Vespa and Aprilia celebrate anniversaries with special-edition models

Apr 16, 2024

Rinaldo Piaggio founded Piaggio & C as a locomotive manufacturer in 1884. Throughout the two World Wars, the company produced aircraft engines, trucks, and trams, but the post-war years birthed its most famous vehicle: the Vespa.

With 2024 marking Piaggio’s 140th anniversary, Vespa celebrates the occasion with the aptly named Vespa 140th of Piaggio scooter.

The limited-run variant leverages Vespa’s range-topping GTV model as its base. That means it’s packing Vespa’s “highest performance engine,” a four-valve, 278 cc single pumping out a claimed 23.8 horsepower. The 140th also comes standard with ABS, traction control, keyless ignition, and LED lighting.

Thanks to the blue and light blue graphics on white paint, two-tone saddle, and commemorative 140-years logo, onlookers can’t miss that it’s a special edition. Vespa will produce just 140 examples of the model and customers can only purchase a unit between April 18 and 21, the same days as the Vespa World Days 2024 rally.

The company doesn't list an MSRP, but Vespisti can expect the ultra-limited scoot to cost more than the standard GTV’s $8,499 price tag. Also, while the list of countries where you can order a 140th ranges from Armenia to Seychelles, the list does not include the United States, so don't expect your local Vespa dealer to be able to help you.

If you can't get the Vespa, there is another, more high performance option, because Vespa isn’t the only Piaggio brand recognizing a landmark anniversary. Fifteen years ago, Max Biaggi piloted the Aprilia RSV4 to its maiden victory in the World Superbike Championship.

The Italian marque didn’t win the WSBK title that season, but it went on to capture seven championships in the following years. That includes rider championships with Biaggi in 2010 and 2012 and Sylvain Guintoli in 2014. It also won four manufacturer crowns in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The 2024 Aprilia RSV4 Factory and Tuono V4 Factory SE-09 SBK honor that racing heritage with a livery resembling the 2009 race machine. Both special editions remain mechanically identical to their base counterparts, but the SE-09 SBKs come standard with a carbon fiber front fender and carbon fiber cooling ducts mounted to the front brake calipers.

Aprilia hasn't said how limited the limited-edition RSV4 and Tuono will be, but each will bear a serialized badge on its gas tank. And since you get the extra carbon fiber bits and they only cost a few hundred dollars more than the regular Factory units, if you like the look and you're in the market for one of these bikes, the special-edition models might be worth grabbing.

Piaggio unveiled the Aprilias at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, Texas this weekend and Maverick Viñales did his part to celebrate by winning both the Saturday sprint race and Sunday's MotoGP race on his Aprilia RS-GP24. It was a good weekend to be Aprilia.
