Great boot for what it is designed for
OK, if you are looking for max protection, look elsewhere. If, however, you are looking for good protection AND a boot that can be worn both around the campsite as well as on the bike, read on.
I bought this boot after trying Revzilla's patience by buying and returning a number of heavier duty boots that just didn't work on my foot/ankle/calf configuration. Having a size 15/50 foot sort of limited my options anyway. (Actually, you can't beat Revzilla's customer service. If you haven't bought from Revzilla before, they are GREAT! If you have, you probably know already.)
After trying to find a boot with a lot of protection that fit my needs, I had almost given up until I read the reviews for this boot. They are correct. This boot offers more protection than your Danners or 5.11's and is comfy enough to wear all day on or off the bike. The boot height goes about half way up my shin (it is about 2" taller than my Danners if that helps you) with nice protection at the top front of the boot. The heel also offers some additional protection as do the sides, though those areas aren't reinforced to the extent some of the track/MX boots are. Nonetheless, I feel like I have much better protection than before.
As to the feel, the boots fit me like a glove. While they aren't what I would wear to a business meeting, I have worn them to the office (casual day kind of stuff, obviously) and have been comfortable in them all day. They required very little to no break in since they felt good from the start. I can't address the waterproof qualities since I haven't had a chance to wear them in the rain yet.
I can't address durability, either, having had the boot only for a couple of weeks. It has a side zip/hook and loop closure design that seems sturdy enough but only time will tell.
Bottom line: if you are looking for a reasonably priced boot that can be worn all day and still give you more protection than many other motorcycle boots, you should give this boot a go.

Good protection, great value for
Great boot, surprised by the amount of venting and my feet were not sweating in 85°+ with a mix of highway and city riding. The entry system is very wide with the zipper and velcro but very snug when closed, just what you want for protection and to keep water out. The Sole of the boot feels firmly planted on the ground at a light even in slippery conditions or gravel. Haven't had them in heavy rain yet but a light shower and they showed no signs of leaking.

Very good
Very comfortable - I am a motorcycle safety coach in Western PA and have to spend all day in my boots and these are very comfortable.
I hope they are waterproof (that has not been tested yet) I previously had a pair of SMX4's and the soles wore out after several years of hard use - no complaints there. My next pair leaked so I bought a different brand which were not so comfortable but they did not leak. I am now going to give Alpinestars another try.

Very comfortable and stylish!
I was looking for a boot that was comfortable, waterproof and of course with some style. Finally I found all I was looking for in the S-MX 5! I had to go up one size compared to my other alpinestars short boots (S-MX 1), but otherwise fit perfectly. They were a little strange at first when shifting but after a couple of rides and walking around they broke in nicely and have already gotten used to shifting in taller boots. This is my first pair of mid-calf length boots and they are quite comfortable. I cannot say enough about the styling on top of the safety features. Have not worn them in the rain yet but they keep the wind and the cold out very well. I feel confident that my ankles and lower shins are being well protected while wearing these boots. Unlike other reviews I've read about other boots' velcro coming undone while going up stairs, these stay on pretty well when walking up and down stairs when it's inevitable. It doesn't rain much in San Diego but it's nice to know you have a waterproof boot in case you need it. Overall I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for protection, style and quality built boots. I also like the fact that these are tall enough so I can tuck in my jeans and look great with slacks when I ride to work. The zipper and the velcro is a nice touch. This boot gives you great value and features for the price!

"Do it all" boot
I'm not really one for prose, so here are my thoughts:
- The width of my feet put me in no man's land size-wise. I normally wear 9.5 US, and opted for the 43. I'm still breaking the boots in but I have found them tight over the top of my foot and a bit narrow.
- I bought them to replace the riding shoes I had been wearing full time because I was looking for better protection. I do feel safer in these boots, but I did manage to take a hit just above the top of the boot a few weeks into ownership. These are a compromise at mid-calf, obviously.
- I have used them for general commuting, wearing around the office, and for a dirt bike class I took. They have performed well and I haven't had any excessive heat from them. I have not been able to wear them the entire workday without a break though. I find they feel better on the bike...
- While my boots have seen 95+ degree weather, I have not tested the waterproofness yet.

Great boots - comfortable, supportive, & excellent protection.
Bought these boots as a "back-up" to my Revit Rival H2Os. After a few days of commuting to the office in the "AStars", they are no longer my "back-ups". These have become my primary/go-to boots.
Haven't had a chance to test the "waterproofness" of these boots yet, but all other aspects are outstanding. Rode 150+ miles this past Saturday in temps ranging from 40-65 degrees & my feet were very comfortable.
Even walking around in these boots for close to 2 hours was no problem. In total, had these boots on for over 7 hours on Saturday & my feet felt great.
I'm a 9 1/2 D in dress shoes & the size 43 fit me perfectly.
Great boots - I recommend them without any reservation.

Another fine product from Alpinestars.
Initially a bit concerned with the tight fit, but the boots broke in after the first day. I have worn them all day at work without a problem. They look great and enjoy the flexibility for street use. Not ultra rigid like a race boot but still provide plenty of protection. Only used for a week so will have to wait and see about durability. My S-MX2s have held up pretty well after a couple of years so shouldn't be a concern.
