Great boots for the price. The boots do seem to be smaller than other comparable boots. They are extreamly comfortable on a ride and even make a good walking boot for small distances! Great rigid performance on the bike but flexable enough for a small stroll. Don't think I would want to walk a marathon in them but back and forth from and around the office is not too bad. Really didn't feel any air flow but didnt buy these boots for that reason. The boots have a great style and function. Would recommend to anyone that needs good boots for a good price.

I ride in some of the most aggressive traffic in the world on a daily basis, and I wanted something with lots of protection. I also wanted some comfort as well, which is hard to match with lots of protection. I have a reasonably sized foot for an American, but I could never find anything that was even remotely comfortable. Come to find out, there's a HUGE difference between European boots (Sidi, ect), and US boots. As soon as I tried the Alpinestars on, I knew that I had found my new favorite pair of boots. My wife laughs at me all the time because I have more boots than she has shoes, and I'm telling you now that these are the most comfortable boots that I own. They have loads of protections, they breathe fairly well, they look good, and they are comfortable. If you are looking for a good boot in this price point, I don't think that you can go wrong. Granted, if you have a narrow foot, you'll probably feel the same way about Sidi boots, so it's all relative to your foot size. But if you have a medium or wide foot, you need to check these out.

Wanted a good boot with better protection than your typical work boot. I was concerned about the width of the shoes. I wear a size 49 wide so i decided to buy the size 50 boot. Glad i did cause the boot fits great. Don't really feel them and they are relatively comfortable to walk around in as well. I don't really feel any airflow but my feet don't get too hot either so take what you will from that. A good buy in my book

These boots are my first mc boots. They fit great with a light pair of socks and are extremely comfortable just like most golf shoes. Walking in them is no problem as they flex well and are very light. The size chart is right on the money. No sweating in 80+ heat.

These boots are very comfortable and feel protective. They feel supportive but do not force your ankles into a super aggressive riding position. The materials and construction seem to be of high quality. I have no problems tucking the bottoms of my knee/shin guards into the tops of the boots. Overall, these seem like excellent boots for everyday street use. I followed the sizing guidelines provided by Revzilla and the size 44 fits my size 10 foot well.

I compared these to the Sidi Cobra and prefer the S-MX 5. The Cobra seems to have slightly better protection (a little taller, marginally larger hard parts), but the S-MX 5 fits my foot much better.
I wear a size 10 in almost all shoes and have a normal width foot. A size 44 S-MX 5 fits me very well and true to size.
It's a comfortable boot to walk around in and offers the sort of protection you would expect at this price point. The calf area is nicely padded but the boot doesn't get too hot (I tried the non-perf version).
It's also an attractive and subtle boot (in black) which you can wear pretty inconspicuously under jeans off the bike (when you're out riding, not out for the evening...).
Overall, a very good entry level boot for those who want a protective and comfortable boot for everyday riding yet still be able to take it to the track a couple of times a year.
If you're a more serious track rider, I'd suggest moving up to the next level of boot so you get some internal ankle protection. That's one area in which I think the S-MX 5 (and other competitors like the Sidi Cobra) is a bit limited.

I will second the answer given already, and if you're looking for the best replacement for the SMX-R, I suggest the SMX-Plus as well, especially for race or track use. Some of the main differences is the calf support / adjustment strap and the additional support at the heel over the SMX-5 boots.

Get the 2011 SMX-Plus. If you like the SMX-R you are looking for a track-day/racing boot. If the SMX-Plus is good enough for Noriyuki Haga to race in, you'll be happy.

Alpinestars does tend to run a bit narrow so I would probably go with the larger size to compensate for the required width needs. You might also check out Sidi Megas or TCX boots as a wider fitting option.
