What's this?

Shark Race-R Pro Carbon Fiber Helmet

The new, high-end SHARK Race-R Pro Carbon is constructed from carbon/aramid fibers, was initially developed for Shark's top level racers: Moto GP, WSBK, Moto 2…. Can you imagine the level of requirement these riders have? Shark therefore had to ensure top level performance, giving the utmost importance to functionality and ergonomics: lightness, stability, comfort, precision and aerodynamics. Because the requirement from top racers is two-fold: safety and leading-edge technology. Shark must protect in critical situations, and must also contribute to their riding performance. The Shark Race-R Pro Carbon gives you the same level of excellence as it does to elite riders.

Shark's mantra is simple, "Just race! We care about the rest."

The Race Pro-R is Shark's new high end composite fiber helmet. Totally designed through a reverse engineering process, the Race-R Pro Carbon has been developed from technical data as close as possible from human head specifications. Shark has therefore taken into account your own constraints before considering its own. From the very first track tests, riders have acknowledged its stability, even above 300 km/h, its comfort and the precision of the wide angle vision field as well as its optical distortion-free shield.

"The Race R PRO concentrates all what I am looking for in a helmet when riding my bike. In fact, it contributes to my riding performance." Randy de Puniet, June 22nd, 2012.

Thanks to wind tunnel testing, Shark has minimized unpleasant cyclonic airflows on the Race R Pro by adding a double blade spoiler. Result = Stability. The Race R Pro ventilation system is a synthesis of the most efficient ventilation:

  • 4 air scoops: chin (with integrated anti-pollution air filter) + front + 2 top vents
  • 7 extractors
  • 3 possible positions: closed, intermediate, fully open
  • Optimization of venturi effect thanks to Formula1 wind tunnel testing

Features:

  • Super Light Weight Carbon/Aramid Fiber shell
  • ~4.5 dB(A) quieter than the standard Race-R Pro in wind tunnel testing
  • Sharktooth-ready
  • Shark Easy Fit glasses system offers wearers a comfort lining which has a pre-fitted system to accommodate all types of glasses
  • Spoiler CFD
  • 2 shell sizes
  • Double D chin strap
  • Magnetic chin strap end
  • 4 anchor points for main shield
  • 4 air flow points with optimized venturi efficiency
  • Shield has variable density: minimum thickness 3mm, maximum thickness 4.25mm, with new anti-scratch/anti-fog coating
  • Thermo shaped comfort lining
  • Removable and washable antibacterial liner
  • Cheek pads are interchangeable for custom fit
  • Neck roll with neoprene sections for elasticity and water resistance
  • Breath guard with new attachment system
  • Chin curtain
  • ECE 22.05 and DOT approved

Subtle and Effective Improvements
Instead of rewriting my whole review of the Race-R Pro, (which you can find here: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-kimbo-helmet) I will just go over what makes this helmet even better than its predecessor.

Huge improvement in the quality of the liner material. It feels infcredibly plush and wicks sweat more effectively. It also looks nicer with the offset color they used in there. I will say that the cheek pads on this seem slightly fuller than the previous, which shouldn't be a problem unless you have a bigger face. But they have different sizes that you can buy from Revzilla I think.

Weight. It isn't a huge savings, but it is enough to make a difference at race pace. Not sure if the new compound they use for the shell does anything different than the previous in the way of protection, but it has a 5Star Sharp rating....so I'm good with that.

Lastly, the look of the thing. It is just plain sexy in the matte Black with Carbon inlay. Lots of compliments.

I love this helmet for its fit, comfort, venting, aero, looks, and protectivity. You should spend a little extra coin to protect your brains and look good. They aren't mutually exclusive ya know.

First Shark helmet.
As the other reviews have mentioned about the retailers, I was skeptical about buying a helmet I couldn't try on. After trying a few high end helmets on and not liking the fit, I figured I'd give this a try and just return it if I was dissatisfied. The medium fits my narrow melon perfect! (Size 7 1/8 cap)

Not really a fair comparison due to the price difference, but this helmet is just so much better than my old Scorpion EXO-1100. After riding for years with mid to lower end helmets, this thing is hardly noticeable on my head. I've only went on a few rides now so can't really comment on durability or if it maintains the nice fit but as far as noise/weight/fit go at the moment I give them all a 5/5.

Second Shark Helmet
This is my second Shark helmet. I have grown to like and prefer Shark helmets over others, not because I had a bad experience with another brand, but because this was the first brand of helmet I owned and have been in a high speed accident and my head always felt safe. The helmet is light weight and SORT of quiet at lower speeds, at higher speeds it does tend to get a bit noisier and has a lot of wind noise. My head in it though felts likes its in a chamber of its own and safe at all times.

Great for the 3/4 tuck or full tuck, quiet
I purchased the Race R Pro in black. Great helmet, very quiet on the freeway and even quieter in the full tuck position. Great air flow through out the helmet. Only thing I really wish Shark would work on is the chin strap, the magnet always pops off when I look over my shoulder to switch lanes, it flaps around quite a bit and its difficult to attach it again with gloves on. Shark needs to just add a button to keep the end of the strap put other than that the helmet is perfect.

excellent race helmet
First off this helmet will pass tech with the AFM . I believe a guy had problems with getting through tech with WERA because the US models only have DOT marked on outside of the helmet. I had almost zero fogging in the morning at Buttonwillow and at the same time my eyeballs weren't getting blow dried. So the vent system on this helmet works very well. The fit is tight but comfortable . No excess movement. The magnet for the chin strap is useless so I just tucked it in . My only real complaint is the tab for the visor was a little hard to find and takes a bit of force to flip up . When rolling back into the pits I like to flip up the visor and about half the time I couldn't get it. I could pop the visor up once I stopped on the grid after the warm up lap . So it's not all bad . Overall this is the best helmet I have raced in so far . If it fits your head it's a very good choice.

Uggh, On my very first trip with the new lid...
I was excited to receive this helmet as I really thought that it looked great and felt at ease that it earned a Sharp 5 Star safety rating. I wore it for 2 weeks going back and fourth to work. During that time there was a break in that was welcome. It was very stiff and on the edge of painful. It did break in and felt great after that. I also learned my lesson. I didn't buy it from Revzilla and wish that I had since I would feel I have recourse. I took a trip from Southern California to Laguna Seca with buddies and during the trip the cheaply glued on chin finishing strip peeled off and in the wind tore the rest of the vinyl u-shaped piping back towards the sides. The result was a flapping against the helmet so annoying that I went to by crazy glue at a convenient store and had to do roadside surgery. I made a mess, but I wasn't willing to dissemble my helmet/sena roadside hundreds of miles from home while the rest of the group waited. The bigger injury is that I have sent several emails to Shark and have not received any type of answer. I guess their warranty reduction plan is to ignore claims. Never again from Ebay, never again a Shark

Uncomfortable for my head shape
This is a high quality helmet that exudes quality. I really wanted to like it but it just doesn't fit my head shape. The name is apt because it felt like it was trying to bite my head off. The only other helmet I've tried that was this uncomfortable for me was a Shoei. My hunch is that someone who likes the way Shoeis fit might like this one as well.

I do have some issues with Shark as a company. First, they only have 1 authorized retailer in the US and it's in TX. I would have liked to had the chance to try one on without having to order it and then deal with a return. Second, they only imported half of their available graphics for this helmet to the US. If you buy the same exact helmet from an overseas merchant, you don't get a US DOT sticker. Both issues seem to suggest that Shark isn't very committed to the US market. They've been around forever. They support major race teams. But they could do more to win us over.

I was looking for a high quality helmet and was in between the RF-1200 and Arai Corsair V. I eventually ended up with the Shark Race-R Pro for their Eyeglasses feature.

will the space for the Bluetooth battery fit the sena smh10r battery? If not can it be altered to fit?
A shopper on May 18, 2014
Hi, what are the differences between the Race R Pro and the Race R Pro Carbon ?
A shopper on Sep 8, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The Carbon is suppose to be lighter by about 4oz or ~100g. I do not own a Race R Pro so the accutal wieght difference I can not verify. I will say that the Race R Pro Carbon is about 200g heavier than a RSR2 V1.
There is a difference between the neck roll on the 2012 vs the 2013 models though. The 2013 models are said to be not as loud as the 2012 models.
Hopefully I'll have the time for a nice write up on this helmet soon.
Can a person switch out the visor for one with detents?
A shopper on May 18, 2014
I am looking to replace 1 or two RSR2 helmets. Lets just say one has saved my noggin and I am using the second. I like to switch helmets (not wear the same one everyday/or after getting caught in the rain). Is the fit pretty much the same because I wear an XL in the RSR2? Also is the extra $50.00 worth it between the Pro and Pro Carbon. Last thing, I am not a racer/knee dragger. I am a touring rider and rides everyday rain or shine. So on the hot days, does this helmet create the airflow the RSR2 does? I love the opening at the top of the RSR2. I know one may think this helmet does not fit my purpose; however, I like the design protection that is in the helmet. Thanks!
A shopper on May 5, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This a very high quality helmet. I have the carbon version and consequently it is very light. It is one of the quietest helmets I have owned. It is very comfortable, although I did have to purchase some thinner cheek pads so my face wasn't so squished up. The neck opening is a tight squeeze through the padding but, once you're in, it is very comfortable. The bamboo lining is very nice and seems to be of a very good standard. The visor is the most substantial I have ever had. I believe it's about 4mm thick!
The airflow is good and keeps the visor clear in cold weather. What do you call hot? Here in Australia it regularly gets to over 110F, and I found that it started to get a little uncomfortable at anything less than freeway speed. At high speed the helmet performs marvellously in both airflow and stability through the wind blast. Apart from the occasional heat wave this is my favourite helmet in my small arsenal. As comparison, my other helmets are a Shoei xr1100 and a HJC ac12(?)
Can the visor be locked open?
A shopper on Aug 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not really. Its reasonably secure and the hinge is pretty tight (its adjustable) but a good sharp nod will close it
I want to know exactly what this helmet weighs ?
Chris E on Mar 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 3.1 lb vs 3.6 arai corsair
