotten that even with non-Pinlock shields. As long as you are looking at the road instead of trying to look at the inner surface of the shield, you will not be bothered at all. The important thing is that there is no dangerous fogging to interfere with your vision.
I initially purchased a clear insert to go with the shield. It has worked so well for me that I have since purchased a dark smoke insert for those cold but sunny days.
I bought the light smoke color because I wanted something to help for the bright days when I didn't have sunglasses with me. I love the light smoke; I have ridden at night with it and I can still see fine. It was a large concern of mine originally but I don't think it impairs my visibility at all.
I wasn't a big fan of having to drop $40 when I already had a face shield for my helmet, but the fog issue is very dangerous and I think it's worth it in the end.
The shield does fog up somewhat easy (that's more a function of helmet geometry) but it also clears up incredibly fast. I'll be getting a pinlock lens in the near future.
I've only had my Qwest for a week, but something I was reminded of as I replaced the shield is how thick Shoei's shields are. I came from an HJC CS-RD (budget helmet) and looking back now that shield was incredibly thin compared to this.
Con: Expensive piece of plastic. With insert in place the visor also catches on upper seal of helmet. Did I say this is a ridiculously expensive piece of plastic?
Summary: If you have excess beer money and live in wet/cold then ok... otherwise shield + insert are setting you back ~$80 so think hard about how easy it is to crack your current visor to dissipate minor condensation...
I have a Zox Rush Rx and it does not have the holes pre-drilled on the face shield, is there anyway that I can adapt the pinlock kit to it?
Actually I have two face shields: one with the pinlock tabs and one without. I keep the pinlock liner permanently installed on the one shield and just switch shields as needed. I do this because the pinlock liner is somewhat fragile and putting it in and out a lot can easily damage the silicone seal which will ruin the anti-fog function.
I just leave the pinlock shield on the helmet all the time in the spring and in the fall. If I'm going on a trip I just bring the pinlock shield and leave the regular shield at home. You never know what weather you will encounter on the road and I want to be ready. Carrying an extra shield on a trip is a PITA. Face shields do not pack well.
Hope this helps.
I did not know that, so I uninstalled the insert, added silicone caulk in suspicious place and installed it again. It worked, but took a long time to clean up the caulk.
While doing that, I noticed that the plastic pins are eccentric, so by rotating them you can make the insert sealing tight or loose. No tools needed, can be done in seconds.
Just straighten the shield enough to release pressure on the pin, then rotate the pin so it pushes the insert further to the shield center, that makes seal tighter.
