2022 Triumph Speed Triple RR 1200 first look

Sep 14, 2021

The Speed Triple 1200 RS was introduced in early 2021 as the ultimate evolution of the Speed Triple platform. Now, it shares that status with the new Speed Triple 1200 RR, a stylish sister model that combines the brute strength of the RS with modernized cafe racer style.

Triumph says the RR was co-developed with the RS, but they were launched separately because of their unique identities within the line.

Triumph claims the RS has been hugely successful for them, and with the RR, they’re branching out from the core product to deliver a bike unlike any Speed Triple ever built in their factory. Triumph did mention the MV Agusta Superveloce as competition for this model, as it’s an obvious comparison that also comes in red… then reminded us that the RR is a far more potent ride. Let’s meet the new machine.

From RS to RR

The obvious differences between the 1200 RR and 1200 RS are ergonomic and aesthetic, but the suspension’s been altered, too. Let’s get into the details that set the RR apart. (If you aren’t already up to speed on the Speed Triple 1200 RS, head over to Jen’s first ride review for a good idea of what the new bike will be like to ride.)

The RR is heavily based on the RS, sharing its engine (1,160 cc, 177 horsepower, 92 foot-pounds of torque), tune, frame, wheels, exhaust, and most other components with Triumph’s meanest streetfighter. Tech rolled over from the RS includes a five-inch TFT dash, cornering ABS/traction control, wheelie control, multiple ride modes, keyless security, and an up/down quickshifter.

The most striking change with this model was ditching the angry RS “eyes” for a round LED headlight wrapped in a sleek half fairing. The tank paint also differs from the RS to accentuate the new, “nose-down” lines. Look a little closer, and you’ll spot carbon fiber accents from tip to tail. The RR also gets Pirelli’s new Diablo Supercorsa SP V3s, which are practically street-legal slicks. Accessories include billet caps/accents, TPMS, heated grips, an alarm, and a tracker.

The RR’s new direction means a lower, more aggressive rider triangle for the chin-on-tank crowd. Triumph pulled the footpegs back and up a bit, then went to clipon handlebars that are 5.3 inches lower and two inches forward from the one-piece ‘bar on the RS.

The other major update for the RR is new hotness from Öhlins: the Smart EC 2.0 electronic suspension, adjustable on the fly. This is a step up from the Öhlins NIX30 fork and TTX36 shock on the RS.

Triumph’s market research suggests that the Speed Triple RR is what the brand’s fans have wanted for a long time: modern running gear, classic-inspired styling, and colors other than gray and black. It’s almost certain to become an instant classic, but that comes at a price.

The base Speed Triple 1200 RR will sell for $20,950 in the United States. If you want Hopper Red, that’s $325 more. (For reference, the RS starts at $18,500.)

The RR’s looks, power, and tech should be a hit with Triumph’s customers, but with that price tag, the bike faces serious competition. The big question will be those ergos that abandon the beloved Speed Triple recipe.
