This helmet has it all. Killer looks. Feather light. Amazing ventilation. Perfect aerodynamics. Comfortable fit.
First, sizing. I used the Revzilla sizing video, and the fit came out perfect. I was skeptical, since I wear an XL HJC helmet, but the Bell L fit me perfectly. It fits snug, as a race helmet should, but comfortably. My eyeglasses fit a bit tighter than I would like, but are comfortable when positioned into place. There are a wide variety of sizes available for cheek pad replacements, so getting a custom-fit should not be a problem.
If you've done your research at all, you'll see everyone raving about the ventilation of this helmet. Make no mistake about it, they're all dead-right. Your head will stay cool in the hottest of days. All this ventilation, however, comes at a cost. This helmet is extremely loud. I was surprised that closing the vents seems to make little difference on the noise level. However, the majority of the noise seems to be coming from air being sucked through the chin area, even with the chin skirt installed! At highway speeds, when I cover the chin opening with my glove, the noise level drops considerably! I'd guess that fitting a larger chin skirt would dampen the noise considerably, but probably at the expense of ventilation performance.
This helmet is incredibly stable at all speeds. I have not installed the track-strip, as I have little need to be North of 130MPH, however the helmet is extremely stable well into arrest-me-please speeds. Head checks are no problem at all, and it finally doesn't feel like my head will get ripped off when changing lanes! Some reviews mention this helmet is best suited in the tuck-position, however, I find it to be just as stable in an upright-position as well.
The shield quick-release system is great, and it's a snap for cleaning. I love the smooth detents, so I can position the shield exactly where I want it. However, I find the 3Mode system to be a total gimmick. First, it's too tricky to push the lever with a glove on to be useful. "Cracked mode" is not cracked enough to be useful at stop lights. The lowest detent in "friction mode" is by far more usable. "Locked mode" is too difficult to disengage at lights when I need quick air. Additionally, I have not found "locked mode" to decrease the noise level in the slightest. I cannot visually see any difference in how tightly the shield is locked down between "locked" and "friction" mode. So, I leave the helmet in "friction" mode, which makes it operate the same as every other helmet I've ever used.
It is awesome that Bell includes a bag with this helmet. Other manufacturers charge an extra $30, or more, and give you a bag that usually sucks. This is probably the highest-quality helmet bag I've ever seen, and it comes as a freebie! Can't beat that!
Finally, the SolFX Photochromic shield completes the total package. I won't go into it in detail here, but this is a major selling point for any Bell helmet, and in my opinion, a must-have if you are considering buying this helmet. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny in my opinion. The Carbon Matte looks killer when the shield is fully-dark. Then at night, you have perfectly clear visibility.
So, is the Bell Star the perfect helmet? No, but it's as close to it as I've seen!

This is my first Bell helmet. I watched the review that revzilla did for this helmet and it was right on point. This is the most I've ever paid for a lid and it was well worth it. Once you put the helmet on you notice how comfortable the padding is, then how this helmet blocks out a lot of noise, third its super light weight, and last you can see soo much out of it. The color of this helmet in person is 12 times better than the picture or video shows. This lid is a eye catcher. I also put the trainsitional faceshield on this lid and its a great addition.

Good afternoon,
I just wanted to share my positive experience with the new 2012 Bell Star (Matt Carbon) Helmet.
I was on the hunt for an alternate helmet to my Arai XD3, which is great for slower rides, but not too great for longer hauls on the Highway/Freeway at higher speeds (visor acts as a very effective sail!).
I looked at all sorts of helmets including Arai, Shuberth, AGV and few others, I wanted a high quality helmet, and I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", so I was looking at helmets on the 450-800 dollar range. The Arai were nice, the Shuberth C3 was nice, but I really didn't want to take the chance of having the same issue as others did with the fit, I also thought the modular helmet thing was a bit "nerdy". The AGV's were nice and light (and cool looking), but the fit was wrong for my head.
I was even looking at purchasing the really nice looking Shuberth SR1 from a EU distributor, but I couldn't get a straight answer out of the folks in EU as to how I might be able to pay for the helmet using my credit card (their loss).
Enter BELL. I had noticed the Bell Star a few times during my search, because the shape and style really caught my eye. I kept clicking on the helmet to check it out, but was really skeptical due to the fact that it was a Bell helmet. My concern was that Bell has lost a lot of their "street cred" over the past six years (or more) and the quality was not on par with the brands I mention above.
Then I started some deeper research and learned that Bell was sold off once again a couple of years ago to Giro Helmets (cycling helmets I have used for years). I have a deep appreciation for Giro, and I know their attention to detail very well from my own personal experience using their products for the past twenty'ish years! I also learned that Giro is part of the parent company Easton (the carbon fiber specialists), whom I also have a ton of respect for.
Then I started reading the reviews that were posted on various sites to see what users had to say. I could not find a single review of the Bell Star (2010 forward) that had anything but positive stuff to say. Then I saw the new 2012 Matt Carbon Fiber model that just launched, and I had all the info I needed to move forward with the purchase. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/b...n-solid-helmet
I took delivery if the helmet last week, and I can tell you that this helmet is one of the nicest I have ever seen. The carbon weave is perfectly executed. The helmet is very light, and the style is very well designed (not too flashy, but cool). Also the fit and finish is really well executed, with very tight tolerances between the small parts. The fit of the 2010 and later models is on par with Arai (if you wear a Med Arai, you wear a Med Bell Star).
The liner is incredibly soft and comfy. The air flow is unbelievable, and can be trimmed to meet you desired level of cooling. The aerodynamics (the main reason I was looking for another helmet) are really great. I can finally head check at speed without feeling like my head is going to ripped off my neck. Also the annoying flutter effect caused by windscreen turbulence is GONE! (BTW I ride a 2011 R1200 GS with a shortened windscreen). Also, this helmet is WAY quieter than my Arai. I still love my Arai, and I suspect the main culprit in making the Arai noisier is the visor, so I'll still be using my XD3 for slower stuff and off road trips.
I don't work for Bell, and I have no ulterior reason for writing this review other than the fact that this helmet simply exceeded my expectations, and I can imagine others would have the same apprehension I had about dropping big bucks on a Bell given their less than stellar reputation for putting out quality products a few years ago (warranted or not, perception is reality).
I know how hard business can be, and Bell earned my respect, so I thought I would share my positive experience.

This is a seriously awesome helmet! I've specifically got this model for the airflow (and of course the graphics, who am I kidding) since I live in a hot country (U.A.E.), which means that I am riding always with air vents open. And this, perhaps, is the only slight downside of this lid - noise. And I mean plenty of noise. Even though I always ride with ear plugs, it is still a step louder than my other AGV Stealth SV. Also, I've noticed that sometimes I get a bit of a whistling sound at highway speeds. I get the feeling that it might be forehead vents. It happened once so far and I hope it was a one off incident.
Other than that the helmet is a piece of art! Airflow (as mentioned before) is superb. I can literally feel the air on my head, ears, etc. as if I am not wearing a helmet. Fit is comfortable. I really like the magnetic strap. Also, for hot weather, I find very useful the position of the visor when it is just slightly open. So when sitting at lights you do not feel like you are suffocating.
Graphics certainly look much much better than on photos. I've got this helmet with Dark Smoke visor, and they make a killer combo. Yes, the helmet is pricey, but I can 100% justify it to myself.

So I received this helmet as a birthday gift, and boy do I love it!! Super lightweight compared to my last helmet. Beautiful graphics by Roland Sands with a little history behind it. I love the fit but I will be putting the next size down pads in it for next season to snug the fit up for track days. The noise level is down from my last helmet but plugs are still worn to reduce level further. I was given the chance to exchange it with another helmet but kept this Speed Freak because it is just a work of art and i loved all features given out of this helmet.

This is my second Bell Star. The first one just saved my head when an idiot tee-boned me two months ago doing about 40. I was thrown from the bike (Victory Vision) and ended up with a broken shoulder. My head was fine and I distinctly recall it bouncing along the pavement several times before coming to a stop. So, you can see that I'm a bit biased towards the Bell Star line genrally. This carbon version is even lighter than the regular Star and fits perfectly. A lot of money, but for an awesome fitting and performing helmet. The graphics get a lot of attention as well.

So after months of going back and forth trying to decide which helmet I should buy, I decided on this one for several reasons.
- It's awesome. Matte carbon fiber.
- It's super light.
- You can use a photochromic shield with it (tinted in bright light, clear in low light). This was important because I ride my bike every day and in the winter I'm going home after dark and having to roll with an extra shield strapped around me was a pain.
- Amazing aerodynamics
- It feels very safe!
You might think $700 is a little pricey for a helmet, but let's be honest, this is your brain we're talking about not spilling all over the highway. It makes sense to invest the money to ensure you can see and if you do go down, have something safe cradling your skull.
This helmet is light-years ahead of any other helmet I've ever worn and I have no regrets buying it!
Oh and one more thing in praise of Revzilla's customer service - My head sized in at a Small so I ordered that first, but it was too loose on my noggin and they replaced it with an XS no questions asked.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Answer:
The Carbon Star is 2.6455 ounces lighter than the RS1.
RS1 spec lists 1575 grams or 55.5564 oz. or 3.4 lbs.
Star Carbon lists 1500 grams or 52.9109 or 3.3 lbs

I own a Star Cerwinske (non carbon) and an RS1 in gloss black, both size large. The non carbon Star is 1600 grams, 25 grams heavier than the RS1 - that's a bit less than an ounce. I can't feel any difference in weight between the two. I don't know if the Star spec weight includes the optional stick-on spoiler piece. I reviewed both helmets in detail here on Revzilla but since I own both, for your convenience, a short summary here of how they differ:

The RS1 is "cushier" and quieter. Designed with a little more "all around" comfort in mind, it has a thicker more cushioned liner and is a bit more aerodynamic in upright riding positions. It ventilates well and due to the plusher padding, seals nicely around the neck, which seals out noise and drafts up the neck. Venting inside the helmet is very good.

The Star has a leaner, firmer liner and superb ventilation and ventilation control, which makes it noisier. Airflow through the helmet is fantastic and air does come up the back of the neck. I purchased the thicker, firm cheek pads for the Star to ensure a snug, wiggle free fit. I didn't need to do that for the RS1.

Overall - I think both helmets are fantastic! Honestly, it was the Cerwinske pattern that got me to buy the Star, but once riding with it, it does offer superior airflow and airflow control and the aerodynamics at speed are excellent.

One additional note - PHOTOCHROMIC SHIELD IS AWESOME! If you ride day to night often - I commute and do - its worth every penny. Good luck. Email with questions if you want to know more.

So as stated in the videos, the bell star is not as snug as the rs1, which i believe is considered race fit. So, so would getting larger cheek pads make the Star race fit? Or is there no fix to this? Or perhaps getting a size smaller??

Answer:
You should not get a size smaller as it would not fit your head. According to Bell the size is measured at the person temples. If you chose a size smaller your head will not fit.
I want to buy also larger cheek pads for my Bell Star RSD (55mm firm), the problem is to find these for this helmet. It is difficult to find the cheek pads because there are several colors, Bell does not help with the information and I was told by many vendors that Bell has mislabeled the cheek pads recently...

What I will do is probably change the foam in the cheek pads for a firmer one myself...

This is an excellent helmet and I am extremely happy with it (as much that I will buy another one).

Answer:
My response to the weight question touches on this issue. I did purchase the thicker cheek pads for the Star. I also tried on the size M and though I might have managed to wear the smaller size my eye location in the opening was a bit higher than optimal and the shell and protection did not come down far enough on my forehead. I would recommend trying the smaller size if you're borderline between sizes. In may case the fit of the large was perfect on the crown of my head so the best option was to use the larger cheek pads. Overall, a stellar helmet!

Just wondering what head shape this helmet fits. I'm looking for a replacement for my Shark RSR2 (Medium) and was interested in the Bell Star 2010 (carbon). I've tried my friend's 2009 model and in medium it's WAYYyyyy too loose. I was told the 2010 fitting has been corrected... just need info on the head fit (hopefully it'll be as tight as my RSR2).

Answer:
I followed the fit guide provided and result was a correct fit. I found the fit to be medium oval and a tad looser than my Bell RS1, but a change in cheek pads resulted in a perfect fit. I'd say follow the measurement guide and if the fit isn't as snug as you'd like front to back, call Revzilla and swap for the next smaller size. If front to back is good but you'd like it snugger across the cheeks (my situation), order the 50MM firm cheek pads. RevZilla is awesome with questions on fitting and easy about returns to get you a perfect fit so if it isn't right just give them a ring and they'll handle it.

Answer:
The Helmet has a medium oval head shape. Part of the problems with these helmets, Bell as a whole, is that the cheek pads compress so much that when you buy it as a medium new, the pads compress and make it fit like a large. However, the helmets are so nice and reasonably priced its orth it to buy bigger cheek pads when yours get too compressed. Throwing them in the washer and dryer seems to bring them back to life somewhat too.

Answer:
The "clear coat" is factory applied by Bell in the manufacturing process. The design is not actually sharpied onto each helmet. It is a decal designed by Cerwinske for Bell.

I am wanting something that allows alot of air. I am riding a cruiser and looking for an option to ride to work. I've looked at the touring section but I've notice that you placed this as a better airflow than those in the touring. Or am I missing something vital. Yes I am a nube to full face. Rode alot of half helmets but I am getting older (and slower) just wanting alittle more protection. Thanks!

Answer:
The Bell Star is not 'labeled' a touring style helmet and is typically worn in a more aggressive riding position, however, the brow vents will offer a lot of air flow in any riding position. There are a lot of upright positioned riders taking advantage of the Bell Stars Vented design.

Answer:
I don't work for RevZilla but I'm pretty sure that all helmets are required by law to ship with a clear face shield and that tinted shields are not included. I've never bought a helmet that came with a tinted shield, nor one where the tinted could be swapped for the clear on the original purchase. Always had to buy the tinted shield.

FYI - I bought the Photochromatic shield for my two bell helmets (Star and RS1) and It's worth every penny.

How does this helmet fit? I have a rather large head, and I usually have to go with a Arai Quantum 2 or a RX-7 Corsair or else I get hot spots on the top of my head, leading to massive headaches (for example, all the HJC helmets give me this problem).

Answer:
Frankly, I can't imagine getting a hot spot on the top of this helmet. The airflow is massive, including awesome flow through the two top vents. Worth noting - as good as the airflow is - and it really is stupendous - the flow control is also great - and when you close the vents, it isn't leaky. Top marks for flow and air management.
