Shoei RF-1200 Marquez Black Ant Helmet

Celebrate the youngest MotoGP rookie-champion since Kenny Roberts with the Shoei RF-1200 Marquez Black Ant Helmet. Rock it like Marc.

The pinnacle of perfection, the RF-1200 has been designed, from its inception, to be an industry leader in comfort, performance and protection. The wind tunnel tested shell has been optimized to provide a compact and aerodynamic shape, reducing wind-noise, buffeting and weight. Shoei has not only designed the RF-1200 to be one of the most comfortable helmets on the market, but also one of the safest, meeting both DOT and SNELL M2010 safety standards.

Whether you are a track day enthusiast or cross-country cruiser, the RF-1200 will allow you to ride with confidence, freeing you to concentrate on the road and most importantly....enjoy the ride.

Please Note: Wearing the Shoei RF-1200 Maquez Black Ant Helmet does not guarantee pole position performance on the track.

Slim And Light Weight Design

One of the most important features of a quality helmet is that you hardly know it’s there protecting your head. Shoei has reduced the weight of the RF-1200 by using a slimmer design and building a distinct line into the side of the helmet that also serves as an accent. As a result, the new Shoei RF-1200 is lighter than any other Snell certified helmet in the current Shoei lineup.

Shell Construction

The new slim design of the Shoei RF-1200, with its distinct accent cut line, widens the bottom of the helmet to help ease the process of putting the helmet on or taking it off. Further advancing the comfort of the AIM+ shell is the industry leading four shell sizes that the Shoei RF-1200 comes in. The impact-absorbing dual liner consists of two layers incorporating different densities, helping to effectively balance the potential impact applied to the more rigid shell.

Quietness

Through advancements in the aerodynamic shape, improved interior linings and a new and improved shield system the rider will experience a very quiet and comfortable riding experience. The interior of the RF-1200 has achieved a balance of a comfortably soft fit and a firm, stable hold. The new design of the cheek pads also improves the motion of the neck, thus helping the rider to check traffic behind him/her for example.

Shield System

The new CWR-1 Pinlock shield features ribs on top and bottom of the shield to improve rigidity and eliminate bending of the shield caused by wind pressure or the opening and closing of the shield. Independent beading in the top and sides of the helmet help to keep the seal of the shield tight and eliminate any excess air. In addition to the CWR-1 shield, Shoei has developed a new base plate for the RF-1200. The Quick-Release Self-Adjusting base plate is spring-loaded and pulls the shield back onto the helmet, sealing it tightly against wind and rain. The addition of a new five-stage rotating dial allows for fine tuning of the base place for easy shield adjustments.

Ventilation

A large lower three position vent, three upper air vent intakes and four uniquely positioned upper exhaust outlet vents combine with the Dual Density EPS liner to allow cooling air to travel unrestricted through tunnels created in the EPS liner.

Features:

  • Four shell sizes
  • Dual density EPS liner
  • Superior ventilation
  • 3D Max-Dry System II Liner
  • E.Q.R.S. (Emergency Quick-Release System) CWR-1 Shield System
  • Neatly secure chin strap
  • Includes Pinlock pins and lens insert
  • Includes breath guard and chin curtain
  • Snell M2015 and DOT Certified

Note: Due to manufacturer restrictions, Shoei products can only be shipped to addresses within the United States.

Great helmet!
Wasn't in the market for a new helmet but saw this Marquez graphic and made the impulse buy. Graphics look great in person; clean edges and colors look good. This helmet is sharing duties with an Arai Vector 2 so most of my comparisons are drawn between the RF-1200 and the Vector 2.

The RF-1200 is about the same weight as the Vector 2; I believe the Shoei is a few grams lighter officially. The interior of the Arai is nicer (IMHO) with regard to comfort and plushness than the RF-1200 but not by much. I hate visor swaps on the Arai (I've watched the Revzilla video numerous times and just can't get it); but with the Shoei it doesn't get much easier. The venting on the RF-1200 is good, and is quieter than the Vector 2; part of the quietness I attribute to the added chin skirt on the Shoei. The emergency removable cheek pads are nice extra feature and hopefully never get used. I've noticed with the RF-1200 the opening is narrower (again, IMHO) than the Arai so I find myself having to tug it a bit more to get it over my head. I haven't used the included pinlock insert yet and don't intend to until Fall rolls around. Aerodynamically, it's great, the only time I feel any buffeting is if I'm next to an 18-wheeler and hitting some turbulent airflow off the truck.

The issues I have with the RF-1200 are all minor ones: with the chin vent fully opened air is directed right into my eyes causing them to dry out if I'm at highway speeds. The interior is a bit itchy on my face. Since it's still new I'm hoping the irritation goes away with more wear. For lack of a better term, the 'comfort strap' which accompanies the chin strap doesn't stay aligned at all when cinching the chin strap through the D-ring. This allows the strap to chafe against my neck a little if I don't re-align it. A couple of loops on the 'comfort strap' to feed the actual strap through to keep them together would be nice.

Other random information... my head circumference is exactly 23" which puts me between the medium and large on the chart. The medium fit me perfectly.

No need to really comment or compare build quality between the 2 brands of helmets, they're both top notch.

Picked up the spectra gold mirror shield to go with it and it looks great together.

Great product and even better service!
After an exhausting week of poor customer service this month, it was wonderful to deal with a company that actually cares. The people at revzilla are patient and thorough. They actually talked me out of expedited shipping because the warehouse was so close that 2 day shipping would not be necessary. And as promised the helmet showed up on time. Honestly, if you shop online, this company is the only way to do it.
Thanx Revzilla!

BUY THIS HELMET!
I dont typically do product reviews, but we all know how anoying it can be shopping for helmets, so here i am. First off i never used to fit into shoeis, my head was the wrong shape, so either they changed their designnor my head morphed, either way... this is by far the best helmet ive worn ( past helmets were suomy, ogk, and *cough* and hjc). Initial thought upon putting on was cush galore, and the field of vision is huge. Now to the ride, i like to ride two lane back roads, and bomb highways, the helmets about average for noise, not as loud as my suomy but not as quiet as my old OGK, but by far the most amazing feature is the ventilation, at highway speeds (++) it was almost drying my eyes out it was moving so much air. After a brief stop for gas on a 90 degree day, my head was soaked, visor down and on my way, not even 10miles later my head felt dry and i was as comfortable as when i put it on. The price is more than i wanted to pay but a good helmet is worth its weight (or lack there of), and after my initial ride in it i would absolutly buy this lid again! Stop shopping and just click the add to cart button!

My End All/Be All Helmet
When I first got into riding, I never envisioned myself dropping this much on any piece of gear. Then again, how much is your head worth?

The first thing that I noticed right out of the box was the finish. It evokes a feeling that it is a piece of art. Every graphic is perfectly aligned and the matte looks incredible. I'd imagine it catches a lot of attention with the black ant graphic (reminiscent of the spiderman symbiote). RF-1200s come in multiple shell sizes so this helmet was significantly narrower, lighter, and not nearly as cumbersome as the BELL it replaced which relied on different sized cheek pads for a good fit. Initially, I had a bit of difficulty sliding it on my head but after 2 months I can without a doubt say that it feels molded to my head and as if it was made specifically for me.

When riding, it physically feels like it's an extension of you. The soft cheek pads wick away sweat extremely well, vents do an exceptional job of flowing in fresh air (in temperatures upwards of 90F), and in the grand scheme of things it is incredibly quiet with all of the vents open or shut. Your mileage with wind noise may vary as I wear foam earplugs (you should too as hearing loss from wind noise is very real). Every vent is easily accessible and has its own unique tactile feel. My previous helmet's controls sloppily loosened after a months' use but these still feel solid and I imagine they will after 5 years.

The pinlock insert that comes with it has 100% eliminated fogging in every situation I've been in. I don't want a helmet without one now. Installation is literally a snap(I suggest watching Anthony's video about them). Speaking of snappy, the visor release mechanism has a small learning curve to it but is completely tool less which makes removal for cleaning or swapping a breeze. There are a number of different face shields to choose from. I personally run a chrome finished visor. The baseplate that attaches it is fully adjustable to make changes to the tightness of the seal between the visor and helmet. I'm still experimenting with this as I have a slight whistle that occurs at speeds over 60MPH and only when I turn my head to the right.

Lastly, I think it's worth mentioning the upkeep of the matte finish as this may be a deterrent to some. I'm careful not to touch it when my hands are oily as it will stain the finish. The best way to care for the helmet is by using a spray bottle containing lukewarm water, a microfiber cloth, and a plain wet paper towel. I liberally spray the helmet down with the water and wipe right behind it with the wet towel. I let it sit for a minute or two and come right behind it with my cloth. If you let dead bugs sit too long, THEY WILL STAIN the white areas of the helmet.

In summary, I think it's fairly clear that I love this helmet. I'd stockpile several of these if I had the space and could afford to. I see no reason not to buy this over similarly priced helmets with personal tastes in graphics withstanding.

Great all around helmet!
Now, I know that Helmets are very subjective and it depends on what your head shape is. But there are some things that everybody can feel. This RF1200 has been the best helmet I've ever used. The helmets I've had in the past are (in order of purchase) Scorpion Exo 750, Bell Star Carbon and an Arai RXQ. The Exo 750 was a great value but the RF1200 does everything better. I was really banking on the Arai to be great but it just didn't have the stability and I found myself having neck pain as the helmet tried to rip itself off my head at speeds. The Bell Star was very stable but the noise levels were outrageous. The RF1200 is as stable as the Bell but not as loud. However, it's not as quiet as the Arai. Loudness is very subjective to your head shape though.

One thing I wanted to say about the airflow is that I could adjust it to my preference. In the Bell and the Arai, no matter what I did with the vents, I was just guaranteed wind going right into my eyes. This is bothersome for me since I wear contacts. Here, if I close the chin vent, the air doesn't go into my eyes at all.

I love the way the Shoei looks too. I got the Marquez graphics. I'm not one to get someone's number plate on me, but I thought that it was actually the best one they had. I liked the No Limit graphic a lot but I can't ride around with the words "No Limit" on my helmet. lol

One word of caution: be careful when adjusting the visor using their shield mechanism. I stripped both screws and now they're stuck in the position that they're in. They must have made those screws out of swiss cheese. I have to figure out how to remove them now and install the new face plates that I bought. However, I think you SHOULD adjust your visor because it made the helmet quieter. Once I sort this out, I'll fiddle with it more because many people are riding with this helmet without any noise at all.

Now, I just have to wait for their photochromic face shield. That was another favorite feature that the Bell Star had.

Love this helmet!
I came from a Suomy Spec1-R which was very light but also pretty noisy. When it was time to upgrade I wanted something that was just as light, with a small shell, and quieter. This helmet met all those needs!

Best Helmet I've Owned
I picked up the Marc Marquez Black Ant RF1200 and it was worth the hassle. Shoei will not ship to Canada so it was shipped to family and they shipped it to me, still saved me $$$.

The helmet itself is amazing. The fit and finish is top notch. I also recently pickup a new HJC RPHA and this RF1200 blows it out of the water in terms of material quality.

I'm an intermediate oval shaped head and usually fit a Icon Small but in my RF1100 and this RF1200 I'm a medium.

The helmet is quiet for a race/track helmet and it's an improvement over the RF1100.

I wouldn't hesitate getting another.

This question is to Revzilla,
I bought this helmet recently after trying M versus L size on the same helmet at another store and my size is L.
Initially the week it was nice but now this helmet started to give me constant headache on my forehead as soon as I take it off.
Can you please help me out on this because this is an expensive helmet and cannot afford to ride with headaches? Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: Hi,
I would get the large one. I like the medium one coz that fits my head well enough. Now it is slightly a lil tight on the medium size.. If your looking to be in the middle you might wanna look into AGV helmets coz they have ML(medium large). Hope that helps! Thanks!
I recently purchased this helmet and planning on mounting my 3M Helmet mount for my HD Ghost-S Drift Camera and down the road i decide to take it off (with proper procedure - heat gun or hair blower) will it peel the matte finish off the helmet? thank you
