Akrapovic Racing Exhaust System Yamaha FZ-09 / FJ-09 / XSR900

Akrapovic is proud to introduce a stunning Racing Line exhaust for the Yamaha FZ-09. The FZ-09 is a bike with a strong focus on riding emotion and represents a new direction in sport-bike evolution. A bike designed to give homage to the darker and unconventional side of Japanese society can now be made even more mean, moody and exciting with the addition of Akrapovic's offering.

The Akrapovic Racing Line has been designed specifically for demanding riders and represents an ideal balance between price and performance. The exhaust systems are dramatically lighter compared to stock exhaust systems and feature exceptional production quality and increased engine performance combined with pure racing sound output. The headers and mid-pipes are constructed of high-quality stainless steel conical tubes with precision handcrafting. A special process known as hydroforming is used in the manufacturing of the exhaust pipes. This process injects pressurized water into each tube to form the ideal shape for optimum exhaust flow without causing creases or compromising the strength of the steel.

Akrapovic Exhaust’s unique design enables them to obtain the maximum output for each specific model of motorcycle, while significantly reducing overall weight. It’s not just about peak power - Akrapovic exhaust systems deliver increased performance throughout the entire RPM range. Increased power and torque result in a much smoother ride. All Akrapovic exhaust system measurements are formulated on in-house computer-controlled flow benches.

The Racing Line is identical to Akrapovic’s top range Evolution Line exhaust systems, with the major difference being the material that is used for the headers and mid-pipes. The headers and mid-pipes of the Evolution Line are constructed exclusively of titanium while the Racing Line uses stainless steel.

  • High quality stainless steel headers and mid-pipes
  • No fuel remapping required, but for optimal performance RevZilla recommends use of a fuel controller
  • A combination of beautiful machine and hand welds
  • CNC machined muffler inlet cap
  • Optimized to maximize lean angle
  • All carbon fiber parts are produced in-house
  • Air-tight quality controlled production means your exhaust will be perfect
  • High-quality, silicon-shielded stainless steel exhaust springs

Tracer 900 GT: Subtle, but mean
This review is of the Akro racing exhaust on my 2019 Tracer 900 GT.

Unsurprisingly for an Akro exhaust, it looks clean and mean, and it is clearly manufactured with high quality parts and processes. I have not remapped the fuel or installed a fuel controller, and it is performing well, as advertised.

But if you're like me, it's about the sound, and this exhaust nails it for me. I'm a city rider, so I want to be heard, but I don't want an obnoxiously loud bike. As far as after-market exhausts go, this is a quiet exhaust, but it sounds GOOD. It's the quiet, deep growl of a performance system. When you do get on the throttle, it gets loud, but still not obnoxiously so. The best way I can describe it is as a subtle growl. People's heads turn when they hear this exhaust, and I think they're often expecting to see a Ferrari or Lambo. It has that same tune.

So in short, if you want a loud exhaust, this isn't it (at least with the DB killer in). However, if you want a slightly louder exhaust than stock, that sounds incredible at all revs, this is it. The only reason this isn't five stars is because I think the price is about $200 too high for the product, but it's Akro, so you're getting a product to last the lifetime of the bike.

I recommend!

Gorgeous- db killer is impossible to remove
Full install and review by Sean Havok on YouTube. Amazing fit and finish, the DB killer is welded in!!! It’s a HUGE pain to remove. Similar sound with the dB killer installed.. sounds AMAZING without it installed.

The DB killer on this bike is welded in place. If you intend to remove it, I'm sure there's another model that offers an easier removal. With this model, you'll have to follow the other guy's instructions and drill into the indent and put some SERIOUS work into getting the damn thing out. And I'll warn you that the exhaust is insaneeeely loud after the process is done. I mean, I ride a 2017 FJ 09 and it sounds like I belong at a Moto GP event (thanks FZ 09 engine).

If I were you, I'd get the other model because when it comes time to go touring, I'm just gonna put the old exhaust back on since it's THAT loud.

A great sounding pain in the ass
Firstly, this exhaust in it's factory state has a great tone but is MAYBE slightly louder than the stock exhaust on an xsr900.

I bought this exhaust not knowing that the silencer is basically not meant to be taken out by mere mortals. If you want a loud pipe and aren't willing to put some blood into your new motorcycle look elsewhere.

Pros: This exhaust looks freaking gorgeous! It has an amazing tone even though it's very soft spoken. It's short, so this means you can remove the dumb factory safety bracket the prevents you from getting on the ball of your right foot!

Cons: The only con I can think of is how ridiculous it is to get the silencer out.

~~Silencer Removal~~
Firstly NOTHING in the installation instructions say how to remove it. Also, the factory diagram doesn't show it as a separate piece, this should have been my first clue.

I got lucky and found a picture album of someone removing the silencer

To expand on that album I'll list what I did (also in case those pictures get removed some day).

1) Have the muffler off the bike
2) Remove the 3 allen keys that attach the carbon fiber tip to the exhaust and pull off the carbon fiber tip
3) Locate the spot weld that hold the silencer into the exhaust tip (should be somewhere to the top left of the tip
4) Use a punch to make a divet in the center of the spot weld and use a 1/4 (about 6mm) drill bit to drill out the spot weld. Use cutting oil!
5) Prepare to royally screw up your silencer
6) *I'll list what I did although it's pretty janky* Attach the strongest pair of vice grips you have towards the center of the silencer's tips REALLY clamp them down. Wedge a strong screw driver in the backend of the jaws of the vice grips.
7) Grab a friend and have them hold the exhaust next to a corner of a wall. Place the handle of the screw driver on the corner of the wall (with the tip of the screw driver in the vicegrips still) and begin hammering the screw driver shaft like you are building the transcontinental railroad (I used a 2lb mini-sledge)
8) Check the progress of your railroading skills by looking into the spot weld that you drilled out. Once you are physically drained contemplate life for a minute then continue hammering.
9) What??? It's actually coming out?!? Holy crap!!!
10) Revel in the glory as the silencer finally comes out of the muffler.
11) Install the muffler on the bike (be glad this parts easy)
12) Keep anything flammable away from your exhaust as it can now spit 8" flames just be revving it. (You'll probably do this for awhile or until you loose your hearing) MWAP!
13) Oh yeah, you just voided your warranty and made enemies out of your neighbors. But your bike spits freaking flames man!!!
