Metzeler Sportec M7RR Front Tires

The Metzeler Sportec M7 RR is engineered to empower riders with a sporty riding style who use their motorcycles in all conditions, weather and temperatures. The M7RR is derived from Metzeler's experience in Road Racing, including the Isle of Man TT and the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix and features completely new profiles, structure materials, compounds and tread pattern.

We all know roads are not always perfect like race tracks, we have to face unexpected wet patches, debris, temperature drops or uneven tarmac. For these uncontrollable variables, Metzeler has introduced a new concept of water drainage and contact feeling thanks to the Interact technology and high silica compounds.

Tread Pattern Design

The longitudinal grooves are interrupted by compound bridges to increase the thrust in acceleration, enhance the stability of tread compound and improve wear regularity. These bridges also keep the grove wide open when in contact with the tarmac, ensuring water evacuation. In the lateral grooves, depth decreases gradually towards shoulder area to increase compactness and lateral thrust when turning at maximum lean angle on dry tarmac; their width, on the other hand increases towards shoulder area to guarantee efficient water evacuation at higher lean angle.

Compound

For the Sportec M7RR, Metzeler has developed a compound capable of generating chemical and mechanical grip. The development target was to extend the sporty behavior from the ‘perfect or ideal conditions’ of dry warm temperature and regular asphalt to those sudden and unpredictable situations that we all actually encounter when riding on normal roads: wet spots, leaves, temperature drops, debris, holes, etc. Therefore Metzeler developed a totally new family of compounds with high to full Silica (SiO2).

The front tire is mono compound and features a 100% silica content.

Profile

The main function of the profile is to influence the handling behavior of the tire. The profile of SPORTEC M7 RR Tires are directly derived from those used in the Road Racing activity by Guy Martin and other road racers. This profile provides an immediate dive into a lean from the upright position and agile handling for quick direction change. The shoulder portion is flatter, providing a 5% larger footprint which provides better grip and trajectory precision when leaning. Sidewall height is also increased by 3mm, providing more torsional-flexibility that increases the tire traction in accelerations and out of the turns.

Features:

  • Sporty Handling: the combination of profiles derived from the Road Racing activities with high stiffness structures delivers an extremely agile handling for a sporty riding style on all roads.
  • Grip in all Conditions: 100% Silica compounds combined with a special tread pattern gives SPORTEC M7 RR the unique capability to keep the sporty riding style also in cold conditions, wet roads and greasy and grimy tarmac surfaces.
  • Extended Mileage: 20% more mileage compared to SPORTEC M5 Interact.

Love these tires!
I was a little skeptical about getting them after reading people had only gotten 2500 miles out of them. I've passed 3000 miles and you can't even tell! They remarkable tread life, and great grip! I've gotten lower on corners with these than I have any other tires to date.

So far so good!
Well I've had these tires on for about a hundred fifty miles so far and I'm pretty satisfied. The discount Revzilla was running was quite significant something like 30-40% off msrp. I took them up to ferrachi to get mounted while they performed my MV Agusta Brutales 7k mile tune up. I've yet to ride them in the rain but the large, deep, channeling is much more pronounced than other street/dot track type tires I've ran in the past few years so I'm betting they will be pretty impressive if I get caught in the wet. I was slightly worried the many channels could make things squirmy but that hasn't been the case at all. These tires scrubbed in pretty quick and seem to heat up relatively fast too "within a few miles of spirited riding." I haven't taken them to the limit yet as I'm still feeling them out but grip overall seems very good, when I did loose the rear in a slow 2nd gear corner most likely from dust or gravel they broke away and hooked back up predictably. The front tires profile is different than I'm used too. It's very rounded so transitioning from left to right takes a little more handlebar effort than some tires that "flop" but again that makes for a very predictable feel the entire time, and I think I prefer this feeling on the street. I might experiment with lowering the forks in the triple tree to speed things up a bit, but that might also make things too twitchy on a bike that isn't fitted with a steering dampener. Doing a few push ups would probably be more beneficial! One last interesting feature about the front tire is how the carcass wraps nearly around too the bead. The side wall is miniscule so while the rear I've gotten visibly near the edges of the contact patch the front is still miles away, and I'm certain if I was to come close I would be actively crashing lol, which again should provide a very linear feeling right up until hard parts start dragging and beyond!!!!

Excellent tire for a supersport street bike
This tire is ideal is you have supersport streetbike. I have run nothing but the Dunlop Q3 Sportmax on my 2015 ZX-10R for two years, but just switched to the M7RR and it is a dramatically better tire for street use. Much more compliant, which means better grip at street speeds and on crappy pavement. The Q3 and tires like it have a very stiff sidewall and beat you up on the street and freeways; the M7RR, not so much. The tire has tons of grip but feels comfortable and compliant on those long day rides. I've done a crap load of track days on the Q3s and would not choose the M7RR for track use if you are running "A" Group because you'll feel the squish, but for any kind of street pace, these are gonna give better grip everywhere with a more compliant ride. I'll be putting a set on my new 2017 Z900 Kawi as soon as I take delivery, too.

Solid Tires
I was able to scrub these tires in through Mt. Rainier, the day after rain, in 55-40 degree weather. Great tires. I bought them this fall and they warm up pretty slow. I can't attest to summer yet.

They do very well in the wet and pouring rain and over light gravel and debris however, however I the rear slipped on some foliage on a very damp road at lean. So, be careful cornering in the wet with debris on the ground.

For me, commuting in the PNW, these tires bridged the gap between a race tire and sport touring tire for all year riding.
This is a road racing tire. I like it and will possibly be my fall and winter tires again.

Great Tires
I bought this tire because my local shop didn't have the brand/model that I usually buy. They put the Metzeler Sportec M7 rear tire on and didn't have a matching front tire. These are pretty good tires, even on my sport touring bike (FJR1300A). I'll see how long they last, but so far I'm happy. Great tire so far.

Best Sportbike Tire
I have been through every "normal" sportbike tire and was always disappointed in the lifespan as I commute on a freeway and ride canyons on weekends. These tires are probably as close to a perfect tire as I have ever had, really really good canyon grip all the way to the edge of the tire.

Perfect balance and no weights needed!

The ONLY negative is that I only ride in dry weather and these tires have really great rain grooves (I just do not need em), I would much rather have a smoother profile of the same tire available. I did get forced into a major rainstorm amd the tires ride like they are on a dry road! I have heard they were great in the rain but it is true.

Buy em, they will not let you down!!

Awesome product and loads of grip and confidence!
I was riding on OEM Dunlops until I changed my front tire. After putting on the tire, within the first 50m I could feel that I made a good choice. The grip is very good, even at cold temperatures this tires performs more than you'd expect. Initiating a lean is more easier and more responsive. Overall front end confidence has improved a lot. I would say this tire provides much more than what I paid for!
