Great Stick and Cornering for Huge Bikes
Some bikes are just not lean, very mean, tire destruction machines.

If you own one of these bikes -- BMW K1200LTs/RSs, Kawasaki Concours 14s, Honda ST1300s, and a host of others -- finding something with the traction you need in corners and in the wet and the strength needed to deal with 100+ HP and 1000 lbs of bike and rider is a real trial.

Avon's Storms are magic in the wet. Full stop. I've been out on the highway in conditions that had tractor trailers pulling off and have never felt so much as a wiggle from them.

Mileage is impressive -- I just pulled a rear tire off my K1200LT that had 12,000 miles on it.

Cornering behavior with these tires is impressive -- turn in is quick, and traction at full lean is what you would want.

Finally, the Storm IIs that this tire replaced were known for having such a flexible carcass that good riders could detect some straight line instability at higher speeds as the tire loaded/unloaded and flexed at speed. The Storm 3 has added additional reinforcement that has dramatically reduced this behavior.

For big heavy bikes, one assumes that making compromises on traction, handling and treadwear is required. The Storm 3s prove that assumption is wrong.

Avon Storm 3D X-M Make a Real Positive Difference
Just put these Avons on a ZX14r after going through the OEM tires wore out at 4,000 miles. the Avons have made an exceptional difference in ride quality and maneuverability. The bike feels 100lbs lighter in turns and the tread design is far superior in rain. You also get a better road feel out of them. I expect them to last a lot longer than the OEM tires. FYI... the bike is used for sport touring (long distance) not racing or ultra high speed riding.

Good for Muscle Cruiser Too
I had these on a Roadstar (Yamaha) Warrior, and am about to buy them again. They are much better than the battleax that came from the MFGR. They only lasted about 7,000 down to the cords on the rear, but I drag the brake and do burnouts from time to time so some of that is my own doing. I Imagine theyd work well for Vmax, Mean Streak's, etc for big cruisers that still want to scrape pegs now and then. If anyone can think of a better tire for this class let me know!

So-so lasting tires.
I ride a Triumph Speed triple and I purchased a set of these tires because I heard that they had a 15,000 mile warranty for the tires. I think I have a little bit over 9,000 miles on these tires, but they have held up great compared to some other claimed "long-lasting' tires. I'm looking at you, Michelin Pilot Road 4s, (after 8k it runs to the cords on the rear on this bike).

I purchased my last set in mid-October of 2016, and I am just now needing to purchase a new set of tires. So about 8 months of every single day use of commuting. Not too bad. The rear probably has ~1500 miles left, but the front is totally down to the wear lines. Which is kinda weird, because I usually get x2 the mileage from my front tire compared to the rear, but I guess it is not that big of a deal.

Enough of the good stuff, here is my only bad thing to say:
-Grip: The grip on these tires is complete shit if you are on anything besides a nice warm road. Any rain or cold, and you are going to HAVE to take it easy with these tires. This makes sense though because of how long they last. But with all due respect, I do have a Speed Triple which are very torquey. In the mountains, when it is nice and warm, the grip holds up excellent though. Good enough to ride very aggressively and drag knee if wanted.

Otherwise, these are the best tires hands down you can get for thread life on any tire eating bike and I've used every one of the "Sport-touring" tires.

I installed a AV66 rear tire on my 2014 Harley Davidson FXDL and the performance is awesome . Great stability and cornering . I highly recommend this tire to all of my fellow HOG owners . Far superior to the Michelin 31 Scorcher OEM tires in all areas . The price was great as well!!!

Best for my FJR
I've used Bridgestone, Metzler and now these Avons. All gave excellent grip. The Metzler wore out unexpectedly on a trip because it had no wear bars or channel through the center of the tire to warn me. The Bridgestone had an unusually short life. The Avons held their shape longest (didn't wear flat in the center) which I'm sure contributed to their longevity. Straight-up braking was strong and easy to control. Leaned-over cornering was sure-footed and inspired confidence. I'm now on my third set.

Overall good choice for a compromise between performance and tread life expectancy
I've only had these for a couple thousand miles so i can't give a true assessment of tread life but they seem to be wearing well...and it's a heavy sport touring (ZG1000) that gets ridden fairly aggressively. Not great cold but any tire is like that. Not bad/not stellar in the rain. Overall, if they keep wearing the way they are, I'll remain very happy, as these are touted as an extra-mileage (X-M) version of the Storm 3D. Thanks for the tires Revzilla! And safe riding to everyone :)

The sportier side of sport/touring
I put these on front and back of my Concours, replacing the oem Dunlops. What a surprise! The bike handles like it's 150 lb lighter. Leans into turns a lot quicker, and with less effort, but still stable and comfortable on the straights. Even at low speeds the bike is a lot more nimble, which took some getting used to.

I haven't had a chance to test wet traction or tread life (obviously), but everything I've read says they are great for both.

I previously had Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT's on my Versys1000 and found the longevity did not live up to the hype. Performance was otherwise fine. My past experiences with AVON Gripsters convinced me the brand has value and these tires got good reviews and came in at a significantly better price. With safety not being a concern I decided to try something different and maybe better.

Todd T on Feb 27, 2017
These are great tires so far. Used them in the fall and in these mild north east winter days. Was using Pirelli sport demons and these seem to have very comparable grip in the dry and better grip in the wet. The tire wear is excellent, especially as I've been commuting to work a lot. Used on a 2011 Triumph Thruxton.

I have a Concours 1000, and this tire gets good reviews from most others who have tried it on the bike. I'm looking for the right combination of performance, durability, and wet weather grip...hoping this is it.

79V Load Index for the "BIG" BMW K1200LT (830 lbs.) And; I have run this tire on my 2001 Kaw Concourse. It sticks and wears well. Over-all, a smooth rolling tire. And it's a radial. Want the radial!

I've used Storm 2 tires in the past and liked them a lot. Your Avon over video was good, but I would have liked more explanation of what the 3D and X-M designations meant for those tires. No biggie, your site is always very helpful.

This is a good tire for the Kawasaki Concours ZG1000 rear tire. It is the same price as the Bridgestone Exedra Max 150/80R16 but the Avon has a higher speed rating (W or 170mph) verses the Bridgestone (V or 150mph). Both are radial tires and the exact same size. IN addition, the Avon is listed as a rear tire whereas the Bridgestone is actually listed as a front tire (I would think this would affect the design).
Vincent H on Jan 3, 2015
Already a good tire, the X-M just made it better with the Extra-Mileage. Sweet Revzilla price too. Good on wet blacktop but wet concrete can be a bit slippy (most bike tires have this issue). As for dry roads, these tires feel smooth and sure of themselves. Not super sticky but they handle exceptionally well, even on a ~600-lbs Concours +my 150lbs. About 1500-2000 miles and the tread still looks brand new. If they continue this way, I'll be buying these from now on!

Will this fit my Street Twin? I was told to look for 100/90 R18 56 V, but you have this model which is 100/90 ZR18 56 W, is it the same?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: According to various websites this is the speed rating of the tire. This tire is rated better than what is required by Triumph.
Does it state on the side wall that these tires will accept a tube?
Kevin L on Dec 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: To the best of my knowledge they are tubeles. My bike is in winter storage, and I only have memory to go on
Would this be a good choice for a sport/touring tire for a lighter bike? I'm looking for a good compromise of grip/tire life for my FZ-09. Thanks
A S on Dec 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Generally, the tire was designed for heavier high speed sport touring. I would go to the Avon Tyre site (for USA) and enter your motorcycle in their search fields and see what the company recommends.
