Triumph teases a Speed Triple RR

Aug 17, 2021

From the beginning, when Triumph was revived under John Bloor's ownership in the 1990s, the Daytona was the faired sport bike and the Speed Triple was the naked bike in the streetfighter style gaining popularity back then. But now it could be that the ultimate Speed Triple isn't totally naked.

Here's the only "clear" shot of the headlight, shown pointing up here with a little fairing to the right. This could be a handsome motorcycle. Triumph photo.

Triumph just released a teaser video for a concept “Speed Triple RR design prototype” with a round headlight (something the Speedy hasn't had for many years) and at least a half fairing. The prototype could have a full fairing, but it's hard to say for sure since 72 percent of the teaser image is inky darkness.

The concept is billed as “the perfect blend of pure elegance, exhilaration and attitude.” Presumably this bike would use a version of the Speed Triple RS engine in a zippy state of tune.

Functionally, the Speed Triple RR could be the big-bore sport bike Triumph has been missing since the liter-class Daytona was discontinued. Over the years, Triumph put the Daytona name on everything from an inline-four Daytona 1200 in 1993 to the four-cylinder Daytona 650 a decade later. But the Daytona line is best known for the superb 675 triple model that debuted in 2006 and remained in production for a decade before Triumph pulled the plug, citing a lack of interest in faired motorcycles. Today, the only fully faired motorcycle in Triumph’s entire lineup is the Daytona Moto 2 Limited Edition, starting at $17,500.

So is the Daytona badge absent because this will not be a fully faired sport bike or is it because Triumph wants to reserve that name for the middleweights it is now more closely associated with? The teaser video doesn't give us a lot to go on.

We can see that the RR has a sporty riding position for a Speed Triple, but the hand grips are still above the triple clamp, which suggests it's more Speed Triple than Daytona. This could be another case of Triumph wanting to push a popular model to the next level, in this case their bonkers Speed Triple RS, perhaps as a limited edition.

I pushed Triumph's photo around in Lightroom to get a better look, and revealed a very familiar tail profile. I swear these teaser images get darker every year. Triumph photo.

So will this see production? Words like “concept” and “design prototype” don’t usually inspire confidence, but at the bottom of the page, Triumph invites visitors to “sign up to be among the first to see this stunning new motorcycle when all is revealed in September.” I suspect we'll see this as a '22 machine. Look for more information on the Speed Triple RR in the coming weeks.
