Nolan N86 Helmet

The Nolan N86 is the new full-face helmet by Nolan characterized by its sporty, streamlined designed, compact volume, extensive standard equipment and close-fit comfort. The N86 is equipped with an inner sun visor (VPS), Pinlock anti-fog visor with silicone-sealed profile, removable/washable inner comfort padding, Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system. This system consists of a thermoplastic ergonomic opening lever, and a second aluminum toothed and holding lever. The toothed lever releases the micrometric strip, thus the chin strap can only be open with a very broad rotation of the opening lever. This device minimizes the possibility of unintentional opening of the retention system.

Features:

  • Polycarbonate shell
  • VPS (Vision Protection System) short dark shield mounted on the inside of the shell provides real eye protection when used independently from the clear shield
  • Quick-release and multi-position anti-scratch shield accepts Pinlock antifog insert (included)
  • Clear Pinlock faceshield and lens included
  • Adjustable chin and top vents plus air flow rear extraction
  • Removable and washable Clima Comfort interior lining and cheekpads with antibacterial treatment
  • Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system
  • Ready for NCOM Communication System
  • DOT Approved

First helmet This was my first helmet which I received in July of 2014, now being mid October I've had awhile to use the helmet and break it in. At first I thought a medium would be to small of a fit after It was tight to my head for the first couple weeks but now it's very comfortable and I have no problems with it. As for the sound being on a motorcycle and going 70+ mph on freeways and such I find the helmet does a decent job with sound control, I don't get bothered too much by it. The helmet does give my neck a slight pain if I haven't rode for a week or two because of the wind resistance but once I keep up with it there is no bother there either. It's a great helmet for the price you pay and it looks good as well! October 20, 2014
Great Helmet I've owned this helmet for about a month now. I couldn't find it locally to try on and was very pleased that it fit me well. I bought a large and my old helmet is an Arai Quantum in large. Construction seems solid so far. I was in the market for a helmet with a flip down sun visor, partly for the UV / sunglasses aspect but more so I was in the habit of riding with the visor up to get more ventilation and sometimes a bug would almost smack me in the eye. Now my eyes are protected as well. Awesome helmet considering the price! October 20, 2014
Sweet Helmet, nice features Totally a bang for the buck kinda deal. I was planning on going the Shoei route, but wanted to save some cash in the short run (will probably invest in a nicer helmet once I've spent some time with this one. Only complaint I have is that the internal sun visor doesnt come down very far...but it DOES help in the sense that it allows an unobstructed view of the gauges when riding. Other than that, it's a little big, as in bulky...but whatever, when there's only my helmet between my brain and the asphalt, I'll take a little more bulk! September 29, 2014
Fantastic helmet for the money with some possible glaring dealbreakers I bought this helmet to upgrade from my Scorpion 410. I didn't want to switch visors everyday, I wanted something that was Red/White/Black, and a stock pinlock. This helmet fit the bill for all of that and is a fantastic value. It falls short for me in a few areas: 1. The venting. The venting is not good. The way the visor locks up is exceptional though to provide a good crack with a lot of airflow but that's not really venting. 2. Noisy. Even with earplugs in you feel like the wind is just slamming you at speeds over 60. 3. Shell size. I bought a medium and the shell is HUGE. I feel like a bobblehead when I wear this helmet and I think the size has a bit to do with why it's so noisy. If I could I would return it but it's been too long at this point. If I would have bought it at it's current price I would have no complaints but at the full retail price I was expecting a bit more. September 24, 2014
Another great helmet I have had the N-84, and the N-85, now the N-86. I am a big fan of this series of helmets. It seems each time this helmet is updated, Nolan improves it. This time I only have one thing to say that isn't perfect (for me). The tinted visor that comes down inside, doesn't seem to come as far down as it should. This is a minor inconvenience. Other than that, this helmet is very comfortable, the ratchet style buckle is awesome, it is light, the padding is made to be changed to accommodate eyeglasses and other minor changes, and the pinlock is the best way to keep the face-shield from fogging. Over all a great helmet, at a great price. September 8, 2014
Good value helmet I m using it for 3-4 months. my ex helmet was LS2 FF396 so i can compare with it. its heavier than LS2 but still its ok. It fits ok. materials are quality enough for a below 200 dolar helmet. sun visor works well but could be more longer. If u dont have enough money for arai or shoei i recommend this one to u. Good visibiliy. Good helmet overall, use it for my daily commute to and from work. Excellent airflow so it keeps me cool, yet the wind noise is very loud, have to use ear plugs. Sun visor is a great feature makes driving in direct sunlight comfortable. August 2, 2014
Great Helmet but Somehow Worse than the N-85 Some scumbag stole my N-85 off my bike so I replaced it with this model. KEEP A DEATH GRIP ON YOUR GEAR, MY FELLOW BIKERS! I feel like I've used this helmet long enough (five or six months) to have a solid opinion of it. I got it in the tail end of winter and I can say, now that we are in peak summer months, that the ventilation on this thing is nonexistent. I often don't realize if I have my vents open or closed because it literally makes NO difference. If I need some air, I pop the lip open an inch. The ventilation on the N-85 was far superior (in the sense that at least it worked). At least I know this thing will be warm in the winter! As for the rest of the helmet, the fit seems to be exactly the same as the N-85, but the outside shell has a slightly different (uglier to me, personally) shape than the N-85 did. Other people have mentioned that the shade lens comes down to an awkward level which affects your vision. I agree with this, but I'd say it's not that bad and you get used to it. But really, they could have designed it to be one inch taller and it would be perfect. The lid seals very tightly and I can feel no air get in. I can only feel air get in under my chin and the sides of my jaw if I flex my jaw muscles a certain way. Nit-picking details: The top vents (or bug catchers, as I call em) are a pain to clean and since they provide no ventilation anyway, I wish they were retractable or simply not there. The mesh chin... thing. It doesn't do much. It's mesh, so it's not very warm in the winter and I don't see any benefit for using it in the summer except to catch my gum if I accidentally spit it out? The safety strap is a little uncomfortable. I wish it was just a couple more centimeters away from my throat, or had better padding for comfort. When I removed the padding out for cleaning, it seems like it doesn't fit back in quite right. The right-hand side pad just kinds slips in and out and doesn't clip in like the other side does (see picture). In fairness, it's probably my fault, but I just can't seem to get it to fit right. Overall: Great helmet for the money, but not as good as the previous model, N-85. I'd recommend this to anybody looking in the ~$200 range. July 30, 2014

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
James W: Had a Nolan N102 for years, was hoping to buy another Nolan as my Cardo System integrates so well with my 102. Unfortunately Nolan has gone in a different direction with their head designs and it fit me.... meh. Created a pressure point that my RPHA10 doesn't have. Disappointed it didn't work as the quality was surprising for the price point. I absolutely would have kept it. Oct 2, 2014
David P: (1) Previous experience with Nolan was positive; this new helmet replaces what is now a very old
N40 / HondaLine unit. (2) In particular, the N86 was selected based on online reviews and limited examination of related
Nolan products (N90) in a local motorcycle accessories store. Primary requirements for me were: conservative styling,
good user reviews, value for the dollar, and useful features.

J A: I was looking for a good helmet in the 200-250 range. After watching a good amount of reviews on this website it made it easy for me to decide. Videos on this website are what sold me, very visual and good descriptions on almost every helmet I viewed. Apr 2, 2014
Christine T: I am replacing my current helmet, as the eps has, technically, come to the end of its useful life. The reviews on the Revzilla website, and WebBike World website, are positive. Also, the fact that the place of origin can be visited, and confidence in workplace standards is high. Apr 2, 2014
Timothy I: I chose this helmet because it's the successor to WebBikeWorld's helmet of the year, the N85, and this model is more of an American shape, slightly less round, and the ratchet micro lock (For the LOVE OF GOD why can't ALL helmets have this), the internal sun visor, and of course ... The bang for the buck! Can't wait to test it out!!! Mar 19, 2014
Pete M: I chose this based on features. For the price, I simply couldn't find another helmet that had all the bells and whistles this one does. Mar 13, 2014

A shopper asked: what are the differences between the n85 and n86? Aug 10, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (6) No (0)
Eduardo M: I have both.
Face shield and internal visor are the same (can use my tinted N85 shield with the N86).
Vents are bigger and look more aggressive, but didn't notice much difference while riding.
Fit, quality and finish seem the same.
N86 interior has a nice red/gray combination.
The new microlock seems sturdier.
N86 is a little lighter.
Both are great helmets, I'm extremely happy with them.

Gregory B asked: I am wondering how this helmet fits (internal shape) compared to the N85. Can anyone make a comparison of this helmet to the AGV AX8 or the AGV Skyline? I definitely have an oval shaped head. Thanks Oct 13, 2013

A shopper asked: Does the N86 have the chin "curtain" that helps keep wind off your neck? Apr 9, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Timothy I: It does have a little chin curtain/screen... And it helps a little, but not a whole lot.

I have to say though... This is the best bang for the buck on any helmet I've every had. ;)

Sam S: Yes, it does, and it works pretty well. The bottom of my chin touches it and occasionally sticks out beneath it, but it's easy to correct with one finger once you feel the cold air. Apr 9, 2014

Jeffrey T: It does have a non removable chin curtain that keeps wind from coming up inside the front of the helmet. Apr 9, 2014
