REV'IT! Sand Pants

The Sand Pants replace the extremely popular REV'IT Dakar Pant.

The SAND Pants offer 4-season, year round comfort and protection from both pavement and the elements.  The SAND Pants offer a double PWR/shell seat and PWR/wax coating on the inside of the legs, for a better grip on the bike. The legs are also versatile: thin enough to wear inside the boot, but wide enough to wear over it. Watercatchers prevent water from creeping up into the leg, and a detachable thermal lining and removable 3-layer membrane round out the total comfort of the SAND trousers.

The Sand Pants will zip with any current model men's REV'IT Jacket

I am a very critical person and I found the quality of these pants to be great just like the matching jacket. The pants fit a bit snug per design. When standing it is normal to have the knee protection drop to where the top of the knee protectors to rest on the bottom of knee cap, but when sitting on the bike they are positioned perfectly on your knees. When walking with all liners installed the pants feel as if they are sagging in the crotch and I have to pull them up after I walk around. Might just be the way they fit on me???
I have ridden 1100 miles in them with only mild rain and between 45 to 75 degrees.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Really like these pants. So far I've been riding in the 90F range without too much heat problems and in the mid 60F range with the liner and no problems. Size is strange. Pants fits small with both liners installed, but big with them out. I wear a 40 waist Levi Jean, but had to get the 4X model of the Sand pant to fit me. Waist adjusters tend to not be very functional and turn sideways. Wish there were loops for a belt or another way to hold them up when the liners are all removed. All small problems that aren't a deal killer, but still worth noting.

Just got back from a 740mile ride, through the low and high temperatures and I was comfortable and protected against the weather elements. This is a must have if you ride long distances and you want to be well protected if the weather changes on you.

Got these a few weeks ago and waited for a good cold rain to actually do a review. I am 5'6", have about a 32-34 inch waist(depending on the holiday season), and a 30 inch inseam. I bought the Medium-Short version and they fit just right. I am not using them as overpants, so if that is your plan you might want to go a size up. Also, you will have to put on the pants and then boots, in case you were wondering.
My only other pair of motorcycle-specific pants were some TourMaster Venture pants. Compared to those, these pants are more refined, breathe better, have a slimmer cut, and are less bulky but at 2.5 times the price.
These pants come with 2 liners: 1 waterproof and 1 thermal. Went out on a ride today in 38 degree weather with some freezing rain for about an hour with both liners in and just a pair of underwear underneath and stayed warm and dry for the whole ride. Having both liners in was a little bulkier than not, but not bad. Also, the legs of the thermal liner will get a little wet at the bottom in wet conditions due to the way they are attached, but it's more of an observation than a gripe.
There are two zippered vents in front of the cargo pockets which aren't waterproof and aren't paired with some exhaust vents. Depending on how you are positioned on your bike the vents might just face straight up instead of forward. Since I haven't ridden in them in any sort of really hot days I can't vouch for the vents.
Armor consists of some pretty decent knee armor and some ok-but-nothing-great hip armor. I do wish the hip armor could be switched out for something better, but the pockets are sewn very particularly and I assume if you buy something like Forcefield armor that you will have to cut it to get it fit properly.
Haven't really given them a real workout so I can't attest to durability.
All in all a good pair of pants, look nice, good liners, and comfortable on the bike.

Stats:
10k+ miles @ 15F - 105F in all weather, snow, rain, high / low humidity etc
6’ 132lbs 36” chest and long arms 32” inseam
Bike: ninja 250
Medium on both pants and jacket both in white.
Other gear for reference: REV'IT! Rainstar H2O Balaclava, OnRoad Sidi boots, REV'IT! Phantom GTX Gloves, Hitair vest.
Fit:
These fit loose in the waist when all liners are out but this is corrected by using the ¾ zipper from the jacket in combination. I ordered the medium because of my long legs. When all liners are in however these fit really well … you might actually want to order them big if your between sizes and plan on riding in the winter.
Quick points:
Good: True 4 season gear
Zip in liners rock, easy in easy out.
¾ round zip to pants rocks.
Easy to get pants over my boots.
Easy access pockets (see note below)
Waterproof pockets work very well
Vents work pretty well (see note below)
The not so good:
The velcro at the bottom of the pants needs to be redesigned for people with smaller calves. When I put it on I am all the way over on the last strip and off the center two >_<
The velcro loses its grip as well and must be cleaned once in awhile as it will pull the female velcro into the male velcro over time.
The velcro is losing stitches from high use. To fix this issue I use a velcro strap over the pants to ensure it doesn’t flap open near its full length (this has happened before)
Getting in and out of the pants are easy … only if you take off your boots. You could probably get in them with shoes but boots are hard to get through the legs.
hard to get hands in knee pockets when gloves are on, even off the bike. I do keep my sunglasses on my left pocket though and have put them on while moving at fast highway speeds. The trick is to hang one of the legs out the flap on top of the pocket before closing it.
Water Response:
Your outer shell as stated is not waterproof, it will get soaked and literally drip onto whatever surface you have decided to hang it over to dry. Your legs will stay dry but your boots might get a little wet. It seems water sometimes still finds it way up 4 or 6 “ inside the rain guard on the boots. This is helped by using a velcro strap, or hair tie, over the pants. I keep a set of hair ties on both my boots just for this purpose. The pockets will keep items dry so long as you remember to close them. And note the knee pockets are not waterproof. When you take your boots off and your soaked it might be wiser to push the pants past your shins before removing the boots to keep your feet dry.
Venting:
The warmest part of this pant when the vents are open is the shin and calf area. When the vents are open most of the wind will terminate near your crotch area, which is good in my book, this is assuming you don’t have a tight fit with the clothing you choose to don beneath the pants and your thighs. If you really want to flow air I would suggest partially closing the velcro nearest the full length over the boot or consider spacers, or breathable fabric between your boot and the velcro’ed shell. You will sweat in these pants during the summer, especially below the knee.
Cool:
If the weather is below 65 I wear the rain liner in, if below 45 I have the thermal liner in. If below 35 then I put on a pair of long johns or flannel pants under my jeans I would be wearing in all three cases. Depending how the airstream hits your legs on your bike you might have to shift these numbers. I made leg / foot wind blockers for my bike when temps were 15-32 in the mornings over winter. They help a lot, however the coolest spot was the top right thigh for some reason or another the wind was faster there. I never needed heated gear to bear with the cold.
Crash report:
30-35mph tumbling lowside with airvest deployed. The pants didn’t look damaged at all … it took some time to find it actually. Full video on youtube if you search for it … all damage highlighted to gear in video.
Upper body was ok, lower body I think my foot was bruised pretty good and I had some minor bruising on my hips where the padding wasn’t present.

I bought these specifically to put over medical scrub pants for my commute to work on cold mornings, and they are PERFECT for that task. The three liners make them extremely warm (warm enough that now I want the Sand jacket) the padding is nice and while the pads do shift when you walk around, they slide right into place when you get on the bike.
The sizing is a little tough. I am fairly tall, and wear a 32x34 jean, which by the sizing chart is a medium. I bought a large as I was planning on wearing the pants over scrubs or skinny jeans, and when I got them, they were too short. I exchanged for a large long, and truthfully, they could even be a little longer! they ride up to about 4 inches above my ankle when I'm on the bike, which is fine when I'm wearing boots, but I wear sneakers when I'm commuting to work and end up with wind-blasted ankles.
Besides that, these are warm, waterproof comfortable pants, and I'd definitely recommend them.

Is it better to go too long or too short? The short seem just fine as I'm standing but too short when I'm mounted [well above my ankle]. The regular seem long as I'm standing but right when I'm sitting on a bike [at my ankle]. What is the proper length for a motorcycle pant?

Answer:
The pants come with a zipper that you can sew onto a jacket. So I assume you could do it or have a tailor do it and voila the pants now zip to your jacket. Just make sure that you don't puncture the whatever waterproof membrane you have in the jacket.

Answer:
The hip pads are accessible via a velcro tab on the shell. The opening is 6". The main concern with 'upgrading' them would be the shape of most CE hip armor not matching its shape. You would have to modify the armor or mesh it in some way with the existing armor to keep it in place.

When I went down in this gear my hip did get a minor bruise while tumbling at 35mph only where the pads were not present toward the back of my hip bones. So they worked enough for me in my low side.

I have included an image of the stock padding to give you an idea of the pocket shape (on 12" tile), and it is a very tight fit. I would guess the pocket could be slightly smaller than the pad as well since it tends to naturally cup when you put it in. The pad is facing outward as it would curl up if I didn't hold it this way as it has conformed to my hips over 10,000 miles of riding.

Answer:
These pants are meant to fit as a standard pant, but if you order a size larger, they can be worn as an over-pant. They are a bit cumbersome to take on and off over street clothes and boots since the side zipper does not go all the way up to the waist.

Answer:
I would say that to put them over your street clothes you should buy a size up. You will not be able to put them on or take them off if you have your boots on.

Answer:
Riding boots probably not, but especially if you take out one of the liners you can slide these over pants (as long as the pants aren't too baggy or bulky). I wear mine over medical scrub pants and skinny Levi's pretty frequently.

They aren't made to go over street clothes. They work great bare leg or better yet with capilene longies.

Answer:
If you want to wear street clothes under them, I'd recommend going up one size. You still will not be able to slide into them wearing any kind of footwear, since the knees/armor are a bit snug.

You might be able to get them on over tight fitting jeans or some lightweight fabric, assuming you remove the liners. No way you can get them on over boots.

Answer:
They will definitely go over boots (I have Sidi Adventures). Pants shouldn't really be a problem either, at least not with the liners removed. The cold weather liners make a pretty big difference in the fit, but I'm guessing you'd still be okay.

Answer:
The REV'IT! Sand pants have three layers, the outer shell with abrasion resistance and armor, the waterproof liner, and the thermal liner. As long as the waterproof liner is installed you are good to go, however, without it the outer shell has no water resistance properties.

Answer:
There is a separate waterproof liner. I've worn them both with and without the liner, and it adds negligible bulk. I haven't worn them in the summer with the liner in so I can't say how well they breathe, but the material is nice enough that I wouldn't expect you to get too swampy. Same for the jacket, by the way. And I really like both.

Answer:
They have a thin waterproof breathable liner that zips in at the waist and hem. There is also an insulated liner that I haven't used yet. They are quite breathable without the liner and are in no way water resistant. I might add a little shower on a hot day feels great due to the evaporative effect...at least here in New Mexico.

REV'IT! Jackets are European (slim) cut and generally more narrow in the shoulders than other brands. Please take this into account when choosing the appropriate size. Most riders with any body type other than "slim" would need to order one size larger than they typically might wear in other brands, if you are in between sizes, we recommend erring on the larger side. If you have any questions about REV'IT! sizing please call 877-792-9455 for help.

How To Measure REV'IT! Jacket Size

How To Measure REV'IT! Pants Size

SIZING INSTRUCTIONS

We highly recommend finding a cloth tape measure and taking the time to take these measurements.  REV'IT! sizes will not necessarily correlate with fitment in other brands.

  • Chestwidth: Measure from under/top of armpit cross chest to under/top of other armpit, then across back to first armpit
  • Waist: Measure at the hourglass of your torso, (circumference measured at your belly button
  • Hips: pelvic bone to pelvic bone, the widest part of your hips below the waist
  • Inseam: from crotch to big ankle bone
  • Outseam: from waist to big ankle bone
