Scorpion EXO-AT950 Helmet

Scorpion has redefined a segment, melding the best features of touring helmets with the versatility of an off-road lid. Scorpion EXO-AT950 Helmet is the all-in-one swiss army knife of the helmet world. Excellent performance, right out of the box
I purchased this helmet yesterday, halfway through a 700 mile round trip ride. I tossed my old one, donned the new one, and immediately hit the road on a 350 mile ride home. In short, I'm very pleased with the Scorpion EXO-AT950.

The inside padding on this Scorpion is very snug, but not uncomfortable. The key selling point for me was the interior-mounted visor that didn't interfere with my glasses, and the modular design, to which I've grown accustomed. Upon purchasing, I immediately removed the peak visor and installed the side port covers, which were easy to replace, only taking a couple of minutes. Riding a V-Star 1300T with the tall windshield, the noise level was average. With earplugs, the noise dropped considerably, as one would expect. My trip lasted all day, with speeds up to 80 mph, a temperature range between 50-90 deg F, and altitudes between 6000-8000 ft. The weather was clear, so I cannot comment on performance in wet conditions. The ventilation was sufficient, and comfortable the entire time. The shapes of the chin bar and internal sun visor (midline nose cut outs) took some getting used to, but the visor and chin bar module are very easy to operate with one hand. The face shield is a little stiff to operate one handed. The chin strap is comfortable, thanks to the long pads extending below the neck padding. Lastly, I was surprised by the high quality available at this affordable price. I am happy with this purchase, and would highly recommend it.

Puts more expensive brands on notice!
Wow, I will just say up front you should get this helmet if you're considering it! I am convinced there is no better dual sport helmet out there, even if money were no object (well OK it will depend on your priorities).

First, I have previously owned the Arai XD-4, and this helmet is superior for my purposes. The Arai flows more air, and is lighter, but lacks the drop down sun visor or modular opening capability. It also fogs up worse than a car with a couple inside. I just rode with the Scorpion in heavy rain, and it didn't even have a spot of moisture on the lens. The drop down shade visor fogs a little worse than the visor itself, but this was only noticeable when stopped and no air was flowing.

I wear earplugs so it's hard to compare, but for me it is just about as quiet as the Arai, in fact thanks to the recessed speaker pockets I think I hear my music/comms more clearly in the Scorpion. And those pockets hide your speakers behind the cheek pad fabric, so my ears are more comfortable in the Scorpion than the Arai. As others have noted, the Scorpion is a little tight in the cheeks when closed. I am a 60 cm but went up to an XL after trying both on in a store. It still fits snugly but is more comfortable. I cannot speak to long ride comfort and if it develops any pressure points.

The ventilation is probably the biggest weakness of this helmet, I think they should have put more vents on the front and back of the top of the helmet. The one vent works, and you can feel the air when it's open, but I think they could have done more. The mouth vent works well and flows a lot of air to your face. But if you get into some slow technical trails you can always just flip it open and rock it trials style. I haven't tried it with goggles yet but that would be another option for hot weather or tight trail work if you want your chin protected.

So with all this in mind, we come to price, and this is where Scorpion puts the other brands on notice! I would personally choose this helmet over the Arai even if the price wasn't a factor, but then you do factor it in and the Scorpion is half the price! Same goes for Shoei, and AGV is a little more affordable but still more than $100 more than the Scorpion. That's money you could be spending on new tires, luggage or whatever else you might need!

The bottom line is, unless you really really need the lightest helmet or the most air flow, then this is your helmet of choice. Why pay 2x or even 4x more (Schuberth) when this helmet provides excellent features and comfort at a lower price?

Just buy it already
I've only had one other helment (Icon Variant) so keep that in mind.

This helmet flows more air, is quieter, cheaper and was more usable for my kind of ADV touring.

Just got it on Friday and promptly put 600 miles on it this last weekend, about half dirt half tarmac.

Obviously very well thought out features. If I had to pick a negative, it would be the drop down sun visor. It doesn't extend down far enough, so you get a visible 'line' in your line of sight. Small nitpicky thing.

The sun visor blocks enough sun that I only need the drop down shield when I'm facing into direct sunlight.

If it's a good fit for your head, you will love this helmet.

AT950
I've bought this model around 2weeks ago,
had wonderful 10~20mins city rides or simple joyrides

View / Vision / Style
this model will fit you, IF you are riding naked bikes
I'm riding a MV Agusta Brutale Dragster 800
and it fits perfectly. as this helmet has huge wind shield
the vision is great the only thing that they could have done better is the wind shield lockage, there are 3 level of lockage on this shield, it has a rather very wide range so even if you close your wind shield to a minimum level, the open gap is pretty huge and most likely anything will be sucked in.

Noise
because of the cheap or cost saving result of chin guards
it flows tons of air thus the noise level is as described from Revzilla's review, its "RELATIVELY" quite, ive done 30~80mph its okay for short rides but for a longer route, you might want to get a pair of ear plugs.

External Peak / Internal Sun Visor
they are all good Peaks are needed when you are riding in a sunny day, internal sun visor is dark enough even during the day or night. if you have a good eye sight, you could probably use this internal visor during night rides in the city to avoid any high beams or flashy HID headlights.

Size / Fitment
I used to have a Shoei GT_Air Large which fits me perfectly i mean literally perfect. and i was Advised from Revzilla that if i were to wear a Large Size GT_Air, i would probably not have any fitment issue on this helmet if i ordered a Large size as well. but guess what the helmet is rather a bit narrow on the jaws/cheeks so it crushes my face/cheeks and once rode with this helmet for about an hour, it started to hurt my jaws like i chewed a gum for a whole hour. i think its because of its modular design, somehow when you close your helmet, the helmet tightens the jaw/cheek part very much, which was tighter than i ever expected.

so if you like this helmet you might want to watch the sizing or fitment and maybe wear another Scorpion helmets to get the perfect sizing.

Best bang for the buck
Wear size Large with my Klim F4 dirtbike helmet and Shoei street helmet. Based on other reviews ordered XL in anticipation of it fitting small and glad I did. Cheeks where still a bit tight but after 1500km of riding have loosened up a bit.
Bill is not noticeable at highway speeds on the KTM 1190R.
Sena 20S installed with not problems
Love the visor although I feel like Maverick in Top Gun when its down.
Rarely ride with the main visor down even at highway speed as its too hot. Ventilation is so so and my only real complaint.
Ridden in heavy rain, no leaks. I wear ear plugs always if on the freeway or long ride. Normal helmet noise IMO - nothing to write home about but not really that important to me as I have never had a quiet helmet.
For Canadian buyers, placed my order on a Monday night and was at my door by Friday the same week! Awesome. Same experience with other purchases from Revzilla.

Good helmet, but the visor is largely cosmetic
I do like this helmet. For the kind of riding I do (mostly hot-weather, about 60:40 on/off pavement) I won't buy anything but a modular. After having my HJC IS MAX II survive a crash intact (with a couple scratches), I figured it was time to buy a new one so I'd have a passenger spare. Landed with this. Was somewhat terrified by all the cheek-pad comments, and it was true, the new pads are tight.... in my case for like the first three or four rides. Now the helmet fits exactly as it should, snug. Just back from a 1300 mi trip to Baja, it was great, no fatigue from wearing at, at all.

PROS: The face-shield is beautiful, all of the stop points between shut and wide open are appropriately stiff, I actually rode with it slightly open (first notch from closed) to increase ventilation (see CONS).

The modular flip up mechanism is nice, and is comparable to the HJC. On that note, one nice thing about the sun visor, it actually protects the clear face shield from being scratched when it (or the entire hemet) is in the open position. This is nice, as I've replaced three $20 HJC face shields in only 6 months... they scratch if you look at them wrong!

Top ventilation on the helmet works relatively well, I can feel the air being drawn across my head, even at sub-freeway speeds.

Great internal eyeshade (could be darker, yes), with a good solid flip down mechanism. I do worry it would chop off my nose in a crash if it's down, but that goes for most of them I suspect.

CONS:
I'd buy this helmet again, but here are the problems that Scorpion could fix in the next iteration:

The visor is almost worthless for blocking sunlight. It is non-adjustable, and when you look up with the helmet on, there is literally a laughably miniscule chunk of the top horizon that this thing blocks, relative to the helmet without it. I can't understand how they let that go, as it is the oft-crowed about selling feature of this helmet. It seriously needs to be hard-adjusted down a couple of degrees, at least, to be of any sun-blocking value (to me anyhow).

The visor does catch a fair amount of air on the freeway. After I finally pulled it off on my Baja trip (which was easily done with a peso, kudos), I was absolutely delighted at the reduction in buffetting at 60mph+. Given it's minimal value in blocking the sun, I'm in no hurry to put it back on (except that it looks kinda bad ass).

Lower ventilation is imperceptible between open and closed, at all speeds. Glad at least the top works well!

Again, overall I'm not intentionally steering anyone away from this helmet, I do like it a lot. But please... it ain't no Schuberth E1, not even close, and any vendor or reviewer who claims that's the case is putting you on.

Best purchase I've made to date
Lightweight and perfect. Much better than my old HJC that this is replacing. looks killer, fits perfectly and is loaded with features. Its definitely my new favorite piece of gear. At freeway speeds my old HJC would get buffeted by the way my V-strom directs air (other v-strom riders will know) but this helmet is flawless through all of it. No buffeting now! I'll definitely buy this again when the time comes to buy another.

It's a modular
Don't expect the same quiet and comfort from a solid helmet. that said, it is quieter and has better peripheral vision than my GMAX. The EXO-AT950 has the best ventilation I've experienced yet, from anything in the modular bracket. Fit is intermediate oval, as stated and snug. I ordered up one size and have a great fit. I am perfectly satisfied with the helmet and very happy with the service I've received from Rezilla. I am recommending this helmet and RevZilla when friends ask.

Great ADV Helmet for the $$$
I decided to get this helmet because a combination of my streetfighters styling as well as the overall look and experience with Scorpion. I am not disappointed at all in this purchase. I do recommend getting a tinted visor though. If you don't a windshield like my bike you may tweak your neck with the sun visor at high speeds so I would recommend not installing it at all and going with the fighter look. I was able to easily attach my already existing Sena SM10C to the helmet but will be getting the helmet sticker as the clamp is too thing and both my 10H and C wobble and don't feel very sturdy clipped to the helmet. Over all a great purchase, a little noisy on the high speed and a bit of the scorpion whistle at lower speeds with the visor open but thats to be expected. In the end I wouldn't trade this helmet for anything unless it was its $700 competitor.

Life saver
The first thing to say is that this helmet saved me from serious injury when I t-boned an SUV at 40 mph. It took 3 hits (faceshield hit my windshield, right front hit the side of the SUV, back hit the pavement) and I came through it with no head injury. It's light weight, and the field of view is very good.
On the con side, it could use more ventilation, and I found it wildly optimistic to say that the face shield won't fog. I tried to use the optional visor but found it to noisy.
If you have a long oval shaped head, order at least one size up or it will be too tight. This is more a function of my head shape than any fault with the helmet.
