It may sound like a long journey from taking the Motorcycle Safety Foundation DirtBike Course as a second-grader who has never ridden a motorcycle to qualifying for the AMA Amateur National Championships at the Loretta Lynn Ranch as one of the top 42 riders in the country in your class. That's because it is. But Miles Engelmann made that improbable journey.
From kids just starting on minibikes to old pros coming back in their retirement years, just about everyone at Loretta Lynn's comes from a racing family. Engelmann is different. His parents weren't riders or racers. They just thought the DirtBike School would be a fun birthday present. They had no idea where it would lead.
But the DirtBike School is designed to make it easy to get started and to get started right. Bikes and gear are provided, so anyone can learn the basics in a safe environment with expert guidance. And that's what Engelmann did. Then he came back and took the class over and over because it was his way to keep riding. And that enthusiasm eventually led him to competing at the top amateur levels.
Of course most newbies who take the DirtBike School will never go on to compete at the national level in motocross or even want to try. But like Miles, they may find life looks a lot different after discovering the joys of riding. Check out the kid's story in the video.
