Saint Unbreakable Jeans

The Saint Unbreakable Jeans are the made of the world's strongest, tear resistant denim. 133 times stronger than your average Levis, Unbreakable Denim is designed specifically for riding, boasting a 3.67 second average slide time and meeting the CE EN13595 standard for abrasion resistance. Cotton is blended with 66% UHMWPE Dyneema and triple stitched for rugged wearability unmatched by other moto jeans on the market. The tailored slim fit eliminates bulk without being too tight, and the enamel-coated buttons give these jeans a subtle but refined style.

Saint's Unbreakable Denim is woven with a unique double warp beam allowing Saint to weave the worlds strongest fiber, Dyneema's Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, in the warp and weft while having a denim face. The result is a denim with 360º torsional strength; motorcycle tested for impact, burst and abrasion resilience.

Fit:

  • Cut: Slim fit

Plain denim is more Unbreakable, these $$$$$$ jeans melted.
I am normally an ATGATT guy -- All the Gear, All the Time -- after one too many motorcycle accidents (1). I'm not one to take a chance, and as such I always wear full leathers or sincerely beefy, bombproof textiles on sportbikes or touring machines. But I recently got a Harley 48 to cruise casually, so I wanted to find some decent riding jeans for the HOG trots.

I have had riding jeans before, I have a pair from Dainese and a pair from Rev'It that are OK -- they are lightly armored and looked pretty cool, but they're actually pretty hot and anyway they are way too tight for chillin'. Then I bought some Rokker Original Raw jeans, which are much more relaxed, but about as breathable as a fire suit. No chillin' in those unless it's near zero on the Kelvin scale.

So I was back to wearing my 501's or a pair of Carhardt work pants when puttering around on the Harley. They look right, they breathe well, and they're never given me any kind of problem, except that I like to putter as quickly as possible sometimes, I like to drag the hard parts around the tight turns of the Bronx River Parkway or Route 22 or the Seven Lakes Drive up in Harriman State Park, and I knew the Levi's wouldn't leave much skin in a skid.

So I was really excited when I saw these Saint ``Unbreakable Jeans'' -- they are apparently 100 times more abrasion resistant than basic denim, and they are made in one piece with the Dyneema® woven into the cotton to keep you cool. And the best part is, they look fantastic and are lightweight, without being so tight that you can't move. Worst part is, they are $600. Oh, and you can't actually wear them when riding a Harley.

As soon I got these ``Unbreakable Jeans'' in the mail, I threw them on and took my little 48 for a quick trip up to Bear Mountain. Comfy and full of confidence, I had a great day dragging everything I could all the way there and back, with no concern for my epidermis. They really weren't that hot, even on a 90-degree day, and everything seemed peachy. Until I got home and realized they had *melted* right down to my boots. Yes, the $600 ``Unbreakable Jeans'' had MELTED.

More specifically, the Dyneema® had melted away from the inside of my right leg, I assume from the heat of the exhaust, leaving only the cotton weave intact. And I wasn't doing anything I hadn't done in my Levi's, mind you, or my Carhardt's. Or in plenty of other pants made by BMW, Dainese, Rev'It or Rokker -- all of which I've worn on my Harley. Only the most expensive pair of motorcycle pants I have ever bought *melted* when I was riding my motorcycle as normal. Is that a good quality in motorcycle pants, I ask you? Is that ``Unbreakable?''

These Saint products are apparently made by Harley guys, presumably for riding Harleys that are turned on, and not just rolling down the hill with the engine off. And they are incapable of doing that. Revzilla customer service said they consider that kind of damage ``much the same as damage produced during a crash, or wear and tear associated with use.'' Did they mean just one use? Or is melting just part of the aging process? One-day aging on a Harley Davidson?

Revzilla suggested I wrap my exhaust, and included a link to a number of products -- one of which is the very same Accel High-Temperature Exhaust Wrap that currently IS wrapped around my exhaust pipes. Maybe I should wrap them again before the ``Unbreakable Jeans'' are truly unbreakable? Or maybe you need to use an amount of wrap that is equal in price to the jeans? (12 rolls.)

They also offered to refund me 20% of the purchase price for the melted ``Unbreakable Jeans'' or the same amount off of a replacement pair -- I guess I could use that extra money then to buy another pair of pants to wear *over* the ``Unbreakable Jeans'' when I want to wear them for an activity as punishing as riding my motorcycle on a sunny New York day.

I'll just keep these ``Unbreakable Jeans'' to wear when I've riding my Vespa (do I now wrap the exhaust?), or skateboarding, or walking on treacherously slippery surfaces. Will the ``Unbreakable Jeans'' melt if I'm rollerblading really fast? Will I have to avoid those steam vents on the New York City streets?

Maybe I'll just cut up an old pair of 501's and patch these ``Unbreakable Jeans'' by Saint. After all, they were $600.

Stylish and Protective
The Saint website provides very detailed sizing info, according to which my 38W 36L pants are true to size for a slim fit. A disposable paper label on the pants reads “this 360? impact and abrasion resistant denim is 750% stronger than regular denim” This does not seem to be in line with the claim on the product info page that reads “133 times stronger than your average Levis”. What is meant by “strength” is not clear to me anyway but the claim on abrasion resistance is: “Motorcycle CE standard tests 3.67 seconds (approx 45 meters slide time)”. As far as I could learn during my research, regular denim comes out under half a second and most motorcycle jeans fall short of the 4 seconds barrier that would yield a CE Level 1 certificate. Some do and a few even exceed 7 seconds so as to qualify for Level 2 (please read my technical analysis with caution as I am no expert). I wish they were available at 36” inseam like these Unbreakable Jeans from Saint are.

Wearing them without washing as long as possible is strongly recommended. This advice takes place on the conventional tab with caring instructions and it is duplicated in large, bold capital prints on the front left pocket inside the pants. I am surprised that such a tough fabric is so sensitive to washing.

They are so stylish that they almost have nothing in common with Kevlar reinforced motorcycle jeans, except their claimed abrasion resistance. They feel as cool and light as regular jeans, if not lighter. I cannot wear my shin/knee protectors and hard shorts underneath due to their slim fit. They don’t fit over my calf size boots but they slide nicely into the boot shafts, without the upper leg portions becoming baggy.

If you look at them as classy jeans, they are way too expensive. If you look at them as motorcycle jeans, they are still expensive. If you look at them as a blend that combines elegance with protection, their price tag may make more sense but whether or not this price is justified depends on how important this particular mix is for you. They are also among a few motorcycle jeans that are available at 36” inseam. I hope this amalgamation of form and function becomes widespread, so that the price goes down.

I cannot comment on durability, yet, but they appear to be sturdy. Only time will tell how well they hold up, though.

Meh
For the price of these jeans, you are paying for style and somewhat comfort. I say somewhat because the metal ring they have above the right pocket is very painful while riding until you break in the pants and they stretch out enough. Until then, enjoy the discomfort from this annoying piece that you cannot remove.

I wore these for about 2 weeks. The color faded fast and you see a lot of white come through from where the stretch areas are (mostly knees and thighs for me). It stretch so much that I was concerned about the integrity of these jeans. I called RevZilla who then contacted Saint. They explained to me this is normal and not defected.

The pants continued to wear down and RevZilla was kind enough to give me store credit back for them.

I really did love the style of these jeans and wish the quality was a little better. I have hope for Saint and their mission but I keep getting disappointed.

Breakable.
The top button of the jeans broke within the first 20 minutes of wear, perhaps this was a fluke although how can we promote Unbreakable jeans when the first fault are the buttons. Unacceptable.

On the other hand the material feels fantastic I don't know how but the cooling effect is real, if you ever try a pair on you will know what everyone is saying.
The material itself is cooling on your skin and feels very unique to say the least.

The black dip was disappointing instantly I could see the seams had faults of PURE WHITE Dyneema showing this alone was worth the return.
The fit was true to the waist, I am 6'1 and 150 lbs with a size 28-30 waist.
The jeans were fine in the waist but the legs were tight I would have wanted a 32 if not a full return for fit.

I spoke with Saint directly and soon there will be new advancements in Dyneema production that will produce actual black UUHMPE, aka Dyneema and I am sure they will make a pair using that material until then I suggest go with the blue pair but on the other hand the way they might wear with time may be really interesting with black and white contrast breaking out at the seams.

RevZilla did a stellar job and had this package to me before I could even really worry about it so bang up job there fellas I will return in the future. Both stars go to you guys at RevZilla as for the jeans, sorry Saint, my pair were breakable within 20 minutes and that's unacceptable period.

Almost perfect
I took a chance picking these up for nearly half off after I read the reviews of the dyneema melting. I don't doubt it, but I haven't had any problem riding a couple of hours most days, for a month. I'm 5'10, 165 and the 32'' fits better than any jeans I've worn.

I wear them off the bike as much as on it. They're that comfortable and that good of a fit and style. I try to make as many things I own multiple use to cut down on what I own, and these are worth two pairs of jeans--a riding jean and a pair for off the bike. As an example, I've worn them twice while giving speeches in front of hundreds of people for my work in New Delhi and Seattle, at an English Premier League conference and Microsoft summit.

I'd give them one more star if they came with sleeves for the slim seasoft knee and hip armor.

Great jeans that protect too!
These fit true to my regular size with a slimmer cut in the leg. I wear a full length boot, and these pants do not even come close to go over top of the boot.

That said they are by far the most comfortable motorcycle jean I've had, and don't look like a motorcycling specific product. I've worn them at the office for an entire day after riding, no issues.

Can't comment on the crash worthiness, and hope not to have to. However they feel like a good balance, are comfortable, and great for a day of mixed activities on and off the bike. My favorite riding jeans.
