Shark Race-R Pro Carbon Fiber Helmet

The new, high-end SHARK Race-R Pro Carbon is constructed from carbon/aramid fibers, was initially developed for Shark's top level racers: Moto GP, WSBK, Moto 2…. Can you imagine the level of requirement these riders have? Shark therefore had to ensure top level performance, giving the utmost importance to functionality and ergonomics: lightness, stability, comfort, precision and aerodynamics. Because the requirement from top racers is two-fold: safety and leading-edge technology. Shark must protect in critical situations, and must also contribute to their riding performance. The Shark Race-R Pro Carbon gives you the same level of excellence as it does to elite riders.

Shark's mantra is simple, "Just race! We care about the rest."

The Race Pro-R is Shark's new high end composite fiber helmet. Totally designed through a reverse engineering process, the Race-R Pro Carbon has been developed from technical data as close as possible from human head specifications. Shark has therefore taken into account your own constraints before considering its own. From the very first track tests, riders have acknowledged its stability, even above 300 km/h, its comfort and the precision of the wide angle vision field as well as its optical distortion-free shield.

"The Race R PRO concentrates all what I am looking for in a helmet when riding my bike. In fact, it contributes to my riding performance." Randy de Puniet, June 22nd, 2012.

Thanks to wind tunnel testing, Shark has minimized unpleasant cyclonic airflows on the Race R Pro by adding a double blade spoiler. Result = Stability. The Race R Pro ventilation system is a synthesis of the most efficient ventilation:

  • 4 air scoops: chin (with integrated anti-pollution air filter) + front + 2 top vents
  • 7 extractors
  • 3 possible positions: closed, intermediate, fully open
  • Optimization of venturi effect thanks to Formula1 wind tunnel testing

  • Super Light Weight Carbon/Aramid Fiber shell
  • ~4.5 dB(A) quieter than the standard Race-R Pro in wind tunnel testing
  • Sharktooth-ready
  • Shark Easy Fit glasses system offers wearers a comfort lining which has a pre-fitted system to accommodate all types of glasses
  • Spoiler CFD
  • 2 shell sizes
  • Double D chin strap
  • Magnetic chin strap end
  • 4 anchor points for main shield
  • 4 air flow points with optimized venturi efficiency
  • Shield has variable density: minimum thickness 3mm, maximum thickness 4.25mm, with new anti-scratch/anti-fog coating
  • Thermo shaped comfort lining
  • Removable and washable antibacterial liner
  • Cheek pads are interchangeable for custom fit
  • Neck roll with neoprene sections for elasticity and water resistance
  • Breath guard with new attachment system
  • Chin curtain
  • ECE 22.05 and DOT approved

First Shark helmet. As the other reviews have mentioned about the retailers, I was skeptical about buying a helmet I couldn't try on. After trying a few high end helmets on and not liking the fit, I figured I'd give this a try and just return it if I was dissatisfied. The medium fits my narrow melon perfect! (Size 7 1/8 cap) Not really a fair comparison due to the price difference, but this helmet is just so much better than my old Scorpion EXO-1100. After riding for years with mid to lower end helmets, this thing is hardly noticeable on my head. I've only went on a few rides now so can't really comment on durability or if it maintains the nice fit but as far as noise/weight/fit go at the moment I give them all a 5/5. October 11, 2013
Subtle and Effective Improvements Instead of rewriting my whole review of the Race-R Pro, (which you can find here: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-kimbo-helmet) I will just go over what makes this helmet even better than its predecessor. Huge improvement in the quality of the liner material. It feels infcredibly plush and wicks sweat more effectively. It also looks nicer with the offset color they used in there. I will say that the cheek pads on this seem slightly fuller than the previous, which shouldn't be a problem unless you have a bigger face. But they have different sizes that you can buy from Revzilla I think. Weight. It isn't a huge savings, but it is enough to make a difference at race pace. Not sure if the new compound they use for the shell does anything different than the previous in the way of protection, but it has a 5Star Sharp rating....so I'm good with that. Lastly, the look of the thing. It is just plain sexy in the matte Black with Carbon inlay. Lots of compliments. I love this helmet for its fit, comfort, venting, aero, looks, and protectivity. You should spend a little extra coin to protect your brains and look good. They aren't mutually exclusive ya know. September 27, 2013
Uncomfortable for my head shape This is a high quality helmet that exudes quality. I really wanted to like it but it just doesn't fit my head shape. The name is apt because it felt like it was trying to bite my head off. The only other helmet I've tried that was this uncomfortable for me was a Shoei. My hunch is that someone who likes the way Shoeis fit might like this one as well. I do have some issues with Shark as a company. First, they only have 1 authorized retailer in the US and it's in TX. I would have liked to had the chance to try one on without having to order it and then deal with a return. Second, they only imported half of their available graphics for this helmet to the US. If you buy the same exact helmet from an overseas merchant, you don't get a US DOT sticker. Both issues seem to suggest that Shark isn't very committed to the US market. They've been around forever. They support major race teams. But they could do more to win us over. July 25, 2013

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Jason N: I was looking for a high quality helmet and was in between the RF-1200 and Arai Corsair V. I eventually ended up with the Shark Race-R Pro for their Eyeglasses feature. Mar 23, 2015
EDGAR R: I selected this product because of the high level security that this one offers (sharp web site source) Oct 12, 2014
Cark T: To replace my RSR2 that I can't get checkpads for anymore. I hope it fits. Sep 10, 2013
A shopper asked: I am looking to replace 1 or two RSR2 helmets. Lets just say one has saved my noggin and I am using the second. I like to switch helmets (not wear the same one everyday/or after getting caught in the rain). Is the fit pretty much the same because I wear an XL in the RSR2? Also is the extra $50.00 worth it between the Pro and Pro Carbon. Last thing, I am not a racer/knee dragger. I am a touring rider and rides everyday rain or shine. So on the hot days, does this helmet create the airflow the RSR2 does? I love the opening at the top of the RSR2. I know one may think this helmet does not fit my purpose; however, I like the design protection that is in the helmet. Thanks! May 5, 2014

Tim V: This a very high quality helmet. I have the carbon version and consequently it is very light. It is one of the quietest helmets I have owned. It is very comfortable, although I did have to purchase some thinner cheek pads so my face wasn't so squished up. The neck opening is a tight squeeze through the padding but, once you're in, it is very comfortable. The bamboo lining is very nice and seems to be of a very good standard. The visor is the most substantial I have ever had. I believe it's about 4mm thick!
The airflow is good and keeps the visor clear in cold weather. What do you call hot? Here in Australia it regularly gets to over 110F, and I found that it started to get a little uncomfortable at anything less than freeway speed. At high speed the helmet performs marvellously in both airflow and stability through the wind blast. Apart from the occasional heat wave this is my favourite helmet in my small arsenal. As comparison, my other helmets are a Shoei xr1100 and a HJC ac12(?)

Jennifer F: It's close to the same fit shape with the 2013 model+, I understand the 2012 model is slightly more oval. I've had 3 RSR2's and bought the 2013 helmet. I'm a medium in the RSR2 and in the Race-R Pro I'm also a medium. Fits great for me.

The carbon is slightly lighter and looks fancier with the carbon. That's all up to you.

The airflow is still great with this model. I like the neck gusset because I have trouble with wind flow to my eyes, causing them to water with my contact lenses. With the RSR2's I had to use a Respro Foggy mask to prevent that happening. The gusset is really nice for that. However, it may change the wind flow you're used to if you like it coming up from the bottom of the helmet. It's much quieter with the gusset, too.

Also, the visor is fantastic, though the hinge is slightly different than with the RSR2 for swapping visors out (I have a dark smoke and clear). You'll have to get new visors if you want a tinted one.

Omar S: I do not know which bike you have.
But I bought this helmet because I had then a Yamaha R1. I sold the bike and bought a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200.'s Helmet is great, the noise level is very low, however very warm on hot days.
For a touring bike I would not recommend it, here in my country they speak highly of the Shoei Neotec. I'm awaiting the arrival of Shark Explore for testing.
In relation to RSR2 I have never used and do not know how.
Hope this helps.
Nice ride!

A shopper asked: Hi, what are the differences between the Race R Pro and the Race R Pro Carbon ? Sep 8, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Cark T: The Carbon is suppose to be lighter by about 4oz or ~100g. I do not own a Race R Pro so the accutal wieght difference I can not verify. I will say that the Race R Pro Carbon is about 200g heavier than a RSR2 V1.
There is a difference between the neck roll on the 2012 vs the 2013 models though. The 2013 models are said to be not as loud as the 2012 models.
Hopefully I'll have the time for a nice write up on this helmet soon.

Stephen D: I own both a Race R Pro and a Race R Pro Carbon. The most noticeable difference is in the additional cowl or curtain around the neck (the neck roll mentioned above) that makes the Carbon quieter. It also feels lighter to me--but not by much. Mar 28, 2014

yannick w: As the video says it's a weight savings mainly. I haven't tried the regular pro but I can say the carbon is a really light helmet. May 7, 2014
