Shark Race-R Pro Carbon Fiber Helmet

The new, high-end SHARK Race-R Pro Carbon is constructed from carbon/aramid fibers, was initially developed for Shark's top level racers: Moto GP, WSBK, Moto 2…. Can you imagine the level of requirement these riders have? Shark therefore had to ensure top level performance, giving the utmost importance to functionality and ergonomics: lightness, stability, comfort, precision and aerodynamics. Because the requirement from top racers is two-fold: safety and leading-edge technology. Shark must protect in critical situations, and must also contribute to their riding performance. The Shark Race-R Pro Carbon gives you the same level of excellence as it does to elite riders.

Shark's mantra is simple, "Just race! We care about the rest."

The Race Pro-R is Shark's new high end composite fiber helmet. Totally designed through a reverse engineering process, the Race-R Pro Carbon has been developed from technical data as close as possible from human head specifications. Shark has therefore taken into account your own constraints before considering its own. From the very first track tests, riders have acknowledged its stability, even above 300 km/h, its comfort and the precision of the wide angle vision field as well as its optical distortion-free shield.

"The Race R PRO concentrates all what I am looking for in a helmet when riding my bike. In fact, it contributes to my riding performance." Randy de Puniet, June 22nd, 2012.

Thanks to wind tunnel testing, Shark has minimized unpleasant cyclonic airflows on the Race R Pro by adding a double blade spoiler. Result = Stability. The Race R Pro ventilation system is a synthesis of the most efficient ventilation:

  • 4 air scoops: chin (with integrated anti-pollution air filter) + front + 2 top vents
  • 7 extractors
  • 3 possible positions: closed, intermediate, fully open
  • Optimization of venturi effect thanks to Formula1 wind tunnel testing

  • Super Light Weight Carbon/Aramid Fiber shell
  • ~4.5 dB(A) quieter than the standard Race-R Pro in wind tunnel testing
  • Sharktooth-ready
  • Shark Easy Fit glasses system offers wearers a comfort lining which has a pre-fitted system to accommodate all types of glasses
  • Spoiler CFD
  • 2 shell sizes
  • Double D chin strap
  • Magnetic chin strap end
  • 4 anchor points for main shield
  • 4 air flow points with optimized venturi efficiency
  • Shield has variable density: minimum thickness 3mm, maximum thickness 4.25mm, with new anti-scratch/anti-fog coating
  • Thermo shaped comfort lining
  • Removable and washable antibacterial liner
  • Cheek pads are interchangeable for custom fit
  • Neck roll with neoprene sections for elasticity and water resistance
  • Breath guard with new attachment system
  • Chin curtain
  • ECE 22.05 and DOT approved

Good This is my second shark helmet and not my last i have x-large head so most of the time helmets are heavier than normal but not with Shark their helmet are light and comfortable. October 12, 2015
Very good helmet This helmet is very good. Very light and the air moves around the shell very well even at speeds over 100mph. With the chin vent open at speeds over 70 it is very loud and you have to close the vent or slow down. The little black rubber piece around the bottom of the chin came off and had to be super glued within two months of riding. The helmet feels best in at least a 3/4 tuck. you can run headphones in the helmet as well without any discomfort. The air is pulled out of the helmet at the top very well and is cool. I was between the L and XL and should have went with the XL because the large is small but still fits nice. Leaves the cheek pad marks on my face after only 45 min or so. The carbon fiber matches my black '11 GSXR 750 very nicely. Even though the carbon fiber did have some marks and white streaks in it, it looks nice July 11, 2015
Great helmet but watch your ears I got the Race R Pro Carbon Race helmet and love the build quality of it. Everything is well made. The size is right for my head but is a bit tight around the cheeks. (Bought some smaller cheek pads to see if it fit better) I know this is a race fit helmet but to put in on and off, the narrow opening scrapes my ears every time. I'm hoping that the material or foam will break in? Once the helmet is on, it is comfortable. The noise is slightly quieter than my Shoei Qwest. I thought the weight might be lighter but I think it is about the same. April 18, 2015
Best Value for Money The extremely high quality of the Shark Race R Pro Carbon Skin is eminent, from the moment this helmet is in your hands. It has the finest finishes. It does everything you'd expect from a Top Class Moto GP level helmet, and the price is what really helped me to make my decision to buy this helmet. It goes on your head like a glove, it's extremely comfortable, and once you ensure it's positioned on your head properly your vision is clear and wide. If you keep your head still and look furthest left and right, you have optimal vision with no obstruction. If you look forward and vividly observe your peripheral vision, you'l notice there is still no obstruction at all. This allows you to notice things beside you easily. Ventilation is phenomenal when you get all vents opened up on a hot day. The visor in particular was a huge selling point for me, it's the thickest in the market as far as race helmets go and comes with all the bells and whistles as far as the tech side of things go. I'm an oval shaped head, I'm from Cape Town South Africa and this fits excellently for me. In person this helmet is absolutely stunning. The only trouble I've had with it, is taking it off. It's not a terrible experience, it's a rather tight ejection off from your head. But all of that makes pretty good common sense when you start thinking about what this helmet was made for, +300 KM/hour... Easy on, superbly light and comfortable, you will quite literally forget this helmet on your head when you're focused. I feel that this was the best decision I made so far, against everything else that is available. When it's time to look at purchasing another helmet or I have more money to blow, I'll certainly purchase another one of these. Common sense alone, has dictated me buying two of these over a full carbon AGV PISTA. This helmet is like a dream that has come true. I hope my review helps the oval head shape community of the world. Ride Smart everyone! Wesley February 7, 2015
WARNING CCS/ASRA RACERS - NO ECE 22.05 CERTIFICATION STICKER Regardless of how much I like this helmet, Shark did not affix an ECE 22/05 certification sticker (possibly only on helmets bound for US markets). DOT is not accepted for road racing with CCS/ASRA. NOTE: The Race R Pro (non-Carbon) I bought previously was stamped for ECE 22.05 (shown on the right) whereas the Race R Pro Carbon on the left only has a DOT/FVSS No.218 sticker. The shark user guide PDF was not updated for the Race R Pro Carbon they just added an additional note with the helmet that says that Race R Pro Carbon and Race R Pro can be used interchangeably. That's all well and good until you're trying to tech your bike with no kickstand and hold your helmet, gloves, boots, leathers, belly pan, and back protector while trying to explain to the tech inspector that your helmet really is ECE certified even though it doesn't say it anywhere. very good it's worth!!!!ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg July 1, 2014
Not what I expected Waited for this thing for 3+months. When I received it, I thought it would be darker. It's really a medium light grey with blue and with blue/white highlights. Additionally, there are two "carbon" pieces that have been glued to each side. I bought a dark shield to replace the original clear, and had the most difficult time trying to get it on. In fact, I never was able to get it installed. The holes did not line up properly, and this was confirmed with the guys at Revzilla. But what ultimately made me return it was that the little piece at the front part of the helmet, just under the chin FELL OFF!! WTF?? So, I bought an ARAI. April 25, 2014
Shark missed the mark This is a race helmet, and from a protection standpoint lives up to the Shark quality. I had an RSR2 that I absolutely loved. Based on that, I chose the Race-R as my replacement. Fit: very true to Shark numbers. Around the head is nearly identical to my previous helmet. The cheek area is very narrow and extremely tight. So much that the helmet is hard to put on and to remove. Features: The new visor system is about the only move in the right direction. I don't think it could be any easier or a simpler design. The magnetic strap retention is a joke. It doesn't hold the strap securely. The "batman" style rubber breath guard is uncomfortable and not adjustable like the old RSR2 breath guard. It pulls tight across the bridge of the nose and doesn't follow the contour of the face allowing air to pass up to your eyes. As a contact lens wearer, this is a problem. The skirt at the bottom of the helmet is a good idea, but some elastic should have been added to the chin piece. Loose and flapping in the wind is worse than it just not being there. Performance: I've only spent an hour in this helmet. It is very stable at speed, but has an annoying whistle at speeds above 50mph. Could just be my helmet. It's also a bit noisier than my RSR2 was. With modern aerodynamic modeling and testing, neither of these issues is excusable. If I could return this helmet for a full refund, I probably would. April 13, 2014

Darin Y: Gotta protect the melon! Enjoy a stylish, comfortable helmet while you do so. Aug 10, 2015
Jason N: I was looking for a high quality helmet and was in between the RF-1200 and Arai Corsair V. I eventually ended up with the Shark Race-R Pro for their Eyeglasses feature. Mar 23, 2015

Cark T: To replace my RSR2 that I can't get checkpads for anymore. I hope it fits. Sep 10, 2013
A shopper asked: I am looking to replace 1 or two RSR2 helmets. Lets just say one has saved my noggin and I am using the second. I like to switch helmets (not wear the same one everyday/or after getting caught in the rain). Is the fit pretty much the same because I wear an XL in the RSR2? Also is the extra $50.00 worth it between the Pro and Pro Carbon. Last thing, I am not a racer/knee dragger. I am a touring rider and rides everyday rain or shine. So on the hot days, does this helmet create the airflow the RSR2 does? I love the opening at the top of the RSR2. I know one may think this helmet does not fit my purpose; however, I like the design protection that is in the helmet. Thanks! May 5, 2014

Tim V: This a very high quality helmet. I have the carbon version and consequently it is very light. It is one of the quietest helmets I have owned. It is very comfortable, although I did have to purchase some thinner cheek pads so my face wasn't so squished up. The neck opening is a tight squeeze through the padding but, once you're in, it is very comfortable. The bamboo lining is very nice and seems to be of a very good standard. The visor is the most substantial I have ever had. I believe it's about 4mm thick!
The airflow is good and keeps the visor clear in cold weather. What do you call hot? Here in Australia it regularly gets to over 110F, and I found that it started to get a little uncomfortable at anything less than freeway speed. At high speed the helmet performs marvellously in both airflow and stability through the wind blast. Apart from the occasional heat wave this is my favourite helmet in my small arsenal. As comparison, my other helmets are a Shoei xr1100 and a HJC ac12(?)

Jennifer F: It's close to the same fit shape with the 2013 model+, I understand the 2012 model is slightly more oval. I've had 3 RSR2's and bought the 2013 helmet. I'm a medium in the RSR2 and in the Race-R Pro I'm also a medium. Fits great for me.

The carbon is slightly lighter and looks fancier with the carbon. That's all up to you.

The airflow is still great with this model. I like the neck gusset because I have trouble with wind flow to my eyes, causing them to water with my contact lenses. With the RSR2's I had to use a Respro Foggy mask to prevent that happening. The gusset is really nice for that. However, it may change the wind flow you're used to if you like it coming up from the bottom of the helmet. It's much quieter with the gusset, too.

Also, the visor is fantastic, though the hinge is slightly different than with the RSR2 for swapping visors out (I have a dark smoke and clear). You'll have to get new visors if you want a tinted one.

Omar S: I do not know which bike you have.
But I bought this helmet because I had then a Yamaha R1. I sold the bike and bought a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200.'s Helmet is great, the noise level is very low, however very warm on hot days.
For a touring bike I would not recommend it, here in my country they speak highly of the Shoei Neotec. I'm awaiting the arrival of Shark Explore for testing.
In relation to RSR2 I have never used and do not know how.
Hope this helps.
Nice ride!

A shopper asked: Hi, what are the differences between the Race R Pro and the Race R Pro Carbon ? Sep 8, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Cark T: The Carbon is suppose to be lighter by about 4oz or ~100g. I do not own a Race R Pro so the accutal wieght difference I can not verify. I will say that the Race R Pro Carbon is about 200g heavier than a RSR2 V1.
There is a difference between the neck roll on the 2012 vs the 2013 models though. The 2013 models are said to be not as loud as the 2012 models.
Hopefully I'll have the time for a nice write up on this helmet soon.

Stephen D: I own both a Race R Pro and a Race R Pro Carbon. The most noticeable difference is in the additional cowl or curtain around the neck (the neck roll mentioned above) that makes the Carbon quieter. It also feels lighter to me--but not by much. Mar 28, 2014
