Harley-Davidson just pulled the wraps off its lineup of new models as the Bar and Shield marks its 120th year. Most of the new-for-2023 motorcycles are anniversary editions of existing bikes, but there are a few new faces, like the Nightster Special, the Road Glide 3, and the return of the Breakout.
H-D also announced plans for a 120th anniversary event in Milwaukee. Jochen Zeitz, president, chairman, and CEO of Harley-Davidson, hinted at more new motorcycles to roll out in 2023, and I think smart money would bet on seeing additional launches during the Milwaukee festival.
“Since 1903, Harley-Davidson has pioneered motorcycle design, technology, and performance, and today marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of Harley-Davidson’s 120th Anniversary,” said Zeitz. “We’re excited to share the first release of 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycles, with more to come later in the year.”
Can we get that Bronx/streetfighter, please? Anyway, here’s an overview of the new Harleys.
2023 CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model and six additional limited-edition motorcycles
The headliner of the 120th anniversary range is the “very limited-edition, super-premium CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model” in Heirloom Red with hand-laid gold accents. How super-premium? Try $51,999 for the most opulent machine in Harley-Davidson’s current lineup.
A 120th celebration treatment is also available for the Ultra Limited, Tri Glide Ultra, Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special, Fat Boy 114, and Heritage Classic 114 motorcycles. All seven anniversary models get matching gold/red/black seats and special cosmetic parts around the engine and transmission. Of course, these are all limited-edition releases, with around 1,500 serialized examples of each model available. The exception is the Fat Boy 114 Anniversary — Harley is building 3,000 of them.
2023 Breakout ($20,999 base)
A decade after the original Breakout appeared, a new generation rejoins Harley’s ranks for 2023 with Milwaukee-Eight 117 power. The Breakout was discontinued in 2021, along with the short-lived FXDR. Harley made a few key changes to the Breakout before reintroducing it to increase its appeal. First is the gas tank, which now holds five gallons instead of the previous model’s 3.5-gallon capacity. There’s more chrome, more cubic inches of displacement, and more flash from the new “roulette” cast wheels. Harley has also tweaked the handlebar setup, intake, and other details to catch the attention of the “factory custom” muscle crowd.
2023 Road Glide 3 ($32,999)
There's big news on the trike front with the introduction of the Road Glide 3 ($32,999 base), which is basically a triked Road Glide, frame-mounted fairing and all. It’s powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114 and features most of the same hardware you’d find on a regular Road Glide, like an infotainment system, speakers, LED headlights, and electronic safety aids. Instead of hard bags, the Road Glide 3 gets two cubic feet (56.6 liters) of waterproof storage in the trunk.
2023 Nightster Special ($14,999 base)
The Nightster picks up a sister model with the new Nightster Special, which adds passenger accommodations, a slick new wheel design, and standard cruise control that was absent when we first saw the standard Nightster last year. Another change is the addition of five-inch handlebar risers that move the rider’s hands up. This also allows the dash to move between the handlebar and the tank for a sleeker look. The Special is powered by the same Revolution Max 975T V-twin that the Common Tread team has tested and enjoyed. This seems to be a slightly more practical and premium Nightster for the occasional two-up rider.
