Shark Spartan Helmet

Heavyweight helmets beware, your days are numbered. The Spartan is a lean fighter armed with a fiberglass shell and aggressive spoilers for stability at speed. While other helmets are stuck in the Bronze Age, Shark utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics to hone the Spartan into its chiseled form.

Everything you need to operate in peak physical and mental condition is optimized within the Spartan. Large ram-air intake vents located on the chin bar and crest channel cool air in while hot air gets expelled out via the venturi created by the twin spoiler design. Your vision will be clear thanks to the MaxVision anti-fog system. Your hearing will be acute since Shark takes a full-system approach to sound dampening. Your neck will not strain since the Spartan is both lightweight and volumetrically optimized for drag reduction. You will fight your four-wheeled foes, drop knees, drag elbows and emerge victorious.

  • Lightweight fiberglass construction
  • Pinlock MaxVision insert lens included
  • Aerodynamic dual spoiler
  • Shark skin side covers reduce noise

  • D-Ring chin strap closure
  • Autoseal shield system for sound and weatherproofing

Spartan Carbon vs Schubert C3 Pro
I have both Schubert C3 Pro and This Shark Spartan Carbon.

Speaking for the carbon version this helmet is by far the best looking helmet I have seen.

It ventilates much better than the Schubert C3 Pro, (I use the Schubert as a cold weather helmet) But it is not as cool as Shark Evo-One helmet.

This also feels sturdy, much more so than the Schubert and it is much lighter (Schubert in my size is 1650gr, this one is 1390) and believe me you do feel the difference.

Schubert is also very stable at speed but after 100mph you do feel a slight lift on the helmet. it tugs your neck up from the back. This does not. The winglets work pretty well. I assume they are also the reason this helmets top vent works much, much better than the Schubert's.

This also feels more quiet for some reason. The visor does not have a locking mechanism but I have never had is accidentally open. But to be able to get the best seal you sometimes do need to push the visor down from above (not the handle on the side)

Also The D dents on the Schubert are awful. If you keep the visor to the lowest dent to get some wind to your face the dent is so shallow that when you start speeding up just a little bit the visor closes. The D dents on the spartan is much stronger. I never had is change position on me without my input.

Also the sun visor is darker than the Schubert and comes down lower.

As you can see from my review I like this helmet. But I will still keep the Schubert for cold weather riding since it has a better neck roll and keeps you warmer. But at any weather above 20 Celsius. I would prefer the Spartan.

2800 mile review
Just got a normal spartan 1 day before a 2800 mile road trip so I think I can give a fair review of it.

First the bad; even with it broken in some, I personally find it's tight around the jaw; which get's annoying after spending 8+ hours on the bike.
But that's it really

The good
1. It's fairly quiet. My previous lid is a schuberth S2, and I found the Spartan to actually be a little bit quieter than it.
2. It has a great sunvisor. I wear glasses most of the times and the sunvisor is really fantastic on it. Come's down all the way and is decently dark. Much better than my schuberth which only came down half way and wasn't nearly as dark.
3. It's very stable. Though I ride a sport's tourer with a large windscreen, there's little buffeting, even at 95+mph; spoilers do their job I guess.
4. It's pretty light weight. I opted for a normal one verses the lighter carbon fiber version (fan of all white helmets) and I was shocked at how light it was. Definitely nice for long riding.

Those are the standouts for me. A word about safety, even though revzilla say it's only DOT approved at this point, it's a ECE 22.05 approved lid, no question. And Shark has always rated high in safety for SHARP testing, so I feel very confident in this helmet if I go down.

All in all, it's a great helmet. I think it's a very good lid with some fantastic features for a great price. I definitely recommend checking this out as a cheaper but equal quality helmet to Arai, Shoei and Schuberth.

Love it!
My previous helmet, a Shoei RF 1000, was purchased while I worked for a dealership and I got it at their cost. I loved that helmet, so when it came time to get a new one I was determined to get another Shoei. That was until I looked at the cost of getting one with the features I wanted. I wanted one with a drop down visor, as I ride a lot at night. I also wanted the pinlock system. The only Shoei options were the GT-Air or the Neotech lines. Both cost well over $500. I was really impressed with the reviews of the Shark Spartan helmet and it came with the features that I wanted for $340. I decided to give it a try. I love it! I love the drop down shield and the pinlock. It fits a little tight on my cheeks, but I expect that to lessen with time. The other thing that I absolutely love is the stability of this helmet. I had gotten used to having my head buffeted around when I rode. When I wore this helmet I noticed a large and immediate reduction in buffeting. It's amazing! For the price and features included I couldn't have chosen a better helmet. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Speed-r Carbon vs Spartan Carbon
Note, I'm talking from the Carbon version of the helmet perspective, with the only major difference is weight.

All aspects of the speed-r seem to have been improved/simplified upon with the Spartan.
1. The locking mechanism for the visor is a lot simpler, I can properly close with my gloves on; something I couldn't do on the speed-r; this is a VERY big improvement.
2. The shape of the helmet is a lot more oval, a lot better for upright riding.
3. Removing the visor has been simplified, just pull on it when its at its highest position and it pops out.
4. integrated chin curtain, quite a nice bonus.
5. proper cut outs for speakers and microphone.

As mentioned in the video, unfortunately it doesn't have exit vents towards the back to create a bit of suction for the air inside the helmet, but I haven't experienced any discomfort, yet, because of this, but I can see the potential problems when it's really hot outside.

I'm giving this 4 stars, because i'm reserving the 5stars for the carbon which has the added benefit of being a bit lighter (and cooler).

Initial impression & 20 min. ride
I just received my helmet yesterday so this is on my initial impression: ordered a medium matte black finish

The helmet is super light, has a really clean look all around. Vents are ridiculously easy to operate and surely won't be an issue with gloves on, but ill talk about that when I get to riding with it. Shield moves effortlessly, but doesn't appear to actually lock in to the closed position but that's the only flaw I could find.

Put the helmet on and it fits really tight. I have a 57.5cm head so medium size was dead on for me. I consider myself to have a intimidated oval head and I felt a little hotspot on the back of my head but I think that was just the way the linger was sitting because I took it off and put it back on and it was fine, just a little tight like a new helmet normally feels.

As for riding, this helmet is a dream. It's currently about 70 degrees here in Phoenix so I don't need my vents to be open to be comfortable, but the airflow is out of this world. I opened the chimney vent with ease and if completely blew away the airflow that my Airmada had. I know people have said the internal visor and the external visor both fog up easily, but flip open the chin vent and that problem is solved. I should note I haven't had time to install the pinlock visor yet to prevent fog so take that in to consideration. The vents are definitely meant for upright riding and flow a sh*tload of air through them. The helmet is absurdly quiet. My Airmada was a little on the loud side but I can barely hear anything, even going 80 one freeway. I can't wait to put my SMH10R in and see how well that sounds now that the ambient noise is nearly absent!

Again this is my first impression and first ride review. I commute ~75 miles each day to and from work so ill be sure to post a review when I get some actual miles on it.

So far I would 110% recommend this helmet to any commuter

unbelievably quiet and unbelievably low cost for the functionality
First things first:
Revzilla didn't have the colour-scheme I wanted so 'handsup' - I confess to buying elsewhere. BUT ... I always get my stuff here and really appreciate how helpful the reviews have been with helping me to chose my gear in the past, so posting this up to keep the good deeds going :)

This is sooooooo quiet - I hear so little noise that I'm not having to LOOK (ok ... listen) for wind noise. If you've ever been in a completely silent room that's so quiet that you start to hear a ringing noise in your ears then ... this is how quiet the wind-noise is on this helmet!

However as soon as I attached my headset and Drift Ghost S to the sides, the noise started - so I'm going to try the drift mounted on top and am going to use a set of internal speakers and mic that don't have an external remote on the side of the helmet and simply connect via bluetooth to my mobile phone.

The internal sun visor is awesome. And the visor mechanism is very clever - gotta love the way you can just pull off the face shield so easily without use of tools.

Manoeuvrability for should-checks is really good too - far better than my clunky old Shark Evoline Series 3.

My ONLY niggle would be (IF I was REEEEEALLY struggling to find one) ... it can get a bit warm. I think the really tight padding, which no-doubt contributes to the sound-proofing, makes it a bit warm.

Otherwise ... Light. Quiet. Has sun-visor. And cheap!

Bang for the buck!
I received my new Spartan helmet a few weeks ago and I wanted to give it some time on the road before giving it a thorough review. Here are my "two cents".

Features:
The simplicity of the design is what drew me to this helmet. I love that it only has two places for airflow vents; chin and at the top. I also love that the face shield opens and closes very smoothly without too much effort. I love that the drop down visor comes down and covers your entire face (I hate the 3/4 or 1/2 drop down visors). The retractable awning is a HUGE plus!

Fitment:
I'm intermediate oval head shaped and the Small fit me spot on. No hot spots or discomfort anywhere.

Style:
Nothing much to add here, other than it is total bad ass. The dual spoilers give this helmet a nice edgy appearance.

Road Test:
I still wear my sure fire earplugs when riding, but I did try it out without them on the freeway, going about 65mph, and the extraneous noise is pretty damn quiet. The tight seal with the face shield makes all the difference. Still, I will wear my earplugs when riding...health and safety first.

Conclusion:
Overall, I love this helmet. I can't find anything negative to say about it. One additional note, for those trying to find a smoke face shield for this helmet, I verified with Shark HQ that the SKWAL face shield fits the Spartan's. Apparently, when they designed both helmets, there was little to no changes made to the the face shields. I bought a SKWAL smoke face shield and it fits perfectly.

First Impressions
I've yet to ride with this - just purchased and I'm in New England so, it's going to be about a month.

I can give first impressions.

1. It's a tight fit. I ordered the medium and have the same size in an Icon carbon and this one is much tighter. It's not uncomfortable, just tighter and I expect that it will relax a bit after usage.
2. If you watch the video, there seems to be a bit of ado about this 'sunsetter' feature of a chin curtain. Must be an older model they are using for the display, but, my chin curtain works nothing like it seems that it does in the video. Mine relies on a memory piece of plastic and it pulls out and sometimes won't stay. It is also uncomfortable under my chin with the plastic 'teeth' biting into the skin behind my chin. Actually a very poor design if you ask me. For the price, I expected a bit more quality in this feature.
3. The sun shield is fantastic. It lowers beautifully and it covers your view field completely. No sun rays coming in here. It is also pretty dark. Best feature of the helmet by far and the best reason to purchase.
4. The chin strap is clunky, at best. It's a D-ring closure and the snap to finalize the connection lies way up inside of the helmet abutting the cheek pads. It really is a pita to get this thing snapped. Also, the padding for the chin strap is not connected directly to the strapping, so, you have to manuever it in place. A bit annoying, again, at this price. I was hoping for the ratchet closure.
5. Pin lock - this would be my first experience with pinlock and, I have to say, if this is the solution to fogging, it seems to be a poor one. The pinlock insert really hinders viewing clearly out of the shield. Without it, sight is perfect. With it, sight is distorted.

More later once the riding is truly upon us here in NH!

great all purpose helmet and saved my neck and brain
Not sure about the horrible review regarding leaks and Shark being a bad helmet manufacturer because that's not true. I bought this in August of 2017 based on both the reviews here and professional reviews regarding weight, noise reduction and design.

I found the reviews to be accurate. Helmet fits snug at first for forms to your head. the overall quietness is nice, and the drop down sun shield is excellent. Peripheral vision is good and the main outer visor is great open to any position you want, even at interstate speeds without any issue of being moved or flexed.

Fogging can be an issue; mostly in cooler weather, so it's a good idea to use an anti-fog wipe regularly, which greatly helped...Mostly it's from using my balaclava to keep my head and neck warm and glasses behind the visors of the shark. once moving it's not really an issue, but keep that in mind.

As far as effectiveness in the wind, it's a split tail. On my old Street Bob I had to tuck my chin in or my neck would want to snap back hard. Using the windshield made that a non issue; however. On my new Fatboy, even without a windshield, wind at interstate speeds was not an issue at all. Likely a combination of bike design and seating position, giving the cruiser labeling of this helmet a worthy thumbs up.

Recently I was riding with my wife on a rather twisty road when rain came out of nowhere. going around a turn (not fast) my rear tire caught some fresh road dirt/oil and gravel forcing me into a ditch before I knew what was going on. We flipped, landed on our backs and while the rest of my gear did it's job, my body was pretty banged up. My Spartan also appeared to have been through a nasty crash landing, but in spite of seemingly everywhere else in my body hurting, my neck and head were just fine.

This Spartan is now retired, but a new one is on the way. From a cost to comfort and safety standpoint, I'm happy I went with this helmet and will gladly order another.

As far as the one reviewer complaining of the rain...That unexpected and rather harsh rainstorm hit us pretty hard and it took us a while before we found a gas station with a canopy to ride the storm out. I had both vents open and my front shield slightly open...No water on my head at all. The outside of my visor was wet, but that's what happens when it rains...things get wet; just not my head or helmet liner. I'm sure the reviewer just got an unlucky blemished helmet, which totally sucks for him, but was not my experience at all.

Great helmet. Comfortable, quiet and saved my neck and head...hard to get better than that.

Out of the box this helmets visor does not seal! Despite adjusting the visor mounts per manufacturers instruction. Wind and water comes straight into the helmet at the top seal. I won't be buying shark helmets again! What a waste of money!

How does the visor lock down in the closed position? Or does even lock in place at all?
Chris S on Jul 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not have a visor lock but if you push down on the visor from the top it seals pretty well.

But if you only tug from the tab on the visor it does not necessarily seal well.

I did not have any problems with the visor seal, Also the visor seal mechanism is adjustable.
