did its primary job
I recently hit a big 6' wallaby at about 80kph/50mph on my BMW G650GS and thanks to my jacket, my upper body didn't get torn up and barely got road rash. I only had the armored mesh layer on over a not tucked in light t-shirt.

It stayed in place mostly as I skidded across the pavement mostly left side belly down- I do remember checking to make sure it was down at the waist, it was - and only sustained minor to moderate damage. Nothing gave way, all armor stayed secure and pretty much in place. Left elbow, arm that took all the blunt force, did ride up slighly but my skin was only slighlty scuffed.

I believe the jacket could come through a slightly faster crash and certainly with the outer layer you'd be even better off against road rash.

It's likely I'll shortlist this jacket when I'm healed enough to ride again (no jacket guards against broken bones!) as I loved the comfort, versatility and, yes, style. But the most important thing for me is protection - and this jacket did its job for me. I could have easily kept wearing this same jacket after the crash but the medical team had to cut it off :(

Don't Believe The Waterproof!
Pros:

My wife ordered this jacket and we both love the style and versatility. Great on very warm days and very good wind protection on cooler days.

The decision to design the riding protection into the middle layer is a great idea and works very well in this respect. When it is warm, take off the outer later. When it turns windy or chilly, just throw on the outer layer and you are set - there is no taking off the outer layer, zipping or snapping in the middle layer, before you are finally off again. This jacket is quick and easy to adapt to changes in the weather.

She has yet to get the jacket into colder temps (below 10C), but believes it will work with her into Fall and early Winter.

The styling is simply great. My wife is 5'7", 125lbs, and petite. Work with the sizing chart and you should be fine. She simply looks sexy in this jacket...well, all the time, but you know what I mean. The jacket is very European in styling and she wears it well.

Cons:

Now for the bad/disappointing report: THIS JACKET IS NOT WATERPROOF AT ALL! We just had a 30-minute ride in a very strong downpour yesterday. The jacket had her wet within 5 minutes. The complete arm (both) was soaked through. The body was also seeping in very quickly. Sorry, Joe Rocket, but you really missed the testing of this jacket in the rain. It failed miserably.

Consolation:

That said, if you really like the styling of this jacket - to which we can attest - and you only require warmth, good airflow, and good wind protection, then this jacket is a safe bet. Instead of returning the jacket for a better rain protection and, thus, sacrificing style, my wife decided that she would use another outer rain jacket above the riding protection mesh middle layer (again, a great idea). This way she gets the great styling of the jacket for walking around town when rain protection isn't needed, the great airflow of the middle later, good wind protection of the outer layer, and a warm vest addition for colder days. When it rains, she just leaves off the outer layer and wears a true rain jacket over it all. This way she also can change her look using the rest of her rain wardrobe without worrying about protection, which is underneath it all.

If you want rain protection, do not buy this jacket. If you are amiable to working with the jacket because of protection and style - and just need wind protection in the outer layer, go for it!

This jacket is absolutely awesome!
I love this jacket. I bought it while the weather was still hot so the inner mesh portion with armor was perfect by itself. I got so much airflow I barely felt like I was wearing a jacket. I now have the vest liner zipped in and I'm still just wearing the inner jacket. Perfect for the beginning of fall. I love the look of the inner jacket and the outer jacket. The fit is great too. I am 5'6" 129 lbs and the small fits me perfectly. The extra small was a little tight. The cool thing is I can also wear the inner jacket under my leather jacket for a different look and still have all the armor protection. I highly recommend this jacket.

I love it!
This is the first real riding jacket I have bought and I absolutely love it. I have only worn the mesh as I live in the desert and the airflow is great. I was unsure of what size to get and ended up getting a medium. I have a pear shape, am about 5'4" with a 32 in waist. The great thing about the jacket is that is has zippers to make the waist bigger, so if you are pear shape, this is very helpful.

awesome concept, interesting fit.
I just ordered the alter ego 3.0 to go along with my new motorcycle I purchased last week. I bought a 2011 suzuki gsxr- 750. I was looking for a versatile jacket for both the hot summers in Texas and the cooler winters, though mainly for the spring, summer, and fall. This jacket looked to be exactly what I wanted! My husband had a jacket similar to this one and I loved that he could tear off an outer layer and have a cool mesh jacket, so I was determined to find one for the ladies.

I love the way the jacket comes apart into 2 jackets, as opposed to a puzzle of fabric and zippers like my husbands does. Also the outer jacket folds up into a pouch that is just small enough to fit in the undertail of my bike. It seems pretty warm, though I haven't been able to get out on the bike yet, I've just been wearing it around my house and yard in debate on whether to keep it or return it.

Here's why I have had some debate, the fit is weird. The under jacket fits great, exceptional without the spine protection, but still a pretty great fit in the shoulders, neck, and arms. However, zip on the outer layer and the whole thing gets longer and not just longer but the shoulders of the jacket actually sit like an inch off my shoulders. This causes the collar of the jacket to go all the way to my chin and I feel like I am suffocating. I have to leave it unzipped like halfway for it to be comfortable, so that's a problem because its not giving maximum protection. The whole shoulders and chest area are a bit large on me.

I am 5'3" and 115 pounds, based on my measurements 32-26-32 I ordered a small to ensure I could fit an extra hoodie or fleece under the jacket if I needed too.

Overall I am pretty happy with it and since my winters are so short I don't think the outer layer will really be a problem and I will probably just see if it needs some breaking in time to let the fabric settle.

Soaked
Despite my vaguely negative review, I do love this jacket. I'm just a daily commuter, and I found that it is not really waterproof. I am going to send it in to Joe Rocket for "repair" (?), and/or try waterproof spray, but it *will* soak through in a downpour... and it takes a while to dry, so it will still be wet when you want to ride home at the end of the day >.<

100% water-resistant (you'll do fine in a light/short shower). Not-so-waterproof.

Sizing: I am 5'7.5" and about 145lbs. The medium is a little too big, but it cinches up well and allows me to bundle. I have a really skinny neck, but the collar is too small once I have a balaclava/heated collar piled on underneath (and a ponytail if I got it tucked in). I do find that if I bundle up that much I still keep warm even without the top snap buttoned - and I can button it with less material underneath just fine. If you're biking at 35 degrees or lower, I would definitely recommend heated gear underneath - it won't do the trick on it's own.

I'm also a little put-out by how the wrists of the two layers line up. Not as elegant as I hoped, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Girlfriend loves it
Got this jacket for my girlfriend based on my many years of happiness and satisfaction with the Joe Rocket brand. My girlfriend loves this jacket and mostly wears the mesh under jacket because we live in Florida and it's hot most of the time. I'm just happy I found some protection she will actually wear. This jacket fits her well and meets the measurements on the sizing page very well. She was not happy buying a large but when I explained that the bust was the main reason for the sizing she was a little more ok with it (LOL). But seriously, if you follow the sizing chart, you'll get the right size and have a safe and very comfortable ride. Excellent style, quality and fit. Most of all the ability to make this jacket transform from a winter jacket to a summer jacket is truly unique. Overall a great value and a very safe jacket. She loves it, and I love that she wears it.

Awesome jacket
Have been wearing this jacket for about a month and a half. Have used all parts of the jacket together and have broken them down individually according to the winter here in Florida, which ranges from highs in the 80's to lows in 50's during the day. Love the mesh jacket with the liner for most days and the outer shell for colder days. Fits great, only 1 minor complaint that the sleeves were a little long. Not enough to cause any real problems though.

Why cant you find womens' jackets like this in stores?
This is a great jacket. I got it for my girlfriend who is an occasional passenger on my Tenere. I wanted something that would protect her and offer three season comfort. She is very style conscious and while agreeing with the protection / comfort approach also wanted something that would look good.
This jacket does all that. The design - with the mesh inner jacket holding all the armor - is brilliant. We got the black and purple. Both the mesh jacket and the outer jacket look fantastic, and the customizable fit highlights her highlights.
I saw the reviews saying the rain protection isn't what it could be. I can't comment on that - I don't plan to bring her along if it's raining.
We checked several brick and mortar stores in the area - no women's jacket anyone had in store was close to the features, look, and fit of this jacket.

Great Jacket
I purchased the men's Joe Rocket Alter Ego jacket last year and absolutely love it. I live in SW Florida and wear the mesh even past 90 degrees. This past Christmas I bought the ladies version for my wife. It was a tad too small so I returned it with no hassle. They sent the larger size and she loves it. Thanks Revzilla.

This is the first jacket that I've bought. I really liked the design of the jacket and it looked flattering for a female figure, while also providing protection. For the price, I think it's amazing that you basically get 2/3 jackets in one. I showed this to my boyfriend to get his approval and he is going to buy the male version of this jacket because he liked it so much. Really looking forward to it getting delivered and getting to try it on!

3-in-1! I love how the windproof layer is on the outside, much less hassle for when the temps go up or down during a ride. I currently don't have my own jacket, I ride in either my brother's old Joe Rocket mesh, which is too big for me; or my mom's fake-leather jacket, which fits, but sometimes she's using it! With this I don't need to buy multiple jackets, or wonder which to wear, since I'll be able to keep the extra layers in my saddle bag. I like the style, just hope the size I picked fits.

I wanted something feminine looking that had a lot of versatility. This suits me to a T. I wear this year-round, but in the winter, I do alternate with my other jackets. This one gets used almost exclusively in the summer because of the mesh layer. I really like that the armor is in the mesh layer. I originally purchased the black color because the white/grey was not available. I am not a "black motorcycle gear" kind of person, so when the white/grey color became available I got it instead

My wife likes the versatility of this jacket and the fact the protective layer is in the middle, rather than the third layer. It has worked perfectly in this respect. The warmth and wind protection is perfect and the coolness during warmer rides is the same. The one flaw is the outer shell simply isn't waterproof. First time out the seams leaked like a sieve. However, my wife decided to keep it, and use her own trusted outer shell that is not for motorcycling, rather a good Gortex jacket.

What CE back protector do you recommend for this jacket?
Paul M on Mar 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I don't know what CE stand for, but the jacket came with a back protector, and also shoulder and elbow protectors when I bought it. Read the product description to make sure it still does. they are removable.
Is the pocket where you can add a spine protector only part of the outside jacket? So as to say if i purchased this and a c.e. spine protector but im mostly going to be using the 'inner' jacket will there be a place to put the spine protector in that inner mesh jacket?

BEST ANSWER: The mesh jacket has the pocket for the spine protector. It comes with one, probably not as good as you want to buy but yeah, all the protection is in the mesh jacket part. So if you take out the insulated vest, and remove the outer shell you still have all the armor.
Was this jacket good during the winter season? Did it keep you warm?
Aeisha D on Mar 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: In the state I live in the Winter season is way too cold, snowy and icy for riding. I bought a good leather jacket, so did not use this whole jacket much, but actually did use the interior lighter mesh jacket a number of times in the summer, for some protection that did not cook me. I would estimate that the whole jacket over the top of a hoodie or sweatshirt would be good for shorter rides around 50 degrees F, or longer rides at 55 or 60 degrees F. But that is an estimate. I really liked the 3-in-one feature, and also liked the reflective pin striping.
I think I saw an interior breast pocket on the mesh jacket. If so, is it waterproof? I currently own the Cleo 2.2 jacket, which has that interior waterproof pocket, and it's come in very handy when I've gotten caught in unexpected rain and needed to protect my phone.

BEST ANSWER: There is an interior pocket on the mesh jacket, but it is not waterproof. The inside and outside of the pocket is mesh. The interior pocket on the outer jacket is water resistant. I hope this helps.
Hi, I'm looking to purchase this Alter Ego 3.0, but I'm a bit confused on the sizing. I'm a 41inch bust, 38 waist, 41 inch hip...according to the sizing chart, I'm all over the place!
To fit my bust I'd be a Large, to fit my waist I'd be a 2Diva, to fit my hip I'd be a large.
So, would I'd best be suited to a LARGE?
I'm a 5'2" broad shouldered woman and do not want to have an issue of taking the inner shell out and having it be too big or vice versa being too small with the vest only.
Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: I bought this for my 11 year old daughter. For best results I recommend calling customer support to make sure you get the best fit.

My daughter doesn't have any problems with the jacket fitting in either configuration…it doesn't appear that the outer shell is supposed to be worn alone as the armor is fitted to the mesh jacket. You can pull the armor out and put it in the outer shell but we feel that makes things difficult and time consuming. Just the outer shell would make the jacket a bit sloppy, but again, I don't think it was designed to be worn that way.

When we want to be cooler we take off the outer shell and put it back on for rain or colder temps. as long as the mesh jacket fits the outer shell will fit too. The vest liner does add some bulk, but if you get that to fit then when you take it out the mesh jacket still fits well for us.

I can tell you that we love the jacket. It has good adjustability and can be used for more than just one temp setting. it's a good three season jacket.
So, second time I'm asking this (I'm not sure if someone thought it was a bad question so it was taken down, but if I'm spending $225 of my hard earned money on a jacket I sure would like to know what I'm getting before I've paid for it). The stock image of the black/purple is different than others I've found online. Some of them seem to be a bit more blue. Does anyone know what the true color of the jacket is?

BEST ANSWER: I bought this jacket in black for my wife and she loves it. As for the purple one, I'd go with purple. It's always hard to by online when it comes to color. That's the great thing about RevZilla! If it's not to your liking just send it back. It's only 7 bones if you don't like the color. No risk.
I live in a climate that has two seasons, Spring, Summer- would this be too warm for me?
A shopper on Jan 28, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Yes and no. The outer jacket, which is waterproof (read: windproof) will be quite warm for you. The mesh jacket underneath however (you get 2 for 1 with the Alter Ego 3.0), would keep you plenty cool in the heat. Everyone's temperature tolerances are a bit different, but my guess is that the waterproof shell would be a bit much in the summer.
I have a Cleo (trying to upgrade for more of a 3 season jacket), and I fit into the M size category according to the size chart, but it swallows me when I wear it so I was just wondering if the Alter Ego fit as generously so that I could order the correct size.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Joe Rocket Women's Alter Ego 3.0 Jacket will offer a similar fit as Cleo 2.0.
I LOVE my jacket! Just got it today and now I can't wait for riding season in Chicago.
My only question is if the inner jacket can have an extender zipped to it--it has a zipper on the lower back. Is that for an optional extender? If not, what is that for?
Eve K on Jan 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I believe the zipper in the lower back is so that you can zip it to your pants. All of my motorcycle jackets have this zipper and my armored overpants also have the zipper.
I've seen several pictures of this jacket online and can't get a feel for the true color of the black/purple jacket. I've seen some pictures where it looks more blue or blue/purple. Does anyone know if the true color of the jacket is closer to the stock picture or is it in fact a bit more blue/purple in color?

BEST ANSWER: It's black
