Reviews & Questions
I'm a rather petite girl, so it was hard to find a jacket that doesn't make me look like a linebacker. This jacket is elegant and feminine, and flatters my curves and small waist! I think it looks better in person than in the picture.
For reference, I'm 5'6", size 28 pants, size 32C bra, and typically wear size 2-4 dress size (or I would if I actually wore dresses). I got a size 40 in this jacket, and it fits perfectly. A little tight in the torso, which is what you want, but extremely comfortable. It does not force your arms into riding position with stiff leather or pinch anywhere like other jackets. You can wear it off the bike and still look sexy and sophisticated.
I want to note that I found Rev'it to be too boxy, so if you're having that issue, Dainese and A-Stars are a much slimmer fit.
Because of the casual, vintage design, the sleeves are comfortable and have enough room for a hoodie underneath without cutting off blood circulation.
The only thing I worry about is the protection, which seems minimal. It's not a touring or track jacket by any means. The leather is very high quality and definitely will protect you from slide, but i'm not convinced that the soft armor will do much for impact (supposedly Pro Shape is great protection, but I'm dubious). Therefore the investment is for an attractive jacket that will undoubtedly last forever due to excellent Dainese quality. I should mention that the leather is supple and smells delicious.
I'm going to see if I can slip better armor into this jacket to make it safer, since the Pro Shape is removable. It also needs a back protector. That seems like an easy fix to my only qualm. I also got a reflective vest for better visibility at night. Bam, problems solved. Have your cake and eat it too.
I would recommend this jacket!
I've had so many complements on my jacket from strangers. The classic style is attractive and timeless. Looks great with riding pants that look like jeans (also a limited weather window option, but sometimes you just gotta look good)
In another review, there was some questioning about protection. I had a crash where I was thrown from the bike at about 40 MPH landing on my side-stomach. Elbows and forearms were perfectly protected. The leather itself has some scuffs but seems to have blended in over time to be hardly noticeable. My boyfriend's textile jacket was purchased at around the same time (3 years ago) and is starting to look aged while the high quality leather of the Mike Jacket is only getting better with wear.
Since we motorcycle camp quite a bit there have been times where the jacket has gotten wet or placed onto a muddy surface. I was fearful of ruining the leather for the first season until I saw how resilient it is. A good leather, if oiled every once in a while, will withstand quite a bit of abuse. While a friend was borrowing my gear, she stuck an admission sticker on the jacket much to my dismay!! Luckily it came off with no residue (just pealed off, using no solvents)! Whew! And for the most part mud, bird poop, and bug splat crumble off the surface of the leather after it has dried leaving the surface looking untouched.
This jacket does have a narrow temperature window. Paired with a Patagonia ultralight down jacket it is comfortable at 45+ degree temperatures. Putting a rain coat on top can help extend to lower temperatures but is really not the right jacket for the job. Hot weather is a little more tricky as the Mike Jacket has no ventilation. Anything above 75 gets to be uncomfortable. As a pillion, the only ventilation that is going to make a difference is the center zipper which is not ideal as it decreases the safety of the garment. As a rider, opening the wrist vents helps quite a bit but still not that much.
Overall this is a great jacket for around town and short trips. Anything over a week where weather is unpredictable, it's better to bring more versatile gear.
