Alpinestars S-MX 5 Boot

The S-MX 5 has been created as a performance road and track boot, incorporating the latest technical footwear design and material know-how. Following on from the other performance boots in the Alpinestars range, the S-MX 5 is notable for its comfort, hugging fit, safety performance and ease of adjustability.

Features:

  • Durable, high-tech micro-fiber upper construction offering a high level of flexibility
  • Double injected PU shields the shin, ankle, calf, toe and heel from impact while minimizing abrasion
  • Inner protection is given by a double injected panel connected to the heel counter, hidden beneath the outer shell and running up the outer ankle
  • Quick drying polyamide lining is laminated with open cell foam and high density contoured padding to absorb shocks to the foot area
  • The S-MX 5 boot is CE certified

Great boot but runs large These are great boots, but they run a full size too large on me. I usually wear 9.5 US size, but they feel like 10.5. I've already tossed everything the boots shipped with and ridden with them once to try them out, so I'm stuck with them. Lesson learned! April 23, 2013

Good boot for the price Good boot for the price. The fit is great. Basic size adjustment but if you're average size you won't have any problems. My only hang up with these boots is that they have a Velcro flap on the inseam of the boot that gets snagged on my sport bike plastics and controls when I'm swinging from side to side through heavy corner sections. The boots break in nice and clean without any blisters or heavy pressure points. April 8, 2013
Great boots These boots provide great comfort, grip, and control. I have had these boots for about 10,000 miles. They are very comfortable whether you are riding or walking. This is my second pair of Alpinestar boots. My first pair were S-MX4s. (the predecessor to these boots) After wearing them for 6 years (about 30,000 miles), including a lot of walking in them (I'm an MSF instructor) I had worn the soles pretty thin so I bought these S-MX5 boots. If they can last this long they are definitely a good value as well as being a very high quality boot. March 19, 2013
These rule!!! These cover fit and function to absolute perfection. I'm going to order the magnesium toe sliders once I get my new tires and hit it. I've had them for about a month, probably around 1000 miles on them. I wear them when I commute to work and I do wonder about the bottom tread life as I've already noticed a little wear. Depending on the shoes I wear from 10.5 to 11.5 USA. Skate shoes I wear 11.5, Converse 10.5 and a normal shoe I wear 11's. I ordered the Eur 45 size, which is the US 10.5 and they fit amazing. My feet are pretty wide too. I'll also mention I was curious how responsive these would be when shifting, braking etc. After my trial runs I was amazed at the feel I had through my controls. Great as the 1st boot This is my 1st boot I purchased and after reading all the reviews, they are just as good as advertised. Good amount of protection (in my mind you can never have too much) solid build, can be used for walking. Took a bit of time to break in, which is normal of any boot, but after that, they fit like slippers. Sizing is a bit whacky. I usually wear 9.5-10 runners, but size 8 fit me perfectly. Nice and tight. I purchased non perf model, so I did not expect too much airflow, and that is exactly what I got. Just enough flow to keep me cool, but dry. February 20, 2013
Love these boots... I would definitely recommend these boots. Very comfortable and durable and yet good enough to take to the tracks. Before buying these boots, Revzilla recommended to get a size smaller because Alpinestars' sizing is slightly off. I took their advice and it fit's perfect. I bought the flourescent yellow/white/red/black and I love it. I would definitely buy another pair after these. January 10, 2013
Great riding and entry level track boot I ordered a 45 EUR size. Typically wear a 10.5 or 11 and these fit perfect. I have a narrower B width foot and this boot couldn't fit any better. Great style and quality. Looks like it offers moderate protection for the price. Still breaking them in but looks like it will be Astars for me for all my gear from now on. January 6, 2013

Answer: 
We would recommend using a specific leather cleaning solution, or a mild soap or detergent. We also recommend to treat the boots with a protective sealer/conditioner after cleaning them. Leather specialists generally carry this kind of leather protection products.

Answer: 
I will second the answer given already, and if you're looking for the best replacement for the SMX-R, I suggest the SMX-Plus as well, especially for race or track use. Some of the main differences is the calf support / adjustment strap and the additional support at the heel over the SMX-5 boots.

Get the 2011 SMX-Plus. If you like the SMX-R you are looking for a track-day/racing boot. If the SMX-Plus is good enough for Noriyuki Haga to race in, you'll be happy.

Alpinestars does tend to run a bit narrow so I would probably go with the larger size to compensate for the required width needs. You might also check out Sidi Megas or TCX boots as a wider fitting option.
