Scorpion EXO-500 Oil Helmet - Hi-Viz Neon

The Hi-Viz Neon Scorpion EXO-500 Oil Helmet immediately catches the eye with its innovative graphic designs.  The EXO-500 is inspired by its older brother, the Scorpion EXO-1000.  The EXO 500 Helmet is based on the GT philosophy and is fitted as standard with the last generation visor of its elder.  And as if that were not enough, it integrates the SpeedView® built-in retractable sunvisor treated with anti-fog coating on both sides. Two accessories usually reserved for high-end helmets! Comprising 3 caps and a lighter and more durable shell than its predecessor, fitted with a very soft and comfortable inner lining thanks to the new KwikWick2® liner and triple density foam cheek pads, the Scorpion EXO 500 Helmets will drastically change your expectations from a full face helmet of the standard range. Equipped with the revolutionary Airfit® technology and a state-of-the-art ventilation system, chances are the new Scorpion will steal the show from the much more expensive helmets among those daily users who want to buy the best helmet for the best price.

Features

  • Kwikwick2® Liner - moisture wicking, hypoallergenic, removable, machine washable, soft
  • SpeedView® Retractable sunvisor - treated with antifog on both sides
  • Airfit® technology - Inflate and deflate the cheek pads to make it fit perfectly- this provides a better fit thus better safety and shock absorption.
  • Speedshift® visor system for extremely quick visor changes
  • EverClear® no-fog visor: Optically-correct aero-tuned shield with state-of-the art fog-free technology and anti-scratch hardened coating.
  • Advanced Polycarbonate Composite Engineered Shell: Quiet, aero-tuned design for wind-tunnel tested comfort. EPS-lined chin bar for additional protection.
  • Triple density foam cheek pads

This is my second Scorpion EXO helmet, the first being a 900 Transformer in hi-viz as well. The 500 Oil is a great combination of features and eye-catching, but not overly aggressive or cliched (no skulls or flames), styling...the hi-viz colors under the graphics on this helmet really do have some pop and seem just a hair brighter/lighter than the solid hi-viz paint on the 900 (maybe it's the contrast with the slick black graphics, or it could just be my imagination).
Sizing for me was a bit strange. In the 900, I wore an XL because the 2XL was just WAY too big, but the helmet would also exert some VERY unpleasant pressure on my forehead that became so painful I would have to stop riding every 45 minutes or so (this seems to be a commonly voiced compliant amongst other EXO 900 owners I've spoken with--they suggest either stopping every 45 minutes or so as I did, or take some sandpaper to the foam liner and hollow out a bit of the offending material). In this 500, the 2XL fit me just perfectly, and in fact, the cheek pads feel just a tad more snug on the 500 2XL than the 900 XL's...not unpleasantly so, but enough that I notice the difference. Fortunately, I have not noticed any of the forehead pain that plagued me with the 900 and the reduced weight of the 500 allowed me a pretty good ride without any of the fatigue that drained me in the past.
The sheild controls are functional, but will take some getting used to. The shield will raise and lower at will using a standard thumb tab off the clear shield (one on both sides for ambidextrous operation--nice), but there's also a 3-position switching lever on the left that locks the shield closed, leaves it in "neutral" so you can open and close it as you wish, or locks the shield in a "slightly open" position for venting while on the move. I like the slightly open setting as it adds a lot of airflow without compromising eye-protection. But the lever itself is VERY small and the three positions are VERY close together making it difficult to both locate and manipulate the switch with a gloved hand. The fully locked position doesn't seem to make any more of a firm seal to the shield gasket than you get just by closing the shield on your own, and I can't for the life of me figure out when I'd want to lock my visor closed anyway as then I'd just have to fumble around for the lock switch to open it again when stopped at a light or something like that (it's not like locking your car doors and rolling up your windows to keep out intruders!).
The internal sun visor is a fantastic feature, one which I'll refuse to live without now as I always seemed to have problems with helmet liners pressing on the stems of my sunglasses, and I can't be certain, but the 500's internal visor seems to come down just a hair lower than the one on my EXO 900 did (though that also could be my imagination). Again however, the sliding switch for the sun visor is also very small and not always easy to find; I much preferred the big, easy to feel/locate slider on the 900. These two usability issues are small quips and I'm sure I'll eventually get used to them, but I've ended up spending a bit more time fumbling around for and trying to operate those two switches than I would have liked. However, the Speedshift change-out mechanism works as well as advertised and you can easily swap out a face-shield in about 15-20 seconds. This is a MUCH more user-friendly system than what was required to dismantle the 900's shield or transform it from full-face to 3/4; I have ordered a mirrored silver shield and am looking forward to having the option to change out the looks on a whim without having it turn into a major ordeal to do so.
Airflow is great, in fact I could feel the airflow MUCH better in the 500 than I ever could in my 900, especially on the top of my head. Maybe this has to do with the two separate vents on top as opposed to the single central vent on the 900? I did notice that the 500 does tend to get a bit loud, almost roaring, for me at times, especially at the chin vent as it moves a LOT of air. I did not notice the whistling at the top that was reported in the Webbikeworld review, but I did notice that airflow through both top vents at once didn't seem as high as when I slightly turned my head to one side or another to favor one vent over another. I'm a cruiser rider so I sit fully upright on my bikes--as such, the top vents did seem to SLIGHTLY favor a more aggressive forward lean before they really started moving some air so I adjusted my helmet just slightly downward to compensate. Overall, I was very impressed with how much airflow this helmet afforded and found it much cooler and more comfortable at speed than my 900.
The only oversight that immediately jumps out at me seems to be the lack of an aero-skirt for colder climates...the chin is covered by a mesh fabric skirt that also moves quite a bit of air (may have also contributed to the roaring I got with mine), but many of the other EXO models have a solid aero-skirt option to accommodate cold weather and this one doesn't--I have asked Scorpion about making one available; we shall see. The liner's KwikWick material doesn't seem to hold sweat (great) and it really does look cool, but be aware that it's a black and grey oil spill pattern on WHITE fabric...not sure how that white will look after a few years of heavy use.
Still, the features, fit, comfort, and great alternative styling for a hi-viz helmet make this one a winner. A few usability issues aside, it really does offer tremendous value for the money!

I couldn't wait for this helmet to come out. I love the fact that it's a hi-viz helmet but not just plain boring hi-viz. Love the graphics. I also love the drop down sun visor and the easy change visor. The inflatable cheek pads are pretty cool too. Helps with a more custom fit. These are features you'd see in a $300-$400 helmet.

Answer:
No, this helmet is not SNELL M2010 rated due to its internal retractable sunvisor mechanism.
