Fit and upgrade solid I bought this back protector for what I think is the now discontinued Alpinstars Cape Town Air jacket. I was concerned that the thin foam back padding would not provide sufficient protection in case of a crash. Checking Revzilla (always a good idea!) I saw they offered an Alpinstars back protector and another from ForceField. Now, I decided to go with the Alpinstars instead of the ForceField. I have armor from the latter, but figured the Alpinstar back protector would be a better fit and upgrade for their own jacket instead of something from a 3rd party. The armor fits in the jacket nicely, provides a rated level of protection I hope never to test, and has airflow that is just fine. Been riding around with it for a while and find it does not add annoying bulk to the jacket. Would recommend over the thin foam pad that comes OEM. Good product, good fit, good protection. June 30, 2015
Great back protector Couldn't be happier with this purchase and upgrade from the foam insert the jacket came with. Greatest thing about this back protector is you get the security feeling of knowing its there without even feeling it! It's that comfortable. June 1, 2015
Bionic Air Back Protector Insert Bought this to replace the foam protector that came with my jacket, this is much more durable. Has a decent amount of weight to it. Haven't had to crash test it yet thankfully. Would recommend! June 1, 2015
Good fit for Alpine* Jacket Feels great as added protection in the air Jacket , small price to pay compare to the potential hazards!! May 4, 2015
Highly Suggested! The fitment guide is pretty true to size, using the Euro scale. I got a 52 GP A*s jacket and the large protector fits perfectly. When you pull out the standard foam pad from the jacket, you can CLEARLY see why a protector like this is beneficial. Going from a perforated 1/4" foam pad, to a honey-combed, formed plastic, engineered armor plate is a no-brainer. Cost is important to everyone, but cost should come secondary to safety. You can get more money, spinal injuries are usually a deal breaker. March 6, 2015
Good Stuff Good protection to your basic race jacket! Added to both my race jackets February 28, 2015
great fit always protect your spine ... fits all of my 3 alpinestar jackets February 25, 2015
Very nice back protector I use it with the GP Plus Jacket and it fits right in, fully compatible with most A* leather jackets. It feels durable and I feel protected. The only thing I can say is that it's a bit uncomfortable when you are standing up, I feel the lower part of it on my lower back a bit, but not too bad. It's very comfortable while riding though, and that's what matters. February 24, 2015

A shopper asked: Does this armor fit the verona air?, if yes. what size do i need on a medium jacket? Apr 15, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Chris K: This back protector, along with the standard Bio Armor protector are designed as a replacement for the RC back protector. Anything that advertises fitment with the RC Back Protector (like the Verona Air does) will also fit with the new Bio Armor protectors.

For a MD jacket you would go with a MD protector. The main difference is that the LG size is a bit taller.

Medicineman: Yes this fits the Verona Air. I have a large size Verona and went with the Large protector. It fits perfectly. If you wear a medium, I would go with the medium protector.

From what I understand, if your wear medium or smaller ( euro size 52 or less), go with the medium.
If you wear a large or bigger ( euro 54 or more), go with the large.

RevZilla: The Alpinestars Bionic Air Back Protector Insert is only about 3/4 of an inch thick. It is very light and molds to the shape of your back. While it only provides CE level 1 protection, it is an excellent choice for light riding. Mar 27, 2013

Miggs: The chest protector probably only adds about 3/4" if that. It's very comfortable and hardly noticeable once they're in properly. Mar 31, 2013

A shopper asked: Im buying a Verona WP jacket MD-Medium size. what back protector do you recommend me?
-Bio Armo
-Bionic Air
Nov 29, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
RevZilla: You have 2 choices for the Alpinestars Verona WP Jacket:

Alpinestars Bio Armor Back Protecto
Alpinestars Bionic Air Back Protector Insert
They are on par from a certification standpoint seeing as they are both CE Level 1 back protectors. The Bionic Air will ventilate better than the Bio Armor and be slightly more comfortable in our opinion.

Miggs: Bionic is a better choice for air flow and overall quality. You get what you pay for. Both are CE rated, so protection levels are similar. Mar 31, 2013

AliB: The Alpinestars Bionic Air Back Protector in size medium will work in this jacket. In addition, the Alpinestars RC Back Protector in size Medium will also work and is closer to the actual shape of the protector pocket in the Alpinestars Indy jacket. Both the Bionic Air and the RC are CE Level 1 rated. Oct 20, 2011

A shopper asked: Can someone who has this protector with the new GP-Plus jacket confirm the fit? According to A-Stars, this protector is only for the GP-Pro and up. Apparently the pocket in the GP-Plus is too large and only the RC protector will properly fit. Thanks. May 12, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
pawedge: I put a large in my GP-Plus size US-44 / E-54 and it fits... actually tight but fits. Anything smaller go with a Medium, anything US-44 and larger go with the Large. It's great! I can't even tell it's in the jacket but after pulling out the flimsy piece of foam that comes with the jacket I know it's a huge improvement. I don't think the pocket is "Too large" on my GP-Plus. The protector stays in place and doesn't shift. It fits snug on the top and bottom of the pocket and has 1-2" of space left/right. I hope this helps. Ride safe. Jun 4, 2012
Reply to pawedge Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Chris K: We have not yet found an Alpinestars jacket with back protector pocket that doesn't accept either this protector or the standard Bio-Armor. It is designed as a direct replacement to the RC back protector, so you shouldn't have any trouble. May 16, 2011

A S asked: What is the difference between the bionic air back protector and the nucleon kr 1i?
Do they both fit in the gp r?
Mar 20, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Juan G: I don't know. I'm guessing the nucleon is "new-er" product. I purchased my GP-R jacket and bionic air back protector in May 2013... and the bionic was the recommended choice at the time. I think there was a cheaper back protector... but I went with the bionic back protector and I also got the 2 bionic chest protectors. You don't really notice the back protector... but sometimes the chest protectors feel a little snug when you have your phone or wallet in the napoleon pocket... and if you're wearing layers of shirts when it's cold out. Mar 20, 2015

BRIAN P: The bionic air is older product with lower rating.
Nucleon kr 1i is a newer product with a higher rating. It didn't exist when i shopped for back protector.
I use my bionic air in a cape town air dry star jacket. Tons of air flow., great in hot weather, very flexible & comfortable.
Not sure about fit for gp r. Should fit.
If you narrowed you choices between these two, I'd opt for greater protection.

pawedge: I put a large in my US-44 / E-54 Stage and GP plus jackets and it fits but is tight in the pocket. There's velcro that holds the potector in place and a zipper that closes the pocket. Akhil A: Definitely not...this jacket is not exactly compressible, it kind of stays in its form because it's leather and it's racefit. May 9, 2014

Timothy O: Hello I have the Bionic in both of my Alpinestars jackets and love them. I just pulled my large out and measured it at 18.5" tall, 10" wide on top and 9" wide on the bottom. Measure your pocket and if it will fit I highly recommend this insert...way better than the foam that most jackets have. Apr 14, 2014
