I have been waiting to get a communication device that did not have a boom mic. This UClear is fantastic. The clarity of the phone calls are clear as a bell. I was able to answer my phone by just saying hello. My clients did not even know I was riding my motor cycle it was that clear. My helmet is a Shark Evoline . It did not have the cut outs for the speakers. A minor adjustment to the cheek pads and I was up an running. Only flaw is to turn it off when you take off your helmet. You won't be able to answer your calls without putting you helmet back on.

I received this item for Christmas, yesterday. I was a little worried about the $200, while mostly positive reviews, the few negative reviews showed potential disappointment. After opening the box I proceeded to install in my Scorpion EXO-400. The unit paired effortlessly with my Droid X and played music and received calls like a charm. I tested in the house with my helmet on and my wife could not tell I had a helmet on, visor opened or closed, and the clarity was spot on according to her. I then took a road test. The music volume is plenty, in fact I had to turn it down due to being too loud at 60 mph. I was not expecting this. I do not see how it would change enough at 75 mph to where it wouldn't still be more than sufficient. And trust me, my expectation were high, not to just be able to barely hear the music. Also, the voice response to answer a call worked perfectly the few times I tried it so far.
The buttons are rather hard to press, if not impossible, with gloves on. This is my only gripe about the unit with my limited use. On the next generation of this unit, I would recommend buttons with positive knobs sticking up where you could feel where your hand was with gloves on. I would also recommend a button that has a more positive push feel, that way you would know if you are depressing the button or not. I could work the buttons some while riding in gloves, but I felt it took too much attention off of driving. Time may solve this as you get use to the unit.
So:
Postives:
More than sufficient volume with music and calls
Great clarity at low speed with better than acceptable clarity at highway speed (my wife did say I was yelling into the phone, something I need to try not to do. I guess I was compensating for something that wasn't needed)
Pairs easily to devices
Easy to install
Negatives:
Only one so far is the difficulty in pushing the correct buttons while riding with gloves.

Easy to use and install.
Yet the problem comes from noise.
Forget highway anything. You will never hear it. Even with earplugs in the speakers do not go loud enough to be usefull.
Maybe it would be better if you had a big windshield.
Pairing is simple. All functions work great except phone calls.
No one heard me over the wind.
I tried a hjc and shark evoline helmet.
I ridea sv 1000s with 2 brothers exhuast. I bet that could be my problem. Yet even at highway speeds the wind is louder than pipes

Unit was easy to install on my Bell Star, RS-1, Vortex, and Scorpion EXO-700. Speaker placement is key if you want to get full volume out of music playback. This can mean in some cases that you are blocking the mics with the cheek pads and that's where you hear people saying that they sound a bit muffled but clear to people on the other end of the call. Buttons are a bit stiff to press and multiple button combinations takes practice. You'll get muscle memory with practice, meaning you'll learn where the buttons are and it becomes easier over time. Just as a new helmet has the visor lift tab in different spots, you have to get used to it. Personally, I think the Sena unit has ease of functionality over all the other units. Afterall, it's only a jog dial and a single button in back. It is bulkier and you do have to have room for a boom mic in your helmet, but you also have options with the Sena like buying an earbud unit, which is optimal for listening to music or calls. But the larger unit is going to create more helmet wind noise. It's a trade-off which you'd like best really. Personally, I like this U-Clear unit but I think maybe the next gen they'll make the buttons easier to press. With normal summer riding gloves it's a tad tough to get the feel. not impossible, but takes practice as I mentioned. I think winter gloves would be a problem. Listening to music via earbuds offers the best volume and least noise intrusion. I previously used an i-Touch for that, but now i just sync my LG Optimus and use it exclusively with the U-Clear. Listening to music off the phone with only earbuds you do not get enough volume to ride at highway speeds. The U-Clear is plenty loud enough. Just make sure the speakers are placed best for your ear positions. Trial and error.
I have to update my profile on here. I currently ride a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 1000. Least amount of wind noise is best with screen in full down position, even on highway it's not bad at all.

Awesome bluetooth device.
Shopped around and decided to get UClear. Obviously not yet sure of durability, but it seems very solid
Great sound music and calls....Answer calls by just saying "pickup" or "hello".
Easy install..just depends on your helmet liner, but installed it in 5 minutes on my HJC.

The UClear unit is a snap to install and setup. It paired with my phone immediately, and works well for receiving calls or listening to music. I have not used the intercom functionality.
Phone:
Call sound is of reasonable quality. Similar to most speaker phones I've used. Depending on how your helmet is laid out, you may have different results with the microphone placement. I use a Shoei Qwest, which only really fits the mics facing in one direction and the cheek pads are directly in front of the mic. This means I don't get ideal placement, but I am still intelligible to the person on the other end of the call. Voice call answering works fine. I have not tried voice dialing, due to issues with getting the button combination right while riding. Volume through the speakers is fine. I've had no issues hearing even at 60+ mph.
Music:
Note: I ride with 22 Db HearDefenders-DF ear plugs, so my comments are colored as such.
The speakers are designed to be low profile, and they are not ideal music speakers. There is no bass driver to speak of, so you have essentially no low end at all. Volume is loud enough to hear through ear plugs well, but it needs to be near the highest volume settings. Without ear plugs, it gets louder than you need.
The system pairs easily with a phone, and sound is generally not fuzzy at all. I get the occasional sound drop when I turn my head away from the phone in my pocket.
Concerns:
The attachment system is worrisome. The slide in clip doesn't really hold the unit at all. Normal use or riding won't dislodge it, but if you brush against in, the unit can pop out of the clip. I'd prefer a more of a locking mechanism to hold the unit to the clip.
The 'paper clip' style holder is fairly thick. If your helmet has a neck roll flush with the outer shell, you will have to use the adhesive clip. The clip is also curved, so, depending on your helmet shape, you may only get partial contact with the adhesive. I had this issue with the Qwest, but I was able to push the clip down and the adhesive seems quite strong so far. I probably wouldn't leave my helmet in the sun for long, however.
Wiring may be an issue if you don't have a fully removable helmet liner. The Qwest only has removable cheek pads, so I had to stretch the wire a bit to get it to work. I was able to run the wire up through the liner near the top back, but there is very little slack.
Operation of the unit with gloves, especially winter gloves is problematic. Most of the functions require either multiple buttons to be pressed at once, or multiple presses on the same button quickly. Finding the right spot to press is not always easy. Sometimes it seems like you've pressed the right place/speed, but get either no response or multiple single press responses. It can take several tries to get a track change or pause (single button, double press) while listening to music, so I generally don't try to make outgoing calls (two button combo) while riding.
Overall, I'd say it's a decent headset if you want to avoid a boom mic and it's not too expensive. There are probably better headsets out there with a mic.

Surprised by this from my wife for my birthday, I was skeptical of the sound quality, both from a caller and callee perspective. I immediately installed it and went out for a ride.
The microphone and noise canceling quality is phenomenal. Only at or near highway speeds did my wife say that background noise was noticeable. My helmet is pretty loud (Bell Vortex), so can be difficult to hear above about 30mph, but with the cutouts, installation was a SNAP. Pairing was simple. Operation is a breeze. I simply love this thing.
Knowing my wife can call me at any time while out joyriding makes it completely worth it. Having some background music while riding is a huge plus, but don't expect tiny speakers to give your Bose-type sound; they get the job done.
Recently, the USB charging jack broke when plugging it in. BE CAREFUL to line it up properly! I wrote to UClear, and they're replacing the unit. Support gets two thumbs up! So nice to see a company fully back up their product.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Answer:
You will have to check the helmet yourself. If you remove the cheek pads, you can take a look inside the wall of the helmet and see if there's an indent. Most helmet nowadays have circular indents near where the ear would be so that you can install speakers. Some people have also cut into the foam area which I would not recommend.

You may be able to find a solution by fitting them behind the cheekpads, but unless you have a cut-out in the EPS liner fitment will be less than ideal.

Answer:
No. Different brands use different transmit and receive frequencies. While you may 'pair' them because they will recognize another blue tooth device, they will not communicate with each other. In other words once you 'pair' them and try to initiate a chat, they will not connect to the other brand. It's called wanting the public to only buy their units. None of them are universal.

To clarify from the previous answer: The HBC-100 will only pair to other HBC units, however, the same is true of the Cardo. Cardo devices only pair to other Cardo bluetooth units.

Answer:
Yes. There is only one speaker/driver/etc output. Good news is, helmet to helmet comms is where this unit shines. If you're only ever going to talk to your pillion, there are wired rider-pillion systems for cheap.

Answer:
No. The Main helmet must alternate between the other two helmets. The passenger and buddy rider could not talk with our set. At 1 time, we did have all 3 talking open mike, then it went away. Scala Tech support informed me they will not do this. When I told them they did, they just repeated....they will not do this. Buy something else.

No, this intercom system only works in pairs. You can only communicate with one other rider at a time. For full conference ability I have heard the Scala G4 is an option...

Answer:
If the helmet has ear flaps, yes. But the speakers would be pressing against your ears so I would find something to fit them inside and velcro that to the ear flaps so you have some padding between your ears and the speakers.

Answer:
Without ear pockets there would be no place to mount the speakers/microphones, so I don't see a way that this could be mounted on a half helmet unless you could improvise a mounting solution. 3/4, full-face, or modular helmets shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, although the wind hitting the microphone would probably feed in a little too much and sound like you are in a helicopter. It is supposed to have some kind of technology to filter it out but some still picks up.

U-Clear does not come out and say what it is, however, the range is horrible and good for canyons. Based on what I have seen with mine, I wouldn't use it for more than driver-passenger communication.

thanks chris for the reply...as far as ease of access/reception because of it being in my pocket....i was referring to my inner jacket pocket, which is about chest high. the unit would probably be clipped to the top of the pocket facing towards me so i could access the controls, and since my jacket is rarely (if ever) fully zipped, being able to use it shouldn't be too difficult. and assuming i can find a way to extend the the cable to use it this way, reception shouldn't be a problem i don't think. i've been using the same/similar setup for the last few years, but wired not bluetooth, with my ipod/phone with a y-splitter plugged in with one outlet for my ear buds and the other outlet connected to an audio-plug line snaked to the front of my bike to my Escort 9500xi radar. which is the other reason why i might use my setup instead of the helmet one, since i have yet to find a bluetooth adapter for my radar...leaving me still having to run an audio wire to whatever device i use. and it would be a lot easier to run it to the bluetooth in my pocket rather than on the helmet. unless you know of a bluetooth adapter that would hook up to a head-phone jack on the radar to send to the bluetooth unit?

I don't know of an adapter as you mentioned, but it sounds like the application you are describing would work for the HBC-100. Since we are getting into details here it may be easier to continue this discussion by phone - 877-792-9455. Thanks!

hey guys, first off gotta say i just found your page on facebook and i'm a superfan already. i have yet to find any site that goes in depth with video etc...on product description and such as you guys do....AWESOME! ok, back to my question. so i've been looking for a bluetooth set up forever, one that's not bulky/ugly/ungodly expensive...came across this and seems pretty much what i'm looking for. i was just wondering if it would still work fine if i didn't connect it to the helmet, but instead clipping it to my inside pocket on my jacket? obviously i would probably need some kind of extension for the cable, but other than that it should work just the same right? (only curious cuz i'm not too keen with stickin' stuff on my helmet, small or not...lol). thanks for all your help and keep up the great work!

Answer:
How would you press the buttons for the device if it were inside your jacket pocket? I think you're making more trouble for yourself than you'll be able to handle trying to modify by elongating the cable to the speakers. They are multi wires for each speaker/mic, so I think you would muck that up right off the bat trying to splice new wires into them, There goes $200.00! What needs to happen in the future is that you have a bluetooth connection between the unit itself and the speakers/mics. Then you can mount the control unit say on the left side of the gas tank and visually see where and what you are pressing. That would require larger speaker units to house bluetooth circuitry, and also batteries that would need charging along with the base unit. Until that day comes we are still hindered by wiring the controller to the speakers and mics in all brands... so far ;-)

Answer:
That is an interesting idea! I would imagine you would need to do some custom wiring since there is no extension available for this unit. The other hurdle is making sure you can still access the controls if it is in your pocket. Also, the reception would not be as good in your pocket as on the helmet so you will probably lose some range.
