WHAT IS A MOTORCYCLE SUBMODEL?

You probably know your motorcycle’s model--for example, you may own a CBR1000RR, FZ-09, or ZX-10R. However, motorcycle models often include additional numbers to identify unique characteristics, such as color or option package. Your CBR1000RR may in fact be a CBR1000RR 2A, in which the “2A” indicates the “Victory Red” color scheme. This is the motorcycle’s submodel.

Find and Decode Your VIN
Your motorcycle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) contains everything you need to know about your specific bike, from where and when it was manufactured to its color and trim level.

Finding Your VIN
Your VIN can be found on your vehicle title, registration and proof of insurance. If you don’t have those handy, you can find your VIN on the motorcycle itself. VINs are typically stamped directly into the metal of the motorcycle’s frame, but some models also include a VIN plate. Look for the VIN on your motorcycle’s steering neck, located behind the headlight or the front number plate. All vehicles are required to have a VIN.
