GoPro HERO4 specs confirmed

Sep 27, 2014

Specs have been flying around as rumors for the past week, but a clearer picture is finally emerging of some of the details on the latest and greatest in action cameras. The GoPro HERO4 will be launched with 4K video at 30FPS and built-in touch display. Unfortunately, those features will come on two separate models.

The latest from GoPro once again doubles in performance by both improving image quality and using a twice as powerful image processor. Bumping the 4K video mode to 30 frames per second (fps) makes that 4K footage much more useable for a much wider variety of applications. Word is, the physical shape will be the same or similar enough that our giant box of cases and accessories will work with the HERO4 (phew).

Getting manual controls for the exposure is huge, especially for those of you who are using, or plan to start using, drones in the near future. If we're honest, that's most of us. The only downside is the new model will force you to choose between 4K at 30fps (HERO4 Black) and the touchscreen display (HERO4 Silver).

The GoPro HERO4 Black:

  • 4K video up to 30fps
  • 2.7K video up to 50fps
  • 1440p up to 80fps
  • 1080p up to 120fps
  • 12MP photos up to 30fps
  • Ultrawide, medium, and narrow lens settings
  • Manual controls for ISO, exposure, and color (across all settings)
  • Exposure settings for "nighttime shooting"
  • Built in WIFI and Bluetooth
  • Mark key moments in video for later

The GoPro HERO4 Silver

  • Touchscreen display
  • 4K video up to 15fps
  • 2.7K video up to 30fps
  • 1440p video up to 48fps
  • 1080p video up to 60fps
  • 12MP photos up to 30fps
  • Manual controls for ISO, exposure, and color (across all settings)

Lots of the rumor sites have included bits about improved image stabilization, which is pretty much the last feature needed to make the GoPro perfect for filming on a bike. The official release date for the HERO4 is Oct. 8. What a perfect way to cap off INTERMOT.
