Alpinestars S-MX 5 Boot 4.7 5 55 55
Alpinestars SMX love these boots, super comfortable and easy to put on. from road racing to taking a long ride on the weekend they will do both. highly recommend for any type rider needing protection but also wanting a comfortable boots June 11, 2014
quality boot These live up to expectations for an Alpinestars product. Good quality construction, decent styling. The most important fact to mention is the fit. I have a slightly wide foot, and have suffered Morton's Neuroma in both feet so I can not tolerate having the metatarsals compressed. Old fashioned leather boots stretch, but modern Lorica/plastic boots are not going to mold to your feet. Italian boot makers make some of the best motorcycle boots out there, but sadly they do so using a skinny Italian last. Sidi and Gaerne are simply too narrow for me. These SMX5s are typical for Alpinestars: the forefoot is just barely wide enough, length is right, but heel cup and instep are sloppy & loose fitting. This has been the case for me in the previous two sets of Alpinestars boots I've had as well. The only boot I've tried which was wider was the Coretech Latigo, but those are grossly inferior. The ventilation in the SMX5 is not all that substantial, and I've had a strange experience where the instep hangs up on my footpeg as I move the left foot to shift. Still, I like these boots. I'd definitely recommend them for someone who wants something a little less armored than a race boot, but still protective. They go under jeans, and don't have articulated plastic armor that creaks when you walk. March 17, 2014
Great boot One of the best boots out there. I strongly recommend these boots! They fit great and are super comfortable. February 7, 2014
Ahhh yeahhhhhhhhh Finally got myself a decent pair of riding boots. I've been looking around for awhile now. I was tempted to go with the MX-2s but thought for the price difference why not going with something more protective. Still breaking mine in at the moment but looking forward to using them this summer. January 21, 2014
Very Comfortable and Good Quality I really love the style of this boot. I've had these boots for about a year and a half and I have worn off the fronts of the toe due to dragging them on the ground. These boots have really held up and are VERY comfortable. They run pretty true to size. I wear a size 13 shoe and I ordered a 12.5 and they fit pretty good. I am 6'1" and the boots sit about 4" below my knees. Airflow could be better, but it isn't bad. I plan on getting another pair of these. December 13, 2013
Fit like a glove Wavered on the S-MX 2 and 5. Decided with the full boot so my shin is protected. Very comfortable on my shin. Took a few days to brake in. Fits true to size though have only worn coolmax socks with them. Love how it doesn't bunch my toes. Very comfortable to walk in even with the toe box and ankle being rigid. Breathes great and not too bad just walking around. Love the slides, amazing slip free sole, and the extra guards on the ankle and shin. Very responsive while riding / shifting; feel everything I do. December 8, 2013
Great Protection So far I've had these boots for about 1 1/2 years and they are still my everyday boot. Personally I think they run a bit on the snug side as I originally ordered a EUR 48(13 US) as that's my normal shoe size, but returned for one size smaller and they fit great, and revzilla's customer service was awesome the whole way through. Break in was fairly quick, and the soles are comfortable enough to walk around in and not look like you just stepped off the ski slopes. With that said the soles seem to wear fairly quickly, especially my left foot which is the foot that's always down when at a stop. I was a little worried about the Velcro becoming weak over time from constantly fastening and un-fastening the Velcro but to my surprise it is still holding strong. I'll also mention the calf area of these boots are quite roomy, I'm 6'4" with an athletic build and I have to snug up the upper calf portion quite a bit too get it to feel secure...probably won't be an issue if using a riding pant that will go inside the boot however . I mainly commute with the occasional twisty-toe drag-thrashing (this is where the sliders come in handy:)) on the weekends and I feel very well protected with this boot. I bought the white and yellow color scheme, that may be a bit loud when walking into work but that's why I bought them. Love the colors, and makes you known wherever you go. I'm an Alpinestars fan since I started riding years ago, and have yet to buy a bad product from them. You definitely get what you pay for with these guys, nothing but quality with everything they produce. Once again a big thanks to the Revzilla team, great site with great customer service to back it up. September 30, 2013
happy with them Good solid comfortable boots, and after I wear them out I will probably get another pair. July 29, 2013

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
S T: I chose this item because im a sport rider, I get a little intense, but the chances im going to the track very often are slim. this boot seemed like it had the most bang for the buck. Nov 16, 2015
Allan R: Loved my SMX-4's, but destroyed the armor in a wreck. SMX-5 feels like a lot more protection than the SMX-4, but not quite as comfortable while walking around. I also feel like the sizing runs a touch big around the ankle, so I have to use the Velcro closure to snug up the boot. Oct 8, 2015
rob n: top brand, solid and comfortable at the same time, zip up side with Velcro held leather over flaps Jul 12, 2015

Joshua E: I got these boots a while back. They are FANTASTIC. Feb 10, 2014
Paul H: I have been riding with shoes for the past year and the reason I haven't bought a pair of riding boots is simply for financial reasons. Now that I have some spare money and have done some research I am excited to have proper riding boots for the foreseeable future. Dec 30, 2013
Terry L: Alpinestars reputation, good value and good reviews. Nov 4, 2013
Andres F: Good as always... can¨t go wrong with these. Sep 25, 2013
A shopper asked: Hi, i'm going to buy my first boots, i need something i can wear all the year (knowing that in summer it may be a little hot, and in winter i may feel some cold) the use will be commuting, and some short trips. I'm deciding between the s-mx5 and the web-goretex, what are your opinions? Oct 18, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Bijon B: I have no issues in the summer. You can honestly fit some warm socks and be fine through the fall (I did fine last season). Don't recommend for winter if that is your thing. Oct 18, 2014
Reply to Bijon Good answer? Yes (3) No (0)
Christopher G: Hello. I'm glad you're considering of getting the SMX-5. I cannot give you my opinion on the web-goretex since I've never owned one nor tried them on. But I will give you the pros and cons on the SMX-5. I've owned my boots for several years now (including my wife's after I've convinced her to buy a pair). I use mine for commuting to work (2 hours roundtrip) 3-5 days a week year round and occasional track and long trips on some weekends. We live in California so the weather is hot in the summer (90s) and cold in the winter (40s). At first, the boots will be stiff (I suggest getting them half an inch or even a full size smaller) as they will stretch. Don't worry if they are stiff but they are very comfortable. In the heat, my feet don't even feel the heat and when it's cold (40-50s with a wind chill of about 20 degrees, my feet are warm and toasty). On the track and on the streets, I am very confident knowing that these boots have plenty of protection. I've also ridden in the rain and they kept my feet dry. Those are the pros. As far as the cons, they will be stiff and being your first boots (true if you've never owned one), you might feel uncomfortable. Don't worry, once you've broken them in, you'll be glad you bought them. Hope I've answered your question. Oct 18, 2014

Jason H: Depends on where your summer and winter weather is at to be honest. These are not 3 season boots but you can get a decent winter boot without spending too much. These are comfortable enough to commute in but they're not designed to be walked around in like other boots made for street riding. Oct 18, 2014

SeViC : Thanks everyone (i was not logged in when i asked) it's true it depends on temps, around here the range is 4ºC to 40ºC something like 40ºF to 110ºF. But anyways thanks for your answers Oct 21, 2014

Charles B asked: The blue version of this boot shows none in stock, anywhere. Is the blue one still in production? Aug 13, 2014

A shopper asked: The video review mentions being able to fit your jeans over the boot to hide the top, but what about having leathers tucked inside the boot? Is the top of the boot roomy enough to be worn on the outside of my leathers? May 12, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
THOMAS J: I don't wear leathers, but I think it shouldn't be a problem. When I pull the zipper up the boot is quite loose around my calf. I pull the Velcro flap tight to snug up the boot around my leg. I don't have monster calves, but I also don't have chicken calves either, so you should have plenty of room to put your leathers in the boot and adjust the fit with the Velcro flap. Good luck. May 13, 2014

Phil W: I've worn these with jeans over the boot, and with leathers tucked inside. There is both a long zipper and a velcro flap that is fully adjustable. It starts at about the heel and goes all the way to the top. This is a much improved boot over the older version. Hope this comment helps. May 13, 2014

Ernesto R: I use these boots for trackdays with my A Stars Carver suit and they fit comfortably over my leathers. Just always make sure you have the legs of your leathers up where they are supposed to be (kneecups over your knees) before you try to zip up the boots. Oct 24, 2014
Reply to Ernesto Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
joe h: I wear these with an Alpinestars Race Suit and the legs tuck perfectly in these boots. Also I have worn these with jeans as well. I have no problem pull jeans over the top of S-MX5. Great boot all around! May 12, 2014

Jason H: I have worn them with full leathers and with jeans and they work well with both applications. Plenty of room for leathers to be tucked inside and a very comfortable boot. May 12, 2014

Michael M: I wear mine with jeans and sometimes dress slacks over the outside. The boots also provide enough adjustment room to wear my leathers inside the boot. May 12, 2014

david s: Yes. They are made to fit over leathers. I wear them everyday over my jeans and my Dianese knee/shin guards and there is still lots of room. May 12, 2014

Jesse G asked: I was able to try this on in a store, I normally wear 11-11.5 US shoes. I am between a 45 and 46 in these and am looking for advice. The 45 is almost perfect but alittle tight in the big toe of my larger foot. Any idea if the leather in the toe areas stretch much? The 46 felt alittle too loose. Dec 16, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Luis R: I would suggest to go with the 45 even if its a bit more snug on the toe because at the tip of the boot the material around is not that flexible which is good to protect the feet and once you walk around you don't want it to fit loose, so if you can handle the 45 for a couple of hours you should be fine Dec 16, 2013

steven b: Well if you're wearing the boots every day, Then they may stretch a little bit. I have some boots that I hardly ever wear and they are extremely snug. So it depends on how much you're gonna wear them. Dec 17, 2013

A shopper asked: So, I tried on a 48 in an SMX-2, and it felt nice, would maybe need a 49 but it's close. I know I want a taller boot such as the SMX-5. Wondering if these run more narrow than the SMX-2's?, as that may be a problem even in a 50. No one carries 50's around here, and even though I'm going to order from Rev, I want to avoid as much of the exchange game as possible. Looking for a nice, all around protective sport touring boot. Thanks again! Oct 25, 2013

Michael P: I wear a US 8 regular shoe (converts to Euro 42, by the Astars sizing chart) and I have a pair of SMX-5s in Euro 42. They fit just great and are typical high quality Alpinestars. From my own experience they are sized spot on. Oct 30, 2013

Gary H: Can't answer about size you are interested in, however they do run wider than the Sidi line. The boot is well constructed, good protection, good sport touring boot. Comfortable to walk in... Oct 29, 2013

A shopper asked: how can I clean the white boots? Jan 6, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
RevZilla: We would recommend using a specific leather cleaning solution, or a mild soap or detergent. We also recommend to treat the boots with a protective sealer/conditioner after cleaning them. Leather specialists generally carry this kind of leather protection products. Jan 7, 2013

A shopper asked: i was hoping to get some replacement SMX-R's, how do these compare? or do i need to look at other brands for a replacement? Nov 21, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
AliB: I will second the answer given already, and if you're looking for the best replacement for the SMX-R, I suggest the SMX-Plus as well, especially for race or track use. Some of the main differences is the calf support / adjustment strap and the additional support at the heel over the SMX-5 boots. Dec 5, 2011

Vedel: Get the 2011 SMX-Plus. If you like the SMX-R you are looking for a track-day/racing boot. If the SMX-Plus is good enough for Noriyuki Haga to race in, you'll be happy. Nov 22, 2011

A shopper asked: I wear a size 11.5 to 12 somewhat on the wide side shoe. Would the size 47 be the best size For the Alpinestar S-MX 5 boot? Jun 15, 2011

Stevan P: Alpinestars does tend to run a bit narrow so I would probably go with the larger size to compensate for the required width needs. You might also check out Sidi Megas or TCX boots as a wider fitting option. Jun 17, 2011
