It's a good upgrade
At first glance it doesn't look like its all that, but once installed it adds a little weight to the coat making it feel a bit safer. Good upgrade.

Great back protector
I put this in an AGV Sport jacket and it fit perfect. I measured the back protector pocket in my jacket first and made sure everything would fit before I ordered it. This made installation effortless. I regularly ride with a small hydration pack and even on an 80 degree ride the combination of my perforated jacket, a t-shirt, the back protector's air flow, and the pack's air flow channels kept me comfortable. I have rode once so far on a 90 degree day and while I was warm sitting at a stop light, I was very comfortable while riding at speed. Comfort wise, I like this back protector much more than the thin foam pad from the factory of my AGV Sport jacket because the protector flows much more air. The added protection is always an added benefit as well given my tendency to care more about fun than riding safely. It is also my by forcefield which is nice to know.
Overall I am very happy with my Joe Rocket back protector.

joe rockets back protector
I will start this review of the joe rockets back protector by saying its true to size but i hope i never get a chance say if it has done its job by protecting my back but what i will say its seems to be a better material than what comes in the jacket 5.0 texile mesh jacket i feel protected when i have thicker padding on. I also like to say that i purchased all of biking gear from RevZilla with assistance by the staff of RevZilla they r knowledgable of all of the products they sell. I am a new rider 6'3 260lbs with long arms and long legs the staff assisted with my purchase of jackets,3/4 coats & pants gloves boots & shoei RF1100 helmet that fit well and looks excellent on me. RevZilla is my motorcycle Store. Thanks Guys and Girls.

Needs a plastic shell
I bought this back protector to go inside my Joe Rocket Atomic 4.0 Jacket. It fits nicely and is not uncomfortable or noticeable while riding. I do wish, however, that it had a hard plastic outer shell like the Dainese Wave G1/G2. I'm not sure if that shell provides and extra layer of protection and I am not planning on finding out, but I feel like it is added peace of mind.

Small upgrade, large expense
After a friend took a spill on one of our recent rides, I decided to upgrade some of my protective gear. I paid $80 for this product hoping it would be like the hard-armor Alpinestars BioArmor Back Protector that I kept seeing at Cycle Gear. Instead, it's just a thicker, heavier, soft-armor back protector that doesn't seem much different than the Dual Density Spine Protector that came with my Phoenix 5.0 jacket. Both offer protection from contact with the road. However, if your back hits something like a reflector pole, I don't see how either product will help much. My opinion is that the cost doesn't justify the very small increase in protection. I recommend doing some research on motorcycle armor and back protectors before buying anything. Apparently, the majority of spinal injuries are caused by blows to the hip and shoulders, which would limit the usefulness of many of these "back protectors."

Good upgrade
I think it is unfortunate that this is not the default back protector that ships with all Joe Rocket jackets in the US, but given that it isn't, this is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone who has purchased a Joe Rocket jacket and wants a higher level of protection.
I have the Phoenix 5.0 jacket. Replacing the pad was easy to do and the new protector fit snugly in the mesh pocket.
The protector is definitely stiffer than the default pad that came with the jacket, so depending on how snug your jacket fits you may or may not notice it (my jacket is pretty snug but I got used to it after a couple of rides).

A recommended upgrade
While I think it is a bit too expensive for what it is, this is an essential upgrade for anyone with a JR jacket. It will definitely provide better protection that the flimsy foam piece fitted, and is a bit more comfortable as well.
