Reviews & Questions
I could not be happier with the clean design and the ease of install for these frame sliders. Graves did a nice job designing these sliders to match the look of the bike. Most people didn't even know they were frame sliders.
Unfortunately I had the opportunity to test these sliders out after a deer jumped out in front of me in the middle of a tight turn... at night. I laid the bike down and she slid about 15-20 feet before being stopped by a granite curb.
The frame slider held together well, but it honestly provided little protection for the rest of the bike after 1/4 - 1/2 inch of the frame slider was removed by the road. In the end I scraped the end of my handlebar, snapped off my turn signal, cracked my side mirror, snapped off my foot peg, removed plastic from the black 'scoop' on the side of the gas tank, destroyed the Yamaha emblem, and the stock exhaust took a decent beating. All in, the replacement parts ran me $250 - $300... excluding exhaust and turn signal because I decided to upgrade to the yoshimura exhaust and new led turn signals.
Now, as far as the mirror, handlebar, and turn signal goes... I am unsure if any frame slider can help keep this part of the bike off the road... If you know of anything that can do this, please share the details!
As far as the damage to the plastics / footpeg / exhaust.... I was really hoping the frame slider would provide more protection than it did. I firmly agree any frame slider is better than no frame slider... but $100+ for frame sliders that still resulted in $300 worth of damage in a low speed lay down seems a little steep to me.
If your bike is simply tipped over, I can see these frame sliders working well... but if your bike is going to travel on its shiny side for a short distance... I would continue shopping around.
And one thing that I found to be irritating.... you can purchase replacement pucks for almost every frame slider sold on Revzilla... except for these ones. I reached out to customer services at graves and after feeling like I was pulling teeth to get a replacement puck and assessing the damage to my bike... I've decided to replace these with woodcraft's frame sliders. Not as aesthetically pleasing as Grave's frame sliders... but they are cheaper, provide more protection for the bike, and replacement pucks can be easily purchased.
