2024 Benelli TRK 702X and Imperiale 400 first look

Feb 06, 2024

The Benelli lineup in the U.S. market expands in 2024 with the arrival of the TRK 702X adventure-tourer and the retro-thumper Imperiale 400.

Established 1911, Benelli is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. While the brand’s operations remain in Pesaro, Italy, Chinese conglomerate Qianjiang Motorcycle purchased Benelli in 2005. The mid-size TRK 502 adventure-tourer and Leoncino scrambler were among the models to make it to the United States in recent years and the lineup grows to seven models this year.

Middleweight bout

Benelli’s flagship ADV joins a heavily contested adventure-tourer class with an eight-valve, 698 cc parallel-twin engine. That’s hardly a surprise in the twin-saturated middleweight market, but the engine’s 180-degree crankshaft is a departure from the popular 270-degree firing order. The thoroughly modern mill also benefits from liquid cooling, dual overhead cams, electronic fuel injection, and twin 41 mm throttle bodies.

No bash plate, no problem: Benelli’s accessories catalog offers off-road-oriented add-ons like a lower engine guard and crash bars. Tourers will also appreciate options like the oversized windscreen, side bags, top box, heated grips, and heated rider seat. Benelli photo.

What’s all that engineering amount to, you ask? Benelli lists the 702X at 70 horsepower (at 8,000 rpm) and 51.6 foot-pounds of torque (at 6,000 rpm). A six-speed transmission transfers that power to the back wheel while a slipper clutch eases transitions between the gears. All necessary equipment by today’s standards.

Benelli plops its p-twin into a steel trellis frame suspended by a beefy 50 mm inverted fork and link-type, fully adjustable monoshock. The former offers 5.5 inches of travel while the latter yields 6.8 inches of rear-wheel travel. A 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear hoop slightly limit the model’s off-road capabilities, but the mounted Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires align with category competitors. Benelli trusts braking to dual 320 mm discs and a two-piston caliper up front. A single-piston binder mates to a 260 mm rotor out back.

Benelli’s lineup also includes the road-based TRK 702. The model doesn’t just drop the X from its name. It also adopts 17-inch cast wheels, a four-piston front caliper, and reduces rear wheel travel to six inches. It retails for $7,899. Benelli photo.

Technology features aren't absent on the 702X, either. A five-inch TFT color display enables Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation via Wi-Fi. All-around LED lighting, backlit controls, and USB/USB C sockets elevate the package. For the touring crowd, a 5.3-gallon gas tank, passenger grab rails, and center stand also come standard. Starting at $8,499, the 2024 TRK 702X is available in Anthracite Grey, Forest Green, White, and Moon Grey.

Simpler times

Benelli pays homage its own Motobi Imperiale of the 1950s with the 2024 Imperiale 400. The brand promotes the model as an “easy-to-ride retro motorcycle.” Its 374 cc, single-cylinder engine is a big reason, as the mill musters just 21 horsepower (at 5,500 rpm) and 21.4 foot-pounds of torque (at 4,500 rpm).

The Imperiale 400’s 30.7-inch seat height is friendly but its 452-pound curb weight is far from light. Benelli photo.

The air-cooled thumper also captures a retro silhouette, vertically oriented in a double-cradle steel frame. Benelli reports 4.76 inches of travel for the model’s conventional 41 mm fork, but the twin rear shocks only allow two inches of travel. A 19-inch front wheel, 18-inch rear wheel, and the Maxxis Promaxx tires they roll on also call back to simpler times. The brakes are largely pedestrian as well, with a 300 mm single rotor and two-piston caliper fore and a 240 mm disc and single-piston caliper aft.

Bennelli paints the Imperiale 400 in Glossy Black, Maroon, and Glossy Silver color schemes. Benelli photo.

What’s the real draw here? The vintage look, of course. That includes a classically shaped tank with rubber knee pads, a sprung seat, a pea-shooter muffler, and strut-mounted fenders. At $4,899, the Imperiale 400 also carries an attractive price tag.
