Shark Race-R Pro Randy De Puniet Replica Helmet

The new, high-end SHARK Race-R Pro is constructed from carbon/aramid fibers, was initially developed for Shark's top level racers: Moto GP, WSBK, Moto 2…. Can you imagine the level of requirement these riders have? Shark therefore had to ensure top level performance, giving the utmost importance to functionality and ergonomics: lightness, stability, comfort, precision and aerodynamics. Because the requirement from top racers is two-fold: safety and leading-edge technology. Shark must protect in critical situations, and must also contribute to their riding performance. The Shark Race-R Pro gives you the same level of excellence as it does to elite riders.

Shark's mantra is simple, "Just race! We care about the rest."

The Race Pro-R is Shark's new high end composite fiber helmet. Totally designed through a reverse engineering process, the Race-R Pro has been developed from technical data as close as possible from human head specifications. Shark has therefore taken into account your own constraints before considering its own. From the very first track tests, riders have acknowledged its stability, even above 300 km/h, its comfort and the precision of the wide angle vision field as well as its optical distortion-free shield.

"The Race R PRO concentrates all what I am looking for in a helmet when riding my bike. In fact, it contributes to my riding performance." Randy de Puniet, June 22nd, 2012.

Thanks to wind tunnel testing, Shark has minimized unpleasant cyclonic airflows on the Race R Pro by adding a double blade spoiler. Result = Stability. The Race R Pro ventilation system is a synthesis of the most efficient ventilation:

  • 4 air scoops: chin (with integrated anti-pollution air filter) + front + 2 top vents
  • 7 extractors
  • 3 possible positions: closed, intermediate, fully open
  • Optimization of venturi effect thanks to Formula1 wind tunnel testing

Spectacular Helmet! It took a while for this graphic to be released, but now it's here! The Shark Race R Pro itself is not a new helmet, but they have made some updates since it's release. A few things to note, this helmet was used only on the track, so the review is specific to track use only. My previous helmet was a Shoei RF1100 that was overdue for replacement and the new Shoeis did not seem to fit me well (RF1200 or the X14). Arai was the next logical choice, but the Arais were becoming common. So I started to consider AGV, Nolan/X-Lite, Shark - and admittedly being a Lorenzo (no haters!), the Shark Race R Pro was it. - I was a size small in most brands, and a small in Shark fit me perfectly as well. It's a little tight putting on and taking off, but once it's on your head, if feels fantastic. - The materials used feel plush/premium. I thought it felt much better than Shoei, that's for sure. - The helmet is made in Thailand (despite Shark being a French brand). Not a big deal, but something you may want to know. - The DOT markings on the back were an afterthought for US/CA markets. The DOT markings cover a bit of the Eurasian Bank graphic, not a big deal, but something you may want to know. - I had purchased a Dark Smoke shield to go with the helmet. The Shark "dark smoke" is quite a bit darker than the shields that Shoei/Arai would consider "dark smoke". Keep this in mind as I had to get used to this. - Upward vision from a tuck position is so much better than my previous helmet. In conclusion, very happy with this lid. It's exactly what I was looking for in a premium race helmet. Definitely an equal alternative to a Shoei or an Arai. August 1, 2016
Helmet is AMAZING! Better than Arai! First of all, this is a very serious helmet. Just upon pulling it out of the box, you get the idea that serious attention to detail has been paid in full. I've owned two Arai's, and I thought they were the best of the best... Until I got this Race R Pro! I didn't know that this kind of quality existed until this came in the mail. Two best things for me are: 1. Vision. They aren't joking when they say class one optics. Putting the Arai back on felt like squint 'O vision compared to this Shark. 2. Stability while riding. There is no turbulence. It cuts through the air like a knife. No turbulence, combined with how quiet it is, made me feel as though I had a new bike! It makes the experience of motorcycling that much more enjoyable. The helmet flows a lot of air... a lot. I am 58cm, which should put me in the almost too big for a medium. I ordered a size medium from another vendor. It was too big, and after talking with Revzilla, it was clear that I should have bought from them first. I ordered a small and it fits great. Seriously, the other guys are just order takers. The guys at Revzilla ride bikes too. By the way, the shield operation is sooo smooth. It's thick too. Feels great. Not sure how Arai is getting so much money for their helmets. This Shark is a great value! July 23, 2016
Top 2 Helmets I've ever owned So let me begin by saying I'm no rookie when it comes to super premium helmets. I've own an AGV Pista, Arai Corsair V, and Shoei X-12. I have primarily been wearing the AGV Pista but was looking for something versatile enough for cooler riding (the AGV Pista has removable plugs for vents not actual closing/opening vents). I've had Sharks in the past and they have always been very comfortable. The Race-R pro is no different. Super premium, yes slightly bulkier than the ever tiny AGV Pista, but that really does not bother me. The vision is amazing and of course the shield is in my opinion the best in the industry in terms of thickness and overall feel. The shield as I mentioned is sturdy, and the quick change mechanism is pretty stellar. You may have to change the tension on those posts initially, but that's about it. No distortion, and fog free and scratch resistant. I will have to say that the one thing people may complain about is the magnetic D-ring strap. yes it is a little flimsy but 90% of the time you will have to issue with it. I do wish the magnet was a bit stronger but heck, I don't see it as a deal breaker. My first ride it came loose a couple times but once got more familiar with it, it was completely fine. I will say that if you've noticed the Moto GP riders wearing the Race-R Pro, none of them have a magnetic D-Ring strap (they have the traditional button). That being said it's a nice effort to make a standard item more practical. They'll get it right next go round. In terms of noise which most people very much take into consideration when buying a helmet, I will say it is probably the quietest helmet I've ever worn. I will put it to you this way. My first ride with it, I accidentally forgot my ear plus. I kept saying to myself man this thing is loud, how could this be. Turns out that without ear plugs, this bad boy is about as loud as an Arai Corsair V with ear plugs lol. I think that says it all. Wear earplugs and this thing will be stone quiet. Stability wise, his thing down't really move and mind you I'm riding on a bike with no windscreen/fairing protection. I would recommend it to anyone especially when you take advantage of the closeout as I did. One of the best helmets in the world at a great price. Can't go wrong. July 14, 2016
Great Helmet Great, comfortable and durable helmet. Everything is great, the airflow, the design, comfort. Only real downside is the strap magnet being very weak, it comes comes loose on every ride, might have as well skipped that part when designing the helmet. June 24, 2016
Shield mechanism I'll start out by saying I've owned three Shark helmets before buying this one. And the "new" shield mechanism is stupid compared to the earlier versions. The reason I don't buy another high end brand anymore and went to Shark was due to the simplistic shield change design. It was an easy one button system. Now it apparently was backward engineered. My first year MechE students can do a better job. The helmet is nice with nice glasses feature. Fit is snug. Like most Shark helmets, it's not quiet. It is light and gives decent visibility. Best Helmet I've Had Been though Shoei, Bell, and Arai, and this helmet is by far the best one I have had. Fits to size, which I know ZLA wanted to confirm, I got this helmet on a Friday, and went to the track with it the next day. Quiet, light, fit snug just like described. Considering I got the helmet on a closeout, it is definitely the best purchase I've made from ZLA in a while. A definite recommend-to-buy for this one if you are in the market for a solid and light helmet. September 1, 2015
The Quality of this helmet is awesome I have had Shoei helmets for 20+ years and love them. When they went to the 1200 they no longer fit my head shape and I needed to find different. I went through about every brand there is. Either the fit was off, or the quality wasn't where I wanted it to be. The Shark Race R Pro is the exception. The fit is good, and the quality is excellent. The best way I can describe the fit, is that if you have/had a Shoei RF-1000 and love it, the Shark will work for you. It will take some getting used to putting on with the neck roll, but the shape is almost a mirror image of the 1000. Quality wise, this helmet blows the rest away. The liner and cheek pads are the equal to Shoei IMO. Super plush. The paint fit/finish is awesome. Great looking helmet without being colors that will look tacky in a year or two. This helmet with all the vents open is not what I call quiet, but it is no louder than my RF-1000 was. Its a non issue. If you are buying this helmet you are probably more interested in the vents than any wind noise. Also, if you wear glasses, the cheek pads are perfect. even without removing the small piece of foam, mine slid right in. So far, only 2 negatives. The magnet that holds the loose strap end is useless. It comes loose in a few miles. Bell has that one won, but as I have never secured the loose end before its not an important item to me. The other is that I wish the shield had detents in it, but you can adjust the friction so it stays up if you need it too. The guys at Revzilla were a pleasure to deal with on this with info and no problem with sending back helmets that I didn't like. They spent a TON of time with me giving me information to make sure I got a helmet that had what I wanted and that fit. August 5, 2015
All Objectives Met My first new helmet in years. I wanted safety and protection first, then style. What I got was a secure fit, great ventilation, a terrific 'optically correct' face shield and I love the fact that the helmet was built to accommodate wearing glasses. Then there is the style...incredibly sharp! June 16, 2014
