Shoei GT Air Helmet

Enjoying the ride is what motorcycling is all about and having a helmet that is comfortable and safe just facilitates that joy. The Shoei GT-Air has been designed from the ground up to be the ultimate all-rounder. With a fully adjustable ventilation system, drop-down internal sun visor, fog-free Pinlock CNS-1 face shield and Shoei’s legendary comfort and quality, the GT-Air has all of the features you need to keep your focus on the road instead of on the discomforts a lesser helmet can cause.

The GT-Air was developed using wind-tunnel testing at Shoei’s state-of-the-art facility in Japan which led to an aerodynamically-tuned tri-composite shell that mitigates buffeting, as well as wind and road noise. The plush liner is comfortable, quiet and removable when you need to wash it. Light, safe and comfortable, the Shoei GT-Air Helmet meets and exceeds the needs of contemporary riders, allowing them to enjoy what they love most: the ride.

Aerodynamic Shell Design:

  • Aerodynamic properties maximized through extensive wind tunnel testing and professional riders’ feedback
  • Multi-piece EPS liner enhances impact absorption and ventilation
  • Three shell and four EPS liner sizes provide increased fit options that help comfortably fit most head sizes
  • Molded air spoiler reduces drag and lift as well as diminishes pressure on the rider’s neck while riding at speed

Sun Shield Visor System:

  • Built-in QSV-1 sun shield gives riders instant relief from sun glare in one quick motion
  • Visor meets ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard for non-prescription eyeglasses
  • Large and easy to reach switch activates the 3D injection-molded inner sun shield
  • Distortion-free shield blocks 99% of harmful UV rays
  • Forehead area of the outer shell is raised slightly to accommodate the internal sun shield, allowing the integrity of the GT-Air’s inner EPS liner to remain intact

Ventilation System:

  • Upper air intake vent positioned to maximize air volume into the helmet interior
  • Large upper intake vent positioned to maximize performance behind wind screens
  • Easy to operate large lower intake vent
  • Lower air intake/defroster vent reduces shield fogging and increases ventilation
  • Rear/neck vents allow for effective air exhaust
  • Breath guard and chin curtain included

Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM):

  • High performance fiber materials combined with elastic organic fibers to create a shell structure that is ultra-lightweight, rigid and resilient

Interior System:

  • 3-D Max-Dry center pad and multi-layered, polyurethane foam cheek pads
  • Chin curtain prevents wind entry and reduces noise
  • Cheek pads are replaceable or removable for maintenance
  • Eyeglass compatible interior
  • E.Q.R.S. (Emergency Quick-Release System) allows emergency medical personnel to easily remove the cheek pads from the helmet of a rider involved in an accident, in turn making the Shoei GT-Air more easily removable

Standard Chin-Strap Clip:

  • Neatly secures chin strap

CNS-1 Shield System:

  • CNS-1 three-dimensionally curved shield is both wider and taller than the CX-1V it replaces
  • Includes Pinlock Anti-Fog Lens for more coverage of the CNS-1 shield
  • Dual-Ridge window bead increases contact with the shield to reduce wind noise
  • Scratch-resistant shield coating
  • 99.9% protection from harmful UV A&B rays

Safety Certification:

  • DOT

Let's see...

Size is bulky, your shadow looks like Charlie Brown (this is to be expected, what with the internal sunshield and all).

I've never tried on other Shoei helmets so I cannot comment on whether the headshape is the same as other Shoei helmets, and since "intermediate oval" is subjective I cannot comfortably say that my head (which fits this helmet perfectly) is an "intermediate oval". So just know this: if your head shape is like mine, you will be fine *Nods*.

By using the sizing guide, you will find that the helmet is uncomfortably tight when new. Trying to get it on was almost like someone reversed a video of giving birth. But after wearing it for a while, it breaks in and becomes snug, comfortably hugging your head (as it should).

Vision is great as long as you are not tucked. Your peripheral isn't impaired at all, though the helmet's horizon does get in the way if you start tucking in, even if you are just a bit past the 3/4ths riding position.

If you wear glasses like me, there are handy grooves in which you can slide your glasses into. However, your glasses will still fog. I've found that by removing the chin curtain you can reduce the fogging somewhat (though this increases noise). Removal of the chin curtain also allows you to stick a bendy straw up there for you to breathe through. In hot weather, you can also use the straw to cool down your sweet chest hair.

If you leave the visor in the cracked position (closed but not clicked in) there will be a whistle when you're riding. This disappears when you click the visor down to secure the gasket.

The internal sunshield is great. The slide to flip it down/up is smooth. However, it does seem to turn smudgy when you flip it up and then back down. Perhaps whatever is up in the slot where the sunshield goes is directly rubbing the sunshield. This isn't a large issue, as you can use a microfiber cloth for glasses and clean it. Distortion is minimal, if any at all.

Noise... I have nothing to compare this helmet too, so I can't say. Seems fine to me, dampens noises well in the city. Just the other day, a tourist named Steve asked me for directions and I asked him to repeat himself four or five times cause I couldn't understand what he was saying with my helmet on. When I finally got the question and responded, he couldn't hear what I was saying and in the end just became frustrated and drove off. So screw you, Steve. On the freeway, you should probably wear earplugs to save your hearing if you want to hear your grandchildren's voices.

Wind seems to flow right around this helmet when you are facing forward, but you definitely feel the wind during headchecks. However, I have an almost negative amount of muscle, so that's probably just me.

Venting is noticeable, but more so if you're bald. I gave myself a number 1 haircut (stupidest idea of my life since it was during winter) and had to keep the top vent closed cause I got too cold. Now that my hair has grown back, I don't notice the effect of the top vents as much (top vents also have different adjustability with how open they are, though I don't notice a difference there). Chin/mouth vent is great. Unfortunately, if you overheat like me, these vents won't be enough and you will need to crack your visor open.

Ending thoughts:
- get this helmet if you are commuting on a bike that allows you to sit 3/4ths to upright
- my fingers are tired
- there are probably cheaper alternatives if you are broke

Pricey but worht it.
I just received one of the brand new Shoei GT Air helmets from a pre-order with Revzilla - another fast, flawless transaction, by the way. This will be the 3rd Shoei helmet I've owned, the other two being the Hornet dual sport and RF-1100. I've tried on the Qwest and Neotec several times, so I can speak to the fit comparison to them as well. For this review, I was able to go on a solid 30 minute ride in this helmet at sustained speeds up to 70mph.

Right out of the box, the finish quality is everything we've come to expect from Shoei. My helmet is solid white and the paint and clear coat are flawless. I didn’t put the GT Air on a scale but I’d guess it’s about the same weight as the RF-1100. The breath deflector and pinlock lens are included but separate. You’ll want to install both items because like the other Shoei’s I’ve owned the GT Air fogs up easily, if not instantly. The chin curtain is pre-installed and is thicker than other Shoei curtains. It feels like it has a thin layer of foam in between the fabric layers, which I think helps make this a very quiet helmet. You'll get the typical Shoei helmet bag, manuals and decals but also included is a curious little bottle containing silicone oil. This is intended for use on the face shield gasket to promote a better seal. I'm interested to see how that works over time.

The liner is plush and padded on the sides but a little rough on top (I'm bald, FWIW#, almost like a soft scouring pad. It’s not uncomfortable, just noticeable. It's the same fabric used on the crown of the liner in my Hornet, which softened up with use. The vents and face shield operate with strong, positive response, though I wish the lowest detent of the shield was a bit lower. The opening is wide, providing excellent periphery vision. I found the “cracked” position to be too small to clear the helmet and my glasses from fog. That’s not a mark against this helmet, just my preference. I particularly like that the GT-Air has a much simplified vent system with one big, easy to find/operate front intake and one equally easy rear exhaust, as opposed to the RF-1100's six, small vents #2 front and 4 rear#. This makes opening and closing all the venting much easier while riding. I ride a V-strom with a Givi windscreen on an adjustable MadStad bracket. The vents on the RF-1100 were just a little too low on the forehead to catch much air without adjusting the windscreen down. The top vent on the GT-Air fixes that issue for me. Regardless of the windscreen position, I get a ton of air through those big vent and exhaust holes on top.

The star attraction to this helmet is the internal sun visor. I can testify that it lives up to the hype. The slide mechanism functions very smoothly and positively, is easy to find #even with thick, winter gloves), distortion-free, dark, and drops down further than other internal shades, fully shielding the eyes. I wear glasses and the internal visor was one of the big reasons I bought this helmet. I'm happy to report that my glasses slip very will into the helmet and to not interfere with the sun visor. I have a Sena Bluetooth system in my helmet, which sits just below and well clear of the visor slide.

FIT: First of all, it's true to Shoei sizing. I'm a medium in every other Shoei helmet and I'm a medium in the GT Air. However, not all Shoei helmets fit the same. For me, the Qwest is just too roomy around the top and sides of my head. I can almost rotate it forward and off my head. A size smaller is hard to get on and very painful against my forehead. The hornet fits my head snug and secure all around. The RF-1100 is an excellent fitting helmet as well, slightly less snug than the Hornet on me and easier to put on and take off. I was considering buying the next larger size of cheek pads for the RF-1100 before the GT Air was announced.

I've heard it said that the fit of the GT Air is similar to the new Neotec. I've tried on the Neotec at a local retailer and I would say that's probably a fair comparison around the crown of the head. Both are what I consider solidly intermediate oval. However, it's an unfair comparison around the cheeks, chin and lower part of the head. A full-face helmet is by design stiffer around the lower portion of the shell and simply has more area for larger, longer cheek pads and more bolster around the neck. And cheek pads are what this helmet has in abundance. They are thicker out of the box than those in the Hornet, RF-1100, or Qwest. This can make the GT Air feel pretty tight when you first go to put it on. In fact, it's definitely more work to get on than the RF-1100 or Hornet. The fit is very snug but not uncomfortable. I've never been certain what "race fit" is but I have to think the fit of the GT Air approaches it.

The result of the thicker cheek pads, padded liner, and padded chin curtain is a quieter helmet. I think it’s significantly more quiet than the RF-1100, especially at speeds below 55mph. At 60mph and higher, no helmet is quiet enough to wear without earplugs, IMO and the GT is no exception. Absent from this helmet however, is any whistling through the vents or a cracked open face shield.

Like my other Shoei's, I expect the GT Air to have a break-in period, eventually softening a bit and conforming more to my head. All in all, I’m extremely impressed and pleased with the GT. It’s a pricy helmet, but I think in this situation, you are getting what you are paying for: a high quality, safe, feature-packed helmet that works extremely well. And it looks great too.

Good helmet but a bit noisy
Overall I am pretty happy with this helmet. Did a lot of research before buying this one and had a pretty clear idea of what I was buying. I bought the helmet because I was looking for a good allround fit, something that looked good and had great safety scores.

The helmet fits well, the visor locks very well, the vents work great and drop down sun visor does the trick. No complaints there. This is obviously a solid helmet.

One minor issue is the air flow in my particular riding position. I ride a Harley and sit up straight. I thought I had read that this helmet was good for both a sport and touring position but in my experience the helmet is not perfect for when you are sitting up straight. Noise from air flow is way louder than when I tilt my head slightly in a downward facing angle but that makes for an uncomfortable riding position.

It is not a huge issue and I would still recommend the helmet for all other features.

I want to love it, but my bike doesn't
This is a great helmet, don't get me wrong. I have had this for over a year now and have worn it for thousands of miles, a lot of that being on interstates. This will move so much air it leaves parts in your hair!

The downside for me, is I am on a sports-touring bike in a very upright position. It makes the vent very noisy even with plugs in. If you have a sports bike with a 3/4 tuck riding position, don't think twice, GET THIS helmet. I can tilt my head down a little like it would be on a sports bike and it goes completely silent, sadly I cant really ride that way.

Features are great, the pinlock shield works as it should, the fit is perfect (had to get the smaller cheek pads). Love the internal sun visor, I will only buy helmets with that feature from now on.
You can tell this is a very high quality helmet, no complaints about it what so ever, it just doesn't suit my sitting position sadly.
Paint has held up great too, couple little scuffs from being dropped in the house, but that happens, and it was my fault.

I ride a 2012 Kawasaki Concours 1400 with handlebar risers.

Great helmet with awesome fetures.
I wanted to wait until I had ridden plenty of miles in this helmet before I made a review. I have had this helmet for about 3 months. I have ridden with it in city traffic as well as on long rides though the canyons. It has become my go to lid, and my x-11 has been bumped to track days.

My last helmet is a Shoei X-11 that I still use. I was concerned it would be not as much of a long oval like my X-11 or Arai Signet Q that I am comfortable wearing. When the helmet arrived the helmet was a little tight, but my concerns were alleviated after a few days wearing the helmet on my 30 minute commute. Since then it has loosened up a little and has broken in wonderfully. I wear a large on my Shoei X-11 and a medium in Arai. The large was the right choice for me and the helmet profile is a good fit for my head.

The liner is comfortable against my skin, and I would say that it is a step up from my X-11 in the form of comfort and wicking away sweat. The liner does like to grab on to Velcro. I find this annoying because my winter jacket has a Velcro collar. The Velcro in the collar likes to grab onto the chin strap while I am trying to turn my head to look over my shoulder. Maybe this is more the jackets problem...

The quality is everything you would expect from Shoei. I bought the anthracite color and the finish is excellent with no orange peel or swirl marks. The helmet visor has a positive engagement from shut and open. I feel like the visor makes a much smoother transition from open to close compared to the x-11. And that brings me to the pinlock visor. I like this option, and it works really well. While ridding the pinlock cover on the visor remains clear of any condensation or fog. If you ride a lot, you need a pinlock visor.

I love the flip down sun visor. It works great, and I don’t think I will ever buy another helmet without one. I find the tint of the flip down visor to be spot on, though some may want it a little darker. I rode for about 30 minutes into the setting sun and felt little discomfort from the brightness.

I find the vents to be a little wonky, but they are big, easy to find, and easy to operate. Venting has been great, but I have yet to really test out the vents as it is cold right now. This summer will be the true test of the vents. The helmet comes with a removable chin curtain. I felt it was annoying against my beard, so I took it off and have not had it on since.

I am glad I bought this helmet and would recommend it to anyone looking for a helmet with a flip down visor and good airflow.

I love this lid
I loved the idea of a built in sun visor but prior executions of the concept didn't impress me. The GT Air, however, is awesome. The optical quality and tint level of the sun visor are excellent and riding at low speed in town, etc., with the clear visor open and the sun visor down is quite comfortable. It's also terrific in the mountains when you're going in and out of the sun, and as the sun sets. It's so nice not to have to stop and change your visor and it's easy to operate on the bike.

I feel like it fogs a little at stoplights if I don't open the face shield, but then again I haven't installed the pinlock anti-fog lens that came with it, so I guess that's on me. $500 is a lot for a helmet, but I also have a thousand dollar Ruby and compared to that, the GT Air is a steal.

First Shoei Helmet
I really like this helmet. Pinlock ready with included lens.
A bit noisier than what i was expecting, but I wear earplugs when riding distance so it does not really matter. I don't feel the airflow very much but I know the hot air is being pulled out because I am not sweating. Liner comes out easily for comm install. Helmet does not feel heavy at speed. I wanted the safest helmet, purchased full face versus modular. The good thing is, I don't think about my helmet when I'm riding, so it must be doing it's job correctly.

Expensive helmet, but a good one
Purchased this because it fit more comfortably than my previous one, and because I wanted an integrated sun visor. My older helmet was fairly noisy, but this one is noticeably quieter and the sun visor is great. No complaints, except for the higher price tag.

Great helmet
I bought this helmet to cut down on noise and it worked. This helmet is just made with such quality compared to some of the other helmets I looked at. Well worth the money. I would buy this again even if they doubled the price.
