Video: 2016 Honda Africa Twin testing

May 14, 2015

In the last 48 hours, I've had 49 conversations about the upcoming 2016 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin.

Will it be good? Will it be bad? Will they hit the mark like they did with the 300s? Or will it be a miss for most people like the NM4?

To be honest, despite having several dollar bills tied up in bets about its success, I have no idea if it will be any good. However, after a lovely little tipster sent me this video, I like the odds a lot more.

Though poor quality, there's a lot to get excited about in this video.

The first thing I noticed was the sound. This doesn't sound like any Honda I've heard, and it makes a grunt truly worthy of seeing some dirt (or at least making you feel like you're Chris Birch).

Second was those beautiful tires. The photos Honda released showed much less aggressive rubber that didn't even hint at being off-road capable. I don't think the Africa Twin will come from the factory wearing TKC80s, but it's encouraging that Honda thinks the bike is capable enough in the dirt to test it with them.

Finally, that little pass by at the end shows a rather svelte machine, which may actually be fun off road compared to massive monsters like the BMW R 1200 GS.

The more I hear and read about this thing, the less the DCT makes me nervous and the more I think the Africa Twin might be really, really awesome. The big question left is just how much will they charge?
