I also have the Shoei Hornet DS helmut. Mine is a size XL. The cheek pads are snug to the point it starts to make my face sore on long rides. Can I change to a 31mm from the 35mm it comes with?

I have a medium Shoei hornet helmet the fit of the helmet is great with the exception of the cheek pads. they are a little snug on my cheeks and by my ear. The pads seem to put pressure to the front of my ear by my cheek.

Answer: 
The 31mm will not fit with the Shoei Hornet DS size Medium Helmet. The cheek pad size is followed by the corresponding helmet size they will fit.
