Highside/Lowside podcast: Motorcycle rentals and ride shares

May 26, 2025

If you're reading Common Tread, odds are you have a motorcycle. So why would you rent one?

Lots of reasons, actually.

Maybe you live in Maryland, you want to cross the Pacific Coast Highway off your great roads bucket list but you don't have two weeks off from work to ride across the country and back. So you fly, rent, and ride, instead. That's even more essential if you live in Maryland and the bucket-list road is in the Alps. Or maybe you just want to try a different kind of motorcycling. Some people rent a bike as a way to get an extended test ride of a model they're considering buying.

Not only are there lots of reasons you might want to rent a motorcycle, but there are also more options than ever before. In this episode of Highside/Lowside, Zack and Spurgeon are joined by two guests to look at all sides of the topic of riding other people's motorcycles. Our colleague Ari Henning regularly rents out his Kawasaki Versys 650 and talks about that side of the experience. Also joining the discussion is Dax Harlow of MotoQuest, which operates guided tours in countries around the world and also rents motorcycles to people wanting to take rides on their own. Harlow, whose title at MotoQuest is Chaos Coordinator, is partly responsible for taking care of MotoQuest's fleet of more than 100 motorcycles and has some advice for would-be renters.

Learn all about renting motorcycles, play the motorcycle sound guessing game, and more, in the latest episode of Highside/Lowside.
