Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet

The Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet comes jam packed with the great features of the Qualifier and also includes the Transitions Adaptive Face Shield at an impressive price.

The RevZilla gear specialists have been rolling through miles and time zones faster than Marquez powers through laps at Sachsenring, which is to say pretty darn fast. Having just returned from Cologne, Germany and Intermot 2014, they have seen the best of what’s new, what’s fun, and what is worth reporting in the ever-expanding moto-verse. From bikes cranking out 300 hp, to the tip of the spear with regards to new helmets, apparel, and motorcycle accessories, they saw it, rocked it, and are back here at RevZilla HQ ready to keep you informed so that you can make the most out of your time on two wheels.

One of the hottest items from the International Motorcycle, Scooter, and E-Bike Fair (Intermot) was the Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet. When it was unveiled in Germany it was shown to have several incredibly cool features that were not applicable to previous iterations. Most notably, it was announced that this helmet would come with a free Transitions photochromatic face shield and the ability to house a Sena SMH-10 Bluetooth communication unit (with the proper adapter plate). This is far-out for a helmet of any ilk, much less one that will come at an entry-level price point. Both of these features will offer a massive value-add to an already popular helmet. What’s that you say, you don’t rock a Sena but prefer the Cardo Q3 instead? Fair enough, to each their own. Bell has you covered for that too, as they have announced that an adapter plate will be offered which will make the latter compatible with the DLX Helmet as well.

Great all around helmet on a budget
I have been looking for a helmet to upgrade to for a while-I previously had a knockoff of a Shoei design from a certain large US retailer that was acceptable for short passenger trips but the large shell size, lack of ECE/Snell protection, weight, and weird venting made it unacceptable for riding my own bike for longer periods of time.

I really liked the Shoei Qwest, but the price and lack of any solution for sunny weather (short of switching visors) was making me hesitant. When I saw this Bell helmet with the photochromatic lens, ECE rating, and overall seemingly quality product for such a reasonable price, I decided to pull the trigger.

Some sizing information-my previous helmet was an XS (53-54cm) and actually fit fairly well, but upon measuring my head a few times, I found that the S in the Bell Qualifier was closer to my actual measurement. I found that the S fits well-it was pretty snug when I first got it, but the cheek pads are starting to break in and become more comfortable after putting ~150 miles on the helmet so far. I have a fairly neutral head; my cheeks are a little rounder (since I am a woman), but I would call my head an intermediate oval. I found that it fits similarly to a S Shoei Qwest that I had the chance to try on in person.

This helmet is much lighter than my previous one, as well as much more comfortable. I found the pads/liner/interior materials to be of a pretty good quality; not quite as plush as the top of the line Shoei or Arai helmets, but for about half the price, I'm not convinced that a Shoei Qwest is twice as good. I also didn't have the chin flap/air dam (not sure if this is the proper term....) on my previous helmet and since this one has one, there are no weird venting issues. The three sets of vents allow a good amount of airflow, as well. I have ridden up to about 80F and sunny and when moving, the helmet was pretty cool. When the vents are closed, on chilly mornings, I have found it does a pretty good job keeping cold air out.

Visibility out of the helmet is good-no complaints. I also chose to get the white since most of my gear is black and I figured the extra visibility would help drivers to see me.

By far the most unique/best feature is the photochromatic lens. I wanted to wait to do this review until I could ride in more than just sunny weather to see how the visor changed. I can safely say that it works great! It is very subtle from inside the helmet-the first ride was very sunny and I realized my eyes weren't watering/I wasn't squinting, but it wasn't visibly "dark" so I lifted the helmet and was blinded, so obviously it was working quite well. I would call this a positive since it tints enough to block sunlight (it actually looks very dark in a mirror) but you still have optimal visibility. I also felt like it did well adjusting to changing lighting, like sudden cloudiness. On a partly cloudy day, the semi-tint is also very helpful without having to mess with internal visor controls or cram sunglasses in your helmet and all the annoyances that come with that.

The few negatives, I would say, is that the interior materials and the vent control plastic aren't as nice as something like a Shoei or an Arai, BUT for the price (which includes the photochromatic visor), I wouldn't really expect it. Also, I have not had the chance to use the communicator port yet (don't have any intercoms), so I can't speak to how that works.

Overall, this is a really great helmet with impressive features for the price...the photochromatic visor especially tends to make other riders jealous!

I was surprised!
OK, always being a lover of the Bell products for many years, the last 10 years I've been with high-end Shoei X11/X12 Helmets due to the quality of the Shoei products.
But I did not like the way my Sena attached to the X-11 or the 12, the ear speakers were weird and never fitted correctly. And wanted a matching set of helmets for me and my passenger. I found this Bell online for a killer price and with the installation kit this made my Bell into my new helmet(s), its only very very slightly noisier than my Shoei, very slightly.
This is a quality product and definitely worth a look!!!

I bought this for a passenger helmet
I have a rf1200 shoei with photochramtic lens, I bought this for a spare and extra helmet for riders. I used it a bit, I mounted the sena smh10 onto it too pretty simply. No regrets, the helmet is pretty nice. I can definitely feel a difference from build quality between my shoei and bell but that is two entirely different helmets.

For the price point I think this helmet takes the cake over my shoei. I paid almost 3x more my shoei with photochromatic shield and this came with one for around 220. That is an awesome feature and its really nice. It changes quite nicely in sun and I will never go without a changing lens ever again.

If you want a cheap helmet for a passenger or track, thats what my intention was for this and I am not let down. Great helmet for the price really is. Looks nice too.

Heres a picture of the shoei and bell beside eachother for comparison sake.

great features for the price
Helmet is a great choice for the price. The noise level seems a bit high at times but for the price you can't expect everything. My only complaint would be that it seems to lack air flow. On humid nights the face shield fogs up on me. Overall I would say it's a great helmet. If your buying it for the bluetooth compatibility, be sure to get the the unit that is made specifically for this helmet. No one seem to tell you that in the description on any website.

I like this helmet. I really do. The shield is great and the integrated com unit works really well.

A couple things:
-When the bracket for the Sena is installed, the cover for the port no longer fits. You would have thought they would have made it so you could still cover the hole if you don't have your com unit on. You know... make it so the clip for the port cover doesn't sit exactly where part of the com bracket does?

-This is the loudest helmet I have ever owned. Like... worse than my cheap dual sport helmet I use at slow speeds for offroad. The wind noise from the com port is horrible... they put absolutely zero effort into providing insulation from all of the openings it creates. I ride with ear protection anyway, but I couldn't even ride around town at 30 mph without destroying my ears. I have to really shove my ear plugs in and hope they don't loosen at all or suddenly the wind noise is unbearable. You would think I could run across town for 10 minutes to grab dinner, but nope. This helmet is louder than my cheaper HJC it replaced.

I like this helmet, but it will move to my back-up role and I will replace it. As a daily commuter riding on the freeway, this helmet just doesn't make the cut.

Great Helmet for the price and very comfortable
Bought this for my wife. I have my Qualifier and because it is comfortable, have transition lid I thought she will love it and she does!
Very comfortable, wind and noise level is average. The helmet is not that heavy and the shape of it make it very desirable and nice.

Too Loud W/ out Ear Plugs
Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet:

Pros: Love the transition lens, the Bluetooth option is really great, the materials used on the inside feel really nice and well made. Looks really nice and has some great feature for the price. Overall it's a decent bang for the buck because you get the transition lens.

CONS:The biggest downfall of this helmet is that it's loud, in fact ear plugs are not an option, but now mandatory for me with this helmet. Another con is that this helmet is very easy to scratch the coating. I set it in a shopping cart at the store and it got scratch. Again, decent bang for the buck, but make sure you either have a quite bike or you don't mind wearing ear plugs. One last con for me is the lack of options to close out the rear vents. This helmet seems to be geared more towards summer riding. I live around San Diego, so riding year around is very much an option for me. That said I would like a little more control over the air flow.

One last thing to note and many readers may know this already. Wearing ear plugs really cancels out the wind nose more then anything. With earplugs in I can hear my music perfectly and the sound of my bike. Also, most ear plugs fit perfect into this helmet even with the speakers installed.

Solid Helmet
I was looking for a good helmet for everday use, commuting, etc., that still looked good. I'm very happy with this helmet and the transition lenses that seem to work very well so far. The fit is snug and not uncomfortable at all after a bit of breaking in. I followed the sizing chart that fitted me between a Medium and Large, and the Medium fits nicely.

For the price this is an incredibly nice helmet for daily use or for a passenger... it works for everything.

Good fit, ventilates well
Fit of the helmet is good and it doesn't squish my face.
Pressure from the cheek pads is further back so it is more on the jaw line and doesn't give you kissy face cheeks.
The ventilation is very good and I have been able to remain fairly cool and sweat free on hot days.
Also keeps me warm in cold weather with the vents closed.
The transition shield works great and I don't have to wear sunglasses anymore, it becomes very clear for night driving.
Wind noise is fairly loud and is one of the issues with this helmet.
Another gripe is the shield indent for partially open directs the air right into your eyes, this is an obvious design flaw.
But for the price it's a good choice and if the indents were changed I think it would be the best helmet in its price range.

Nice helmet, great customer service, Thank you very much
Only thing that would be really nice for this helmet is a double lens. Here in the Great Northwest its cold and damp most of the year and helmets fog up a lot. The only real cure is a double lens.

Transitions visor and SMH-10 specialty mount, although they don't tell you that you need an adapter for the SMH-10 if you already own one and don't have the specific mounted version you need for this helmet, you don't need an entirely different SMH-10 but the adapter will run you an extra 50 bucks.

The combination of the Sena SMH-10, Bell Qualifier DLX, and the SM-H10 clamp kit was the best, most economical package I've found for a Bluetooth capable, good quality helmet rig. The O'neal Commander was an option as was the BILT Bluetooth, but the reviews on helmet quality concerned me, so for the $ I am opting for the combination of these components for which the reviews have all been positive.

Can you verify that the helmet is ECE certified? I only ask as Bell Helmet's own website only lists DOT for certification on this helmet. I intend to buy the helmet from you if it is ECE.

Does the DLX come with speakers and a microphone? I don't understand how the module after clipping onto the helmet will work without those. Maybe a video break down?

BEST ANSWER: The Sena kit for the SMH10 is made by Bell, comes in a Bell package for the DLX. You gotta take your time installing the kit, patience! Cut the little black foam piece that you took out of the helmet to do the install and squeeze it back in place THIS WILL CUT THE NOISE A LOT!!!!

BEST ANSWER: The transition face shield and it works great!
is it only the sena shm10 that works with this or will the shm10r fit in the cut out as well?
mason s on Sep 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I just recently purchased the SMH R10 to go with my Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet. I am not sure if the actual cut out on the helmet is designed for this product; however, I can say first hand that it does fit inside the cut out and is or is very close to complete flush after mounted. I was also able to route the wires in a fashion were the only wire seen is the wire for the battery. I would highly recommend these products together. In fact, I bought another set for a guest rider after purchasing mine.
How dark does the transition shield get?
Bobby L on Apr 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They're very good. Gets dark when is really sunny but not to a point where you can't see. and its very clear during the night. Only problem I had with the helmet is that it fogs up a bit but only when stopped. Overall the transition is top notch.
