MotoGP celebrates 75 years of Grand Prix racing with retro liveries

Aug 02, 2024

The first Grand Prix motorcycle race was held at the Isle of Man on June 17, 1949. From air-cooled singles to two-stroke 500s to four-stroke liter bikes, from bubble fairings to aero winglets, the World Championship series has come a long way in the past 75 years.

To commemorate the Grand Prix’s diamond jubilee, MotoGP organizers asked all 11 race teams to create a special livery for the British GP. Yesterday, those retro paint schemes broke cover at England’s Silverstone Circuit.

Yamaha

Yamaha takes its YZR-M1 back to the 1970s. The design honors the Iwata factory’s first premier class title captured by Giacomo Agostini in 1975. MotoGP photo.

Honda

Freddie Spencer won the 500 cc Grand Prix championship aboard Honda machinery in 1983 and 1985. Big Red’s British GP livery pays homage to those glory days. MotoGP photo.

The Idemitsu Honda team keeps it simple with graphics inspired by the Japanese flag, while LCR Honda’s classic Castrol livery is a tribute to Mike Hailwood. MotoGP photo.

Aprilia

Aprilia’s La Perla Nera (Black Pearl) livery calls back to Max Biaggi’s 250 cc titles in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Sometimes (OK, most times), black is best. MotoGP photo.

Trackhouse Racing, the only U.S. team on the grid, salutes American icons of the sport, including Freddie Spencer, Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, and Nicky Hayden. MotoGP photo.

KTM

The white and blue paint scheme favored by Red Bull KTM is an ode to Team Orange’s 1989 LC4 race machine. MotoGP photo.

Aside from the throwback Motul decal, GASGAS doesn’t rely on nostalgia. It’s a mighty clean design, nonetheless. MotoGP photo.

Ducati

Ducati entered MotoGP’s Premier Class in 2003. The brand’s British GP livery is an ode to that debut. Notice the Marlboro branding didn’t come along with it. MotoGP photo.

Prima Pramac’s black and red wrap references Garelli GP bikes ridden by legendary Spanish racer Ángel Nieto. MotoGP photo.

Reminiscent of Valentino Rossi’s 2018 helmet, the VR46 design features the Soleluna logo and The Doctor's racing number on a navy blue background. MotoGP photo.

Fausto Gresini won two 125 cc Grand Prix titles with Garellli 1985 and 1987. The Gresini Racing Team honors its late owner's legacy with a livery mimicking those bygone Garellis. MotoGP photo.
