Shoei RF-1100 Glacier Helmet
Shoei RF-1100 Glacier Helmet
Bought this helmet to replace my Shoei RF-1000, and this is such an improvement especially when it comes to vision. The matte black with the Hi-viz looks great.

Very good all around helmet and looks cool.
I am just a novice rider returning to cycling after many, many years and seeking protective gear that also looks good. I like the black helmet with the high visibility markings. Fit is comfortable too. My only complaint is that it did not come with the anti fogging insert. That has not been a problem though because the ventilation seems very good. However, including one would have been nice for someone wanting the option of using it or not. I would recommend this helmet to anyone looking for a cool helmet with high visibility while having DOT and Snell approval too.

Been around the world and back to this helmet
Not literally around the world, but around the world of helmets anyway. The RF-1100 fit me better than the Arai Vector 2, which was my other main consideration, and the graphics on the Glacier are just awesome (better than the matte hi-vis option on the new RF-1200 in my opinion). Finish and quality on this helmet are obviously outstanding, better than Arai (again IMHO).
Only downside, which can be a major one (and very nearly led me to choose another color scheme despite my love affair with this one), is that while the matte paint on the Glacier is absolutely stunning, it is as fragile as a fabrege egg. Just tapping it with a slightly greasy finger can stain it pretty much permanently. Wiping it down with a microfiber rag and water only can not only scratch it (use a 100% cotton rag! like an old t-shirt instead of microfiber), but will immediately bring a slight shine to the original flat black finish. In other words, you just have to learn to accept the fact that it will only look brand new perfect for, well, until the first time you touch it or wipe it down.
Don't get me wrong, I've seen store display models of this helmet that have been manhandled by dozens of random hands, and it still looks awesome (at a distance). For my part, I am just going to avoid touching it with my bare hands whenever possible and use only non-polishing cleaners on it, and live with the inevitable change of appearance no matter how much it pains me. But if you are in any way OCD, do yourself a favor and buy a glossy version of this helmet.
Shoei really would have been better off making their flat paint a semi-gloss or a rubatone. I've heard people say they hate rubatone, but I have a flat black rubatone HJC CL-16 cheapo helmet, and it doesn't stain with prints NEARLY as bad as this finish does. I've read that the flattening agents in the matte paint basically have a rough/random surface unlike a gloss which is smooth, so any polishing (even just cleaning with a wet rag and pressure) is inevitably going to smooth out the surface a bit and make it more reflective/glossy. Same reason why fingerprint oils and cleaners with polish and waxes will have the same, and largely irreversible, effect.
Combine the flat black with the fluorescent yellow which fades over time when exposed to ultraviolet radiation (ie sunlight), and this helmet comes with TWO stickers on the visor disclaiming them from warranty claims due to the paint, so obviously this is a known issue. If they made a glossy version of the helmet in the same color scheme I would have gotten that, but the matte does look sick, and it's supposedly their best selling helmet, so apparently enough other people are willing to overlook the shortcomings of this finish.
Paint aside though, the helmet is the best I've found in all the ones I've tried, and I'm a Shoei guy for life now.

good mid-level helmet
I compared the RF-1100 Glacier and the Arai Vector 2. Both helmets are about the same price, about the same weight, about the same fit. Besides the subtle difference in fit and features the two helmets were nearly identical, with exception to style. I really like the pattern of the Glacier and for me that was the deciding factor.

Physical and Mental comfort for a first helemt
Bought this at the Revzilla shop in Philly and had some awesome customer service. My head was sized very quickly and I was shown this helmet as a costlier and more comfortable alternative to another similarly featured helmet. The comfort sold me, it was night and day.
Only con is that I wish Shoei would include a pinlock faceshield.

Comfort is incredible
The moment I put this helmet on, I felt like it was custom made to fit me. Revzilla's sizing advice is spot on. With the vents all closed up, it's eerily quiet although you'll probably want to notch the chin vent down one just to keep it from fogging up. Even with them all open in hot weather it's still very tolerable. I'm continually amazed at how far to the sides I can see without needing to turn my head, and that's a huge help when checking for lane changes as I don't have to turn my head as far. The matte material does pick up prints/dust, but it's easy enough to clean up and the hi-viz coloring is excellent. Be aware, although Pinlock is advertized all over the place with this helmet, it doesn't come with a pinlock shield. I don't really feel like it "needs" one, but I may pick one up later to see what all the fuss is about. I do like the multi-position visor lock it has and on hot days tend to leave it slightly unsealed to let in just a bit more airflow.

AWESOME HELMET AWESOME SHOP
I was visiting my girlfriend out in Philly where she goes to med school and was looking for shops around the area and was so pumped to find out you guys have a retail store pretty close to her. I drove down on a Saturday and spent without a doubt the most time with a retail sale person I ever have and I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. He went over every feature, showed me the pros and cons of every helmet in the price range both above and below. Once I decided on this helmet he went over every feature in depth and the do's and don'ts. I can't wait for my next visit to stop down at the shop again!!!
