Easy to use for the most part; excellent sound Just tried these out for a 1800 miles trip with the mrs. First use of a communicator system. I can't give a complete review, for we didn't do the recommended update/website sync that's required. Apparently this is mandatory, for the stock settings on one unit was way too low (or VOX sensitive). Thought we could do this on a public computer, but it requires a download which no one allows :-( I wonder if some of the negative reviews were from users who tried this system right out of the box. We actually ran into the West cost Scala rep for Tucker Rocky, and he insisted that the units need to be registered to properly work. But when the units synced, the sound was very good. iPhone music/sound was instant, and very good. The initial pairing on the units can sometimes take up to 30 seconds, don't know why. We also picked up some beeping, guessing it was trying to connect with other bluetooth devices in the area. Didn't impeded on conversation, just a bit odd. Hopefully we can do a better review on our next trip, once the devices are updated and properly set up. September 15, 2014
Miles with not much regrets! Unboxing the Q1 trying to find the correct pieces didn't take that long and right the first time. Pairing it with the handphone & GPS is very easy. Initially the speakers produces noises while playing the mp3 from the phone via Bluetooth but it proved to work well the next day. I really like how simple it is do everything on this device especially randomly tuning the saved channels as when I like (#LIKEABOSS). December 14, 2013
like the volume control easy to use Took time to get used to, helmet speaker placement helped after getting correct ear placement, love the radio. Works good if you don't have a radio on bike. December 10, 2013
Great for couples I bought this so my wife and I can chat while she's on the back of the bike with me. It works as advertised. It's not perfect, but it works better than some other similar products we tried. When riding solo I can also make and receive calls and that is cool. We use them on HJC helmets that were designed for use with another product, but these are far better. August 5, 2013
High Quality Product Things I love: 1) The deciding factor for my purchase was that you could use your ear buds in lieu of the provided speakers. However, I found that if I use the speakers and put ear plugs in also, the ambient noise goes away and the music sound transmits quite nice. So thus far haven't tried the earbud option because the speakers give good sound. 2) Instead of the boom mic, I utilized the wired mic. Those people I have spoken with through my bluetooth linked phone say the sound is great and they had no problems hearing me, even though I was going down the highway. I'm utilizing a full face helmet and recommend this option. 3) The unit disconnects and comes off the helmet very easily so that you can charge it without having to drag the helmet around too. 4) Bluetooth linkage was quite easy for a first time user. I linked both my phone and GPS into the unit. For music, I utilized my Sony Walkman (which doesn't have bluetooth) via the wired connection and this worked nice. Another reason why the ease of disconnecting the unit from the helmet is a plus. 5) The FM radio is a plus. 6) Packaging - The quality of just the box and packaging demonstrates that you have purchased a high quality product. I can use this packaging now for a storage container and it isn't just a cardboard box, but rather a container designed for shelf storage. Things I think could improve: a) Controls are easy, but you do have to memorize some button sequences. I can perform all control functions with a glove, but it took me a while to memorize the button sequences needed say to turn on the radio. June 17, 2013
Great bang for the buck. Far far superior to past products. Sound quality from stock speakers has increased dramatically. The feature to plug in separate speakers (ear buds) is greatly appreciated. May 28, 2013

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
T I: I had an old Cardo team set and was always happy with it. Considered the Sena, but this seems more compact and I'm old fashioned and like to stick with something I know a little about. Jul 12, 2014
Stan S: We have previously owned Cardo products and have been very satisfied with them. Apr 20, 2014
Rex R: Wanted to be able to communicate with my passenger, make calls, and listen to music. This fit the bill, got good reviews, and didnt break the bank. Revzilla made it even better by price matching a competitor. Feb 27, 2014
Ron C: decided on this for the "bang for the buck" aspect-especially the ability to plug in my ear buds if I want, and the included FM radio- my wife and I plan on trying them out on our next trip Jan 25, 2014
michael b: updated my 4 year old scala riders love them Jan 11, 2014
juliana l asked: Quick question to confirm feature: I read somewhere (in another product page) that only the Q3 is capable of music sharing between rider and passenger. Now I read in the product details of the Q1 that it is also capable of music sharing. So just to confirm, is the Q1 capable for music sharing or not?

Timothy E: Q1 is capable of Music Sharing. However, it is limited to only bluetooth stereo audio sources. The response won't let me link to other websites, but go to cardosystems(dot)com website (if I put the actual "dot" there, the Revzilla site doesn't allow an answer), click on Support, then highlight Manuals. At this point select "Scala Rider Family", and then find the Q1 Teamset manual. For at least the English language manual, look at Section 6.5 on Page 11. I haven't personally done much rider/passenger use for my Q1, but this feature did work for my Sony Walkman in the bluetooth mode when I checked it out. When I bought this unit, I had seriously debated the Q3, as well as the Sena Units. I ended up purchasing this unit and am thankful I did. I bought it because I could use my regular earbuds, but ended up liking the sound with the supplied speakers in the helmet and then wearing earplugs. The sounds outside the helmet are damped by the earplugs and the stereo sound comes in outstanding. So I am quite pleased with the Scala Rider and have huge recommendation of it. A great unit! But that is my preference anyway. Aug 14, 2013

David P: Juliana,
The Q1 rider set has music sharing capabilities. I've used mine while riding with my daughter. It's a nice set up. I would make sure that you sync your units on your computer and do the set up that way. It's much easier.
I hope I helped ya!

John G: Yes, although I have not tried it yet. It disables the intercom between the two, so you can have intercom (talking to each other) or share your music to the passenger, but not both at the same time. Was one of the reasons I switched to this model (love the FM as well). Aug 14, 2013

Eric E: Yes, you can share music via Bluetooth to both rider and passenger units. It is clunky switching between the music and communication. So, don't be in as hurrybto talk if uou are listening to music. Aug 14, 2013

Jonathan R: The Q1 is capable of sharing music. I just tried it for the first time earlier today, pushing music from Bluetooth connected iPhone playing on one headset to the other headset....worked great! Aug 14, 2013

Mark R: Yes, the Q3 is able to share music.

Unfortunately, the intercom function is as difficult to use/setup as the other Cardo units.

Troy H: Our Q1 Teamset shares music between us just fine. You'll have to click the intercom button again to resume talking, but it works great. Aug 14, 2013
Reply to Troy Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Daniel M: It does support it. You do have to do a bit of prep, but once its setup you just hold the volume + button and it shares the bluetooth music. Very simple and sleek. Aug 14, 2013

A shopper asked: So lets say my passenger and I are sharing music via one of our phones bluetooth. If one of us talks does our voice go over the music or does it cut out the music? I guess im asking if we are listening to music is it still easy to hear communication between rider/passenger? Apr 3, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Malte S: The music pauses once you start speaking. Music comes back on once the conversation is done. Works nicely. Sharing music works by sending the music from one Scala to the other - easy one button trick. Slightly annoying is that once you have finished the conversation, you need to push a button to re-share the music source. At least that is how my setup works. Apr 3, 2014
Reply to Malte Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Ron C: i would say based on my understanding of the owners manual plus my experience with listening to the radio and talking that the answer is no.

The music cuts out out and unit to unit communications takes over.

There is a priority list and I forget the running order off hand, but it basically only does one thing at a time.

Francine S: The music stops whenever you talk. Same as if you are listening to the radio. There is a slight delay Apr 5, 2014

A shopper asked: Hi. Just to make sure. The unit comes with two mics? All I want it GPS, Receive calls on my smart phone, Being able to talk to rider and the rider (wife) being able to talk to me. Am I looking at the correct device? Aug 11, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Ron C: yes, box contains 2 Pre paired units with included mics and speakers.
I mounted one unit on my wife's helmet and the other unit on my helmet.

You can blutooth connect a smartfone to receive calls and GPS info and you can listen to music from fone or included fm radio built into unit and talk back and forth between rider and passenger.....BUT, you can only do one at a time.

ie, talk with passenger, call comes in it interrupts your conversation with passenger, call ends and you go back to yackin' it up with your passenger who is starting to annoy you so you turn on the tunes thereby cutting off the chatte

we have over 5000 miles on our sets and they work great!
I highly reccomend getting these

MICHAEL L: I bought this system last year not expecting what to get and this unit blew my mind. Best $$ spent for my bike. Everything you are describing this unit does. When riding you can talk and have the gas go at the same time along with music if desired. I have made calls on it and works slick with summer gloves when it gets cold its tricky but do able. Very simple. My girlfriend rides with me and we have 2 closed helmets just make sure to get a good pair of headphones, I use Bose and seems to work perfectly. The speakers don't work only down fall. It does have a built in radio too for most ft channel's. I would buy this unit over and over again and again. So 2 mics 2 head sets 2 chargers 2 clamps. Aug 11, 2014

Robert J: These work good rider to passenger, cardo days of well work from bike to bike, But I would probably go with the other one. The q1 does work from bike to bike but only a small range. Love the radio. Dec 13, 2013

Mark R: We use them like that, as well as on one bike together.
The range, with line of sight, is good, maybe 500 ft.
They require a learning curve that can be a little frustrating,

Diego S asked: Hello, with this set, are me and my passenger able to pair each device with different smartphones ? I mean, can i pair mine with my phone and her with her phone so each one can listen to their own music ? Also, if i have it paired with my phone and receive a call, will it be shared with my passenger ? Oct 28, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Jason S: Yes they can be paired so each of you can listen to your own music from your own smart phone. We ended up working this way because in order to pair on the same music, there were a few extra button pushes that i needed to do to send the music to her helmet. Additionally her helmet needed to be in standby.....no vox.
The calls were not shared with the passenger.

michael b: yes , matched sets instantly pair up every time you power up and if necessary you simply pair off and wait 30 seconds then they re-set and pair up again .
Yes they can pair up to 8 riders within distance of each other about 200 yards clearly .

suggest you watch Anthony on revzilla demo videos on revzilla site as well

Malte S: Yes, intercoms nicely for conversations between rider and passenger. Voice activated, stops the music when you start talking. Goes back to music when the conversation is over. Same when a phone call comes in.
The Q1 is to my knowledge not designed for communication between bikes. Check the Q3 for that?

Adi H: Dear John
I don't know this helmet so I cant answer you about installing the Q1. However, I'm very happy with the Q1. I had Cardo Teamset which I bought 5 years ago, and this model is by far better,
You can send me a picture of your helmet (or a link to it) and I'll try to give you an answer about the installation.

Robert R: From the looks of the helmet (picture) I think it would mount just fine, but you need somewhere to put the speakers. Oct 16, 2013

Robert R: On second thought, this may not work on a half helmet because of the chorded microphone. Look for a solid boom mic. Oct 16, 2013

A shopper asked: I believe this product (Q1) will suit my needs perfectly. Two questions:
- This is sold in pairs. If one headset fails, or I would like to add another setup to another helmet, what are the options in purchasing just a single?
- What is the warranty? And will Cardo honor it if purchased through Revzilla?
Thanks in advance.

Jason S: I had a failure on my unit and Cardo had me ship it to them. They replaced it right away but i ate the cost of shipping it to them. I did not receive any information as to why it failed. Cardo honored the warranty and I purchased it from Revzilla. Nov 11, 2014

Malte S: If you want to use the Scala on more than one helmet, you can buy additional helmet mounts into which the transmitter clicks in. I have this on 2 motorcycle helmets and my ski helmet. No need to buy the full thing for each helmet. Nov 6, 2014

A shopper asked: Will I be able to listen to music from my smartphone while my passenger listens to music from her smartphone ? I mean, can each device pair to phones independently ? Also, if i receive a call on my phone, will it be shared with my passenger ? Oct 28, 2014

Richard A: Yes, it all duplexes very well together. I don't think we tried a conference call per se, but I believe that's possible.

Just remember to register the product when you get it, and make sure the settings are all OK. Ours came with one unit having a different VOX setting than the other, which was a pain on a week long trip. Updates require a driver on the computer, so public computers were a no go for updates.

Jeff T: I don't think it would work very well. The mike would be in the airflow and I think you would have to use ear buds as there would be no place to mount the stock speakers. Just my two cents. Have never tried it. I can say they work superbly on a full face or modular helmet. I have tried both and they are great. Oct 11, 2014
