Speed and Strength SS2200 Spin Doctor Helmet 4.4 5 67 67
Meh Aloha mai kakou. Hello everyone. For years now, I've owned the Spin Doctor S2000 and enjoyed it for incredible rides across my home in Hawai'i nei. Now that I'm shopping for a new helmet , I thought I would share my experiences with the S2000 for the benefit of my fellow two-wheel enthusiasts. THE GOOD: If you're looking for style - which you probably are since you clicked on this helmet - look no further; I purchased the matte black version with the dark smoke shield and it's as sexy in person as it looks online. I've legitimately turned heads from college girls saying they love my helmet (for realsies), to little children backing away in fear, and everything else in between. The S2000 is also great for all weather riding. Hawai'i has just about every conceivable weather condition: rain, vog (volcanic smog), humidity, high winds, snow (on Big Island), and Asians... k, that last one isn't a weather condition but they def have to be accounted for on the road. Anyway, my point is that, I've never gotten wet inside the helmet or needed to fuss with it due to weather. Finally, perhaps the most compelling reason for buying the S2000 is the field of vision; I've had many rides where I simply forgot I was wearing a helmet because of the panoramic view. THE BAD: However, just when you begin to forget you're wearing a helmet from the view, you're immediately reminded from the noise. This helmet is loud. Very loud. And anything above 30MPH invites an omnipresent 'whooshing' that dominates the inside of your helmet. On the upside, I have not experienced whistling, which I hear other cyclists complain about with their helmets. Something else, which I should have anticipated in hindsight, is the fogging. Your nostrils are essentially spooning the face shield so, until you're up to speed, the entire lower half of the shield becomes foggy from breathing - absolutely horrific at stoplights or in traffic. I've found that this can be remedied by cracking the shield open, however, this immediately invites air to attack your eyeballs - a major design flaw with the S2000. Because of this, I tend to perform a stop-and-go dance at every intersection: I crack my shield open to prevent the fogging, BUT, I have to immediately close the shield again, while accelerating, to prevent myself from being blinded by the wind. Even in mild traffic, this gets old. Fast. And, more importantly, requires me to let go of a handlebar, while accelerating, during the tumultuous time of intersections & traffic lights. Dangerous with a capital "D" (you heard me ladies). Finally, if I'm honest. the airflow isn't much to speak of. It's not horrible; I've never needed to take a break from riding because the helmet was too hot. But, it leaves a lot to be desired. THE NEUTRAL: Aside from these, I am a fan of the ratcheting chin strap. Much to my wife's dismay, I've never been too nimble with my fingers, so I appreciate the straightforward simplicity and convenience of clicking & un-clicking my helmet. Otherwise, the helmet is moderate on weight; it's not light but, it's definitely not heavy. I have needed to take it off *occasionally* to give my neck a neck break. But, this was also while riding my sport bike during a 3 hour journey. The issue is dramatically less pronounced on my cruiser. I've also listed the removable chin bar here, as neutral, because it's not that cool after day 3; I messed around with it a couple times to feel like I got my money's worth but, realistically, I've never ridden without it. The flip-down visor is also here for similar reasons too; it's convenient, and provides the flexibility of never NEEDING a darker face shield. But, since this is a full face helmet, I end up using a darker shield for style reasons. Otherwise, the bottom half of my face sticks out below the visor awkwardly, which people can see using the clear shield - not unlike a glass vase for plumber's crack. Finally, on a side note, I do not recommend the matte black version - as with all matte paint, it scuffs & scratches easily. After 6 months, it's dinged enough that you look like you have the motor skills of a 2 year old (forgive the pun). THE CONCLUSION: My review of the downsides may be compelling to avoid the S2000 but, I would challenge you to keep a few things in mind. This is a sub $200 helmet. Yes, there is room for improvement but, all things considered, it's a great bang for your buck: flip down visor, panoramic views, removable chin bar, Bluetooth considerations, sexiness, and so on. There is no question that this is a value-packed helmet. If I were to repeat history, I would definitely buy this helmet again... just, not for myself. Maybe for the wife or kids to ride along with, or something fun to try as a beginning rider. Otherwise, I'm headed to Shark or Icon for my next helmet. I hear the Airframe Pro is pretty boss. Mahalos for the read! March 3, 2016
great helmet I am closer to an intermediate oval. The helmet is a little more round and squeezes on my forehead, but wears in over time. You will want to go up one size. The wind noise is just as loud as riding in my skid lid. September 10, 2015
great visibility This helmet was purchased due to the large field of view it afforded. I am very pleased with the visibility from this helmet. I do have a couple minor complaints though This helmet seems to run a touch large for the sizing. I purchased a medium since my head measurement put me in that range, but on the low end of the medium range. I ended up needing a small instead. I purchased a liner and cheek pads for a small and swapped them out for the guts of the medium. Fits much better now. At least for the bikes I have, this is not a highway helmet. With the chin bar removed the buffeting on the highway is quite uncomfortable. Uncomfortable to a point that I wont run this helmet on the highway without the chin bar. With the chin bar installed it is a lot better, but still buffets a little. It is tolerable though. This may just be a result of the airflow characteristics of my bikes though. Overall I am pleased with the helmet. September 7, 2015
Awsome helmet I highly recommend this product to others the website was helpful July 20, 2015
You can't beat the price. Really good product for the price you pay, I ordered mine in black and ordered a tinted shield to go with it so that it would end up looking like the picture. I wanted something stylish with a wide view similar to an open face helmet but I wanted something tinted covering my face because I wear glasses. This helmet was just the perfect product for what I was looking for. The removable chin bar gives it the open face feeling while still having a full face shield, It is very loud like the other reviews have noted. I recommend a tinted shield if that is something your interested in. I can still see great at night and the tint is very relaxing in the bright unrelenting sun in Texas. August 28, 2015
fit and looks great loud wind noise, lenses rattle, good for warm temps, not for cold. July 13, 2015
Pretty Solid For the quality and price, I'd say it's a keeper. Definitely worth a consideration. July 9, 2015
Cool! The helmet is just as displayed. The wide view is awesome, you can look all around without moving your whole head. Although it weights the same as my previous helmet, the weight feels different, better balanced; head does not feel heavy. The helmet has a small fit, but it's comfortable, it becomes an extension of the head. Fitting a smoked faceshield makes this helmet look like it's from Tron or something! June 22, 2015
