The Icon Airframe Pro Helmet has been built on this singular design focus which allows Icon to realize opportunities to decrease drag and weight by sculpting the traditional neckline to avoid jacket or suit interference. The dramatically reduced shell profile, comprised of aerospace-grade carbon fiber (FRP) features a track-recognized ECE certification. Precision assembly techniques further this dedication to mass reduction, allowing Icon to craft a helmet that is exceptionally light and peerlessly outfitted. Internally, the traditional three-piece liner has been upgraded to a five-piece liner, providing a greater amount of fitment combinations for each unique head shape. Crown, lateral, fore and aft padding components allow for a possibility of 27 fitment combinations in a single shell, double that of the Icon Airframe's competitors.

Welcome to our detail breakdown of the new ICON Airframe Pro Helmet available at Revzilla.com.
Six years ICON, you made me wait six years. We started Revzilla TV in the fall of 2009 and the original ICON Airframe was one of the first helmets we shot in the spring of 2010. Six years later I will tell you though, I'm excited because you took it to a whole other level. We've seen you come out with other helmets and when you came out with the Airmada I said, "They're not going to sell any other ICON Helmets because it's dynamite." The new Airframe Pro comes in over that $300 dollar mark. It's a complete overhaul to a six year old helmet the Airframe and they really knocked it out of the park.
Big upgrades. The first thing your going to know is the style changed. It's super aggressive, it's meant to be in the tuck, in the three quarter. Really, really clean aggressive line that really mirrors what I see a lot of from the European manufacturers. Is the great Hawksbill as well as the huge spoiler in the back. Again this is a sport bike helmet. The other thing they improved is going to be the fitment. This is the first time we're seeing a five piece modular comfort liner that you're able to tune, replace, there's a five piece set not a thirty two piece set.
A five piece set that you can be for around $40 bucks that allows you to completely fine tune the fit of this helmet. We're going to talk more about that and the other thing that they completely changed, I'm actually going to put them side by side so you can get a shot here. Is the vent scheme. The venting on the original Airframe was solid. It came in on a 45 degree angle, it vented the skull, it really upped the game from a ventilation standpoint. The new version of this helmet. The new Airframe Pro has now widened the vent schemes, you have five exhausts, but they got rid of this big super vent on top.
The problem with it is it was noisy as hell. So this helmet is now going to be aggressive. More aerodynamic in the tuck. It's going to have a better tunable fit scheme with a completely modular interior design and now it's going to be much more quiet. You're still looking at fiberglass. Lot of solids. This is the gloss, there is a matte black, which is that rubitone, there's a white. You're going to have the construct graphics. This is actually a construct where you can see the fiberglass weave throughout. This is actually a carbon fiber on this ghost carbon from the previous iteration. You have a version that feels like this and then they went full carbon fiber.
Which is getting close to that $600 dollar mark. But the beauty is the stock helmets on mediums coming in at three pounds six ounces. Dramatically lighter than the previous version. This guy was heavy and it was round and it was noisy. You're also going to see the fact that the carbon fiber version at six bones comes in around the three pound mark. So now you can go extreme light weight with full carbon fiber if you want. They really pulled out all the stops and they needed to because the Airmada which comes in around that $200 dollar mark, it's baby brother, it's poly-carb but is an extremely rock solid helmet that's track worthy, it fits phenomenal, it's super aggressive.
So this is the new big boy from ICON, the Airframe Pro. Let's dive into the nuance. So, DOT, ECE, World certified. We already talked about fit. We already talked a little bit about weight. Remember it's going to be lighter weight. It's got premium materials in it's composite design. This is not a poly-carb helmet. Let's dive a little further into fitment. So the fitment on the original version was round. In my opinion round is the least fit you should do in the American market. More people are going to be long and narrow. More people are intermediate. Round is the least. So they've recoiled back from that. All their new helmets have what I would call intermediate to long oval.
So for my head which is intermediate, little bit longer front or back, I'm just fine. If I'm a little bit longer and thinner, I'm going to be rock solid as well. It's not as extreme as something like an Arai Signet-Q. But it is going to be longer than your normal intermediate oval head shape. I'll also say this, the cheek pad, it really does mirror what we see from the Airmada. The Airframe's going to have a really snug fit configuration around the cheeks, really, really supportive. What I would consider to almost be a race fit. I'm going to call it that. Really nice touch. It's all encompassing and has that great feel, and again the interior guts are going to be that hydra-dry wicking liner that's really soft against the skin.
But the other thing, when we pull this helmet apart you're going to see these pieces. The five piece tunable liner. For a five piece set you're going to be able to get the top, the mohawk. You get the sides along with the crown of your head. You get the cheek pads. Everything's tunable in this helmet. So depending on your shape. Depending on the width. Depending on the thickness of where those pads are that are most comfortable for you. Tune that fit scheme. We haven't seen anybody do that.
We've seen the new high-end AGV Helmets have the movable wings that go from rounder to more narrow. We've seen Arai do tear-offs on the cheek pads, on the temples, to make it a little bit more neutral. We've never seen somebody go full bore into this spectrum. Nexx does some pads to adjusting's. But nobody's gone full comfort liner that's modular and replaceable with all the snaps in the right place to not create pressure points and they're also designed in a way that you're going to get increased air flow and again when we pull apart the guts I'm going to show you that.
Remember, use the size chart. Our goal is to keep you up-to-date. But more importantly I would love to hear your comments, your questions, your feedback on all of the key groundbreaking things that ICON has just done with this new Airframe Pro. Love to hear your opinions as well. Check out all the graphics that launched with this helmet. Now let's dive into the outside and work our way in. Let's dive into the nuance now that we've covered fit.
So let's talk about venting first. Coming from the front you can compare it to the old version. We have winglets along the jaw line. You're going to see our vent along the front side of this helmet. It's going to vent to the face as well as to the shield. It's a fog free coating here on this optics. That actually would for me be a little bit of a nitpick. I would love to see them have an optic shield, the new school shield from ICON. That was a pinlock ready version. If you're listening ICON that could be great downstream. Now if we move up to the helmet you actually gained venting or have the same amount. But they moved it, remember they made it more quiet. They got rid of that whole mechanism that lives on the temple.
It looks cool but it was loud. So you now have your chimney vents moved out towards the side that actually vent to the temple and you're going to see that on the inside of this helmet. All along the EPS, huge grooves that actually vent directly to the temple, directly to the forehead. It's actually covering the bulk of your head versus just down that center line that a lot of other helmets do. You also have your vent here in the middle. Again, great frontal ventilation. As we move it to the back and again you can see this sweeping profile. This helmet is designed to be in the tuck. No questions asked. In the three-quarter your fine. If your riding upright, hey that's on you, but it's not going to be the best aerodynamic profile for that.
This is an aggressive, aggressive lid. If we look at the rear wing. This is the ghosted version, you can see this actually has a translucent quality to it. Covering two vents up here along the top, you can see there's wing vents down here along the back and they actually have a horizontal, almost back fit. Remember high speed air moving over a sphere, it's going to create lift. That's what that spoiler is, it keeps down for us, you don't want lift and it's also going to create a vacuum which sucks more moist air across your head, pulls your sweat away, ventilates out the back side of the helmet.
You know it, you love it, it's called the Venturi effect and it's an aerodynamic principle. The other thing you're going to see as we work our way into the bottom, I might as well talk about it right now. Look at this cutaway along the back. The bottom of this helmet has an amazing neck roll that morphs into a wing and the backside has this huge cutaway. If you are in the tuck you're going to get better venting out the backside. You're also going to have this inner face with your jacket and if you're wearing a hump, which many people don't wear on the street, but you could take it to the track. Remember you're going to have this big cut away. It's going to allow better range of motion, better comfort, and as I rotate it look at the wing on this bad boy.
If you're wearing it unfaired motorcycle, this wing is going to help by eliminating disturbance. It's going to create some down force and stability at speed. It overall just looks bad-ass. We're seeing this theme in some more premium helmets. They've now adopted it. You can also see the cutaway here, it gives you a little bit of extra room if you have massive traps or if you have a collar bone that might get in the way. Especially if you have an off, you have a little bit better chance with that neck roll which is soft coming into contact with your collar bone, than the side of the helmet. Again, aggressive in it's thought process. Aggressive in it's design. But very, very functional.
It's also going to use the same ICON optic shield that's used on the Airmada. This is the new school addition. Notice the side pods. It's got great detents. You have a locking mechanism along the right side here. When I move it over here you're going to see that pin that keeps it in place and it's very simple to operate, it's a single finger usage. So again, no surprises there. But they are using their newest technology, which is what I want to see. Now if we move past the helmet guts or exterior let's move into the guts. I'm going to flip it on it's side and let's talk through some of the other items here and by the way if I was going to nitpick anything on the exterior of this helmet, I would say that the external chimney vents up along the side right here. They're a little bit tougher to find with a gloved hand.
I want to see a little bit more texture there or maybe a little bit more raise. So a little bit more positive action. But again, two position vents open half way closed. Just fine in my book if that's really what I'm picking at after a helmet gets a complete overhaul. Now if we move into the guts you're going to see this massive rear cutaway. Nobody's done this. Some folks have given you a raise, but this is massive. You notice there's a TPR that's going to tie in again with it's protection scheme and the EPS liner. Remember your looking at DOT, ECE, World standard certified, Japan, Australia, Europe, it covers all the bases.
Not going to be Snell though. I'm just going to call that out. Some people love Snell, not a Snell helmet. If we look at the guts, hydra-dry lining, five piece interior lining. Notice it is a removable chin curtain and they've anodized your double d-ring. Again, ICON's all about the details. I'm happy to see them do it. I'd also love to see when they start rolling out some of these graphics. I love it when they used to do the interiors that had full design to them. That was one of my things that I really dug, because again it fully finished the helmet. Be really interesting to see if they go that direction again. If we look at it, meant to be soft on your seat, against your skin. Again you have this microfiber, then you have your wicking hydra-dry which actually is antimicrobial as well.
So let's start to pull it apart. I'm going to show you what this five piece set interior liner that is replaceable looks like, and actually I have an extra small on the table so the medium shell would be a hair bigger. They're using different shell sizes per size just like the Airmada to cut down on the weight. So if I pull it out this is my cheek pad, notice the pre-curve to it, ergonomic, it's going to work, we talked about the materials. Also notice the way this cutaway works. One of the things I would love to see ICON do is you have this cutaway in the cheek pad, I'd love to see them give you a bigger cutaway actually in the shell or in the EPS behind the ear. So it's a little easier on a com device. A com device will fit, but it's not the deepest speaker pocket that I've seen.
But it will take a clamp or a sticky mount. We did test it out. Because at this stage of the game everybody's going bananas with third party com units. So if I bring out the other side here, cheek pads are what we expected. They didn't do an emergency cheek pad removal system. I'm not crying in my cookies. Again a nice touch they could add at a later date. You're coming in the mid three's, you're not spending five, okay I'm fine with it. Now if we bring it up here you're going to see the back side of the helmet. So there's my first piece. Right. So my first piece is going to be the mohawk, coming out on it's own.
Notice there's no limitations on the external side of this or on the lateral sides. There is no mesh. There's nothing breaking up the airflow to your head and notice how it connects to the front, there's no snaps to the forehead either. This is going to be my favorite point of connection, which is going to be plastic that integrates between the shell and the EPS liner. Along the back down here this is going to go behind your skull. You'll never feel these. These are underneath the occipital ridge on your head, you're all good. But notice hydra-dry liner, wicking antimicrobial soft. We talked about it. This is where this helmet gets different. Remember if you're looking at other helmets. You're going to see there's an entire comfort liner piece with this.
Where it's going to have sides and it's going to be integrated and it's going to be one piece. This is where they got all fancy. But they did keep it simple. These are your sides and they're developed in a way, they're two snaps that are away from pressure points, they vary in thicknesses based on that five piece set. Again not Uncle Rikko's thirty two piece set. If we look at it you're going to have the ability to swap these out. Buy that $40 dollar set. Fine tune the helmet. If I'm spending over $300 bucks, I want it to fit perfect and now they've given you the ability to do a little extra work and make it perfect through trial and error. Everybody's head is different. We are all different and our head shapes are all different.
Now if we look at the interior guts, all of the ventilation comes in. Notice what I talked about with the temple and the forehead. Up here where my finger is you're going to notice these are all cutaways. They integrate with the vents on the internally or on the front side and on the top, venting directly to the temple. Remember your temple's a pressure point because there's a lot of blood flow there. So if you can ventilate the temple you're cooling blood, it's going to be cooler blood circulating throughout your body. It actually accelerates your ability to stay cool in hot weather conditions. That is not made up, that is science. I'm science man today and I just told you why this is a big deal.
Now if you look at the inside guts here you have your basic channeling. I'll tell you I think that they could channel these maybe a little bit further. I think they could get a little deeper, maybe along the lines. I think Sharp is doing the best job at this right now. But that would be my call out if you're a die-hard on the channeling side of things. But if you look at it have full ventilation that's going to move through the helmet and the best part about this is you have such [inaudible 00:12:44] of extra materials and bulk within the comfort liner that is going to aide in ventilation as well.
So then you have your EPS, your dual density and keep in mind they made a lot of changes. Remember you're more quiet. You're going to be better tunable from a fit side of things. Very few nitpicks on my side of things. Speaker pockets, I thought the vents could be a little bit more usable with a gloved hand, but they do have a little ridge on them. Other than that though they completely threw the previous version, which was six years old, of the Airframe out the window and now you have an Airframe Pro. Which in my opinion is raising the bar in the three to four hundred dollar price point, for an aggressive sport bike helmet. That is going to be bad-ass on a solid, on a matte, on a construct level, at the carbon fiber level, taking it to the extreme. Buying for that light weight with the extreme materials.
You can tell I'm a fan. I tell you when I am. They've done a good job. They made me wait. But they came back strong.
