Helite Turtle Airbag Vest
Helite Turtle Airbag Vest
The Helite Turtle Airbag Vest offers the highest level of rider safety. The lightweight vest protects riders' spine and vital organs due to its revolutionary design, inorporating a back protector on top of the air bag that disperses impact forces across the vest instead of concentrated in one spot. With its mechanical trigger and lead system, there are no delicate sensors to fail or batteries to replace. Simply connect the lead to your vest and bike and go. When the rider is ejected from the motorcycle in the event of a accident, the trigger is pulled and the vest inflates, creating a rigid neck brace as well as firm support to the spine, back, chest, ribs and kidneys.
- Turtle CE approved airbag effective in 0.1 seconds
- Removable SAS-TEC back protector 1621-2 certified
- Textile 600D to effectively resist abrasion
- Retro-reflective tape for night use
- Interior 3D mesh for comfort
- Robust front clips are easy to open and close
- Adjustable side straps
- 1 CO2 cartridge and 1 motorcycle tether included
- SM-XL use a 60cc CO2 Cartridge
- LG-L and XL-L use a 100cc CO2 Cartridge
Sizing Recommendations: The vests are made to be long enough to sit on, but you do not want the rib protection so low that it is covering below the waist. The other fit to avoid is wearing the vest too small so it rides up high under the arms. The vest should have a loose fit and be long enough to cover the hip and pelvic areas in the event of an accident.
Note: The vest runs small. We recommend ordering 2 sizes larger.

Reviews & Questions
It is expensive. I suspect most buyers will be older riders who no longer feel invulnerable. Like the guy above me, I wanted some rib protection. It also offers a lot of spine and hip protection. It is not magic. It won't protect your head or legs or arms, but a lot of fatal motorcycle accidents are due to torso trauma.
Get a size that fits loosely. Most riders will want to wear this over a jacket, and it needs to be able to expand. I am 6'3", 205, wearing an XL, and it's just about right. It is plenty long, but I don't think it could really be too long, no matter how short you are.
I had it on when I dropped my super moto making a U turn on gravel on the side of a hill. It worked. Replacing the cartridge is easy, though you can't buy the replacements many places. Order spares if you buy one.
Some answers to common questions:
1. You won't set it off accidentally. It takes a lot of force to pull the locking ball out.
2. It is reusable and durable. You can wash it if you take the air tubes out.
3. It is geeky looking, especially in high viz. I don't think you will see many patch wearers with them.
4. It is a little warm in hot weather if you are wearing it over a mesh jacket.
5. It is kind of a pain to put it on and clip it in each time you ride. It's not that it takes that long, it is just one more thing to do. Then every time you get off the bike you have to unclip.
6. If it goes off, you don't have to deflate it. It has little holes that deflate it over a few minutes.
I also have a mesh jacket with the air feature from a japanese company. Helite is French, I prefer Helite. The fastening mechanism seems stronger on Helite.
At first I thought I would be a little self conscious because the vest isn't form fitting or flattering for a female but I really don't pay attention to what I'm wearing when I ride. Even if they come out with a women's version it's not meant to be form fitting so even that version would still be like a box. However, it's the best protection you can buy so that's okay with me. I get noticed because I'm highly visible and that's the part of the purpose of the vest.
My partner also rides and something he mentioned to me after purchase was how much more confident I am on the bike with the vest on. I'm not reckless but wearing the vest does give me some added confidence to do what I need to do on the bike to both have fun and be safe. I think it's in part the peace of mind but I also feel a bit more secure and strapped in to the bike when I'm wearing the vest and it's hooked up to the bike with the tether.
In addition, I noticed the design flaw others have mentioned that the velcro on the sides of the neck sometimes catches things(my hair included at times) but I just make sure to pay attention to that when putting the vest on and if it is that bad for someone I think the small velcro piece can be covered or lightly removed and not affect the vest.
Overall, I think the vest is worth the investment even though I haven't had to use it in an accident yet. I know a lot of people who think that riding is supposed to be more free and don't want to wear much safety gear but I think it's up to each rider to determine the risk they are willing to take when they ride. I accept the risks when I ride but I also want to give myself the best chance of coming home from my ride to my family and I think the vest and all of my other gear give me that chance.
The tether is too short for stand-up adventure riding, at least on my BMW Adventure, and there is no place else to mount it. That being said, I will disconnect the tether when I am going lower to moderate speeds, and standing up.
I was riding off-road today and came up on a curve that had a snow/gravel/mud mix. I did a high-side, the vest inflated, and I bounced around with no injuries. The neck brace worked perfectly. I didn't even realize I did a helmet slap, until I took off my helmet and looked at the damage. I have a bad back and neck due to previous injuries, but I walked away from this with only minor bruising from my jacket pads.
As for the Turtle in particular, it's expensive, but less than a funeral, and fairly well designed. The front is adjusted with long velcro straps, seems like not the best possible design esthetically, but certainly quite functional. Since the Turtle includes a monster back protector, I was able to remove the one from my jacket to streamline a bit.
Haven't actuated this one yet, but I have actuated others, and they work.
If safety is your thing, but love to ride, this is a great addition to your equipment!

So far it is comfortable, well made and worn every time I ride and I'm very happy that I spent the money on a potentially life saving device.

Was concerned about airflow and am comfortable in temps to upper 70s in a textile jacket - beyond that I need to have on a mesh jacket or get very warm.
Feels secure but not restrictive once it is adjusted. Actually forget that I am wearing another layer. Only time that I really notice the vest is performing slow speed maneuvers. I feel like I have to hop up and get the vest out from under me to move across the seat. (Maybe my rear is the issue?)
Good product that I recommend.
One thing, you have to remember to buckle that thing to the bike, I have to admit I rode off a couple of times and then remembered not doing so, and I pulled over to the side and did that. I wish there would make it in a way where the bike won't turn on unless you buckle up (like some cars do).
If you ride, get this, for the price you are saving your life.
