Dainese Cyclone GTX D-Air Jacket

A new standard of protection for the sport touring motorcycle rider. Consider the bar raised. With the introduction of Dainese’s proprietary D-Air intelligent airbag system to the Dainese Cycle D-Air Gore-Tex Jacket, the serious motorcyclist can now achieve the same world class protection on the street as a Dainese-sponsored Moto GP rider enjoys on the track.

The Dainese D Air Cyclone Jacket uses the Intelligent Protection System which combines a wireless air bag system with highly evolved microprocessor technology to increase the level of protection available to motorcyclists. Internal sensors and a GPS signal distinguish the factors inherent in an accident and inflates the air bag, adding extra protection to the collarbone area. GPS allows rider telemetry via USB port, including lap times, maximum speed and trajectory plotting with instantaneous speed and acceleration.

In the event of a violent crash, D-air can trigger in less than 15 milliseconds. When the crash dynamics are less sudden, the sophisticated triggering algorithm assesses conditions and can decide upon a slightly longer triggering time. D-air works in synergy with Pro-Armor impact protectors, shielding the shoulders and collar bones in the rider's body. D-air reduces the risk of direct helmet impact on the collar bones, limits and reduces helmet movement during rolling. Protection is achieved without compromising the ergonomics and comfort of an aggressive-fit leather jacket.

Tests carried out in accordance with the current European standards for shoulder armor (EN 1621-1/97) show that D-air protection reduces the force transferred by over 85% compared with traditional composite body armor. D-air is the intelligent airbag-based protection for motorcyclists’ safety on the track.

Special Notes:

The Dainese D-Air Cyclone Jacket requires registration with Dainese. Due to the technical nature of the D-Air System, special care and maintenance is required. For example, the system must be overhauled every 5 years and air bag battery charged every 2 months. If the air bag is deployed, the jacket must be sent to Dainese for inspection and to reset the air bag. Owners of the jacket are responsible for any costs associated. Please read the User Manual in detail, and let RevZilla know if you have any additional questions.

Not ready for market
the d-air street vest is like an afterthought. the vest connects to the jacket by a few cheesy snap and loop connections, not even zipping in. These snap and loop connections randomly come undone.
The vest seems to have been hastily added to what would otherwise be an awesome jacket.

The next issue is that it takes THREE, yes 3, zippers to close the jacket. These wold only be a minor inconvenience if they were even a high quality zipper but these hang every time the jacket is opened or closed. Generally, just too much effort to only close or open a jacket.

Finally, the connector from the vest to the jacket. This cheap little piece of plastic hangs out at the base of your neck. Just trying the jacket on had the wire getting caught on my hand. I cannot imagine it is going to hold up. Just to add or remove the thermal liner requires getting a small screwdriver and disconnecting this connector. Thats too many concerns for what was meant to be an integrated system.

For $2000 this jacket should have been thought out better than it has been. As much as I have looked forward to this jacket for more than a year, there is no way to justify $2000 on something that is inconvenient to open and close, in which the vest (the critical part) does not stay properly attached, and the connections are questionable.

For now, stay away and wait for Gen 2

Agree with most of Taylor W comments. Bought this for the notional claims of protection. First issue was struggling with the zips. They felt cheap and were difficult to engage - not like a Barbour The air-vest is floppy and feels like it will fall out of its outer shell - only held in by a few studded loops. The connection to the power source at the neck is very fiddly and even the cover is difficult to snap into place. With the inner quilted liner, there are three zips to engage, which is a serious amount of palaver before getting on the bike. The outer jacket is slick, stylish and well designed, although I am doubtful about the air-vents which I suspect have too many layers to penetrate to be of much use? After spending £1800 on it, I will be seriously vexed if a Gen 2 version fixes all these issues:-(

Is this just a racing course jacket or an everyday riding jacket?
Jack G on May 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Racing jackets are leather, as they offer the best abrassion protection. This jacket is for every day riding.
