ICON Rimfire Gloves

Icon knows you like to ride fast. They know you love to live dangerously. And, like speeding bullet, you always hit your target. The Icon Rimfire Gloves definitely hit theirs. The mix of old-school style with modern protection and a design only Icon 1000 could come up with, these gloves are full throttle cool. Pre-tensioned elastic in the palm reduces bunching. Integrated floating D3O knuckle armor and a cadre of metal palm rivets provide a roadworthy pedigree. The Rimfire is a riding glove that captures the fortitude and grace of a more civilized era.

Features:

  • D3O  armor in knuckle
  • Abrasion resistant premium grade french cowhide chassis
  • Floating knuckle construction for flexibility
  • Secure wrist closure keeps glove in place
  • Pre-curved palm and finger design
  • Riveted palm has nomex heat-resistant backing

amended for winter wear
I just want to add a review that states something I have done to make this glove a nice Calif winter glove. I purchased a thin liner glove to wear under these and it works like a dream! I spent $20 and now have a great 4 season Calif glove. If I could, I would give this glove an 8 on bang for the buck, with the addition of an inexpensive liner. The liner also smooths out the internal leather feel that is slightly rugged otherwise.

Looks cool, but does not hold up.
These gloves are comfy and they look great! My only initial complaint was wanting the velcro to secure a little tighter around my wrists.
Now the main issue is both the protection and durability. I wore them every day for about a year. I never went down, but the fingertips have worn paper thin and the D3O in the knuckles crumbled into tiny pieces. I has to make a slit in the stitching so that I could get the bits out because they had settled in the finger tips. The knuckle padding was just poor design, but I cant even buy it separately to replace it.
The wear on the fingertips makes me seriously wonder how the rest of the leather would hold if I actually went down. Overall I'm pretty disappointed in them

Classy gloves. Retro good looks, modern protection
I am fond of these gloves. It's difficult to replace a good pair of gloves, but I was recently forced to take the plunge when my previous favorites magically disappeared somewhere in Mexico.... I tried on many pairs and spent hours and hours shopping online. I'm really picky. I build bikes and sew leather seats and stuff, and I care a LOT about small details and quality craftsmanship, especially in my leather goods.

I was specifically a shopping for a 3- seasons glove that was either brown or natural colored. I wanted a glove that was of leather construction with some modern protection yet retained a classic or retro look. I wanted a glove that was not too bulky and that appeared to be thoughtfully and intentionally well crafted.

As I narrowed my selection from the ga'zillions of gloves out there in Internetland to my top three picks, these Icon 1000 Rimfire gloves (Natural/Tan Colored) kept coming up. I was attracted to their craftsmanship and how they would be a quality all-in-glove, equally at home on a sport bike, an adventure dual sport, or a 1970's cafe racer.

When I finally was convinced that these were the best gloves for my needs, regardless of price, I then went on to shamelessly shop for the best price. Not suprisingly RevIlla once again had what i wanted at the best price anywhere.

Now to balance this review a bit, I am quite fond of these gloves, but they're not perfect. There's some elastic sewn into the fingers on the inside, and while this is executed reasonably well, you can tell it's there, so the integration isn't perfect. And yet they remain very comfortable, and seem to become more so with continued regular use.

Having said that, in the last month of ownership I've had three total strangers randomly compliment my cool gloves, which, to be completely honest, is utterly bizzar.

I recommend these gloves. Time will prove their endurance, but I believe they're going to last for many many miles, and I'm please with the purchase.

Really nice, one or two nitpicks...
Just got mine in today and went for a ride. Airflow is better than I thought. The XL fits fine for me (I measured my hand with the Revzilla guide), maybe just a hair on the large side. They look great. My only issue is that the left glove is noticeably tighter on the thumb, nearing uncomfortable. The leather should stretch, but I haven't had gloves before that were so different left to right. Take that with a grain of salt as I still need to break them in proper. Overall though, I'm pretty happy with these so far. They feel sturdy. And did I mention they look great?

Love them (Over 1 year of use)
I really like these gloves.
Though for the first week I hated them and only wore them because my wife got them for my birthday. They felt weird with the fingers/grip, but in a couple of weeks they wore in and are now great. WARNING, the studs scratch tanks! I have a habit of leaning on my tank and have had to change that. (though I still do from time to time, so more scratches). Great gloves, wear well, handle getting wet well. Mine now have a great patina and look great.

Solid. Good for cold weather
I bought this glove to 'go with' my cafe racer project, and as a generally less perforated option than my 100% perforated summer glove.
First off, the leather is solid. The seems are nice and beefy, where I imagine they could help in a slide. I really enjoy the split back panel and the d3o inserts. As you can see in the video and my photos (wont upload), the underside of fingers have an extended area before the seems meet. I feel like this adds a lot more tactile feel on the controls.
The negative is that after only a few rides, there are a few threads coming out. I imagine if it gets bad, quickly, I would either get them repaired at a leather shop or the guys and gals at Revzilla would exchange them. We shall see.
Also, I took about an hour long ride home from school tonight. Completely dark. I made sure I bundled up on the way out there, when it was sunny.
By the time I got home it was 40 degrees (1700 feet up) and people had been giving me the "You crazy yo" look. Anyways, up until about ten minutes before I got home, my hands were completely comfortable. At that point, the tips were a bit numb. With that said, I have no fairings and am getting blasted by everything. So I'd say these are definitely a great late fall glove.

Round Town Gloves with Amazing Style (over Substance)
Style 10/10!
I was attracted to the sophisticated rancher-style of these gloves. Style was why I bought them and I wasn’t disappointed. These are the coolest motorcycle gloves I’ve ever seen. Colour is great, and the slightly more natural coloured accents - where the perforated padding goes up the top of the fingers - is a nice, very subtle contrast.

Comfort 8/10
Soft right out of the box, I’m sure they’ll wear-in well and become even more comfortable quickly.

Quality 6.5/10
These are reasonably lightweight, gloves, more so that I thought they'd be from the pics. The leather looks great, but a couple of loose threads, including a red one which holds the Icon badge on, are disappointing. Only the back of the inside is (polyester) lined. Whether the feel of the leather inside the glove is intended as a feature or not, I don’t know; possibly. I still prefer linings. The D3O logo is way higher on the left glove than the right one. Annoying.

Safety 6/10(?)
Safety wise I’m not entirely convinced. The D3O knuckle protection is mostly hidden and very flexible yet seems pretty good for what it is. The leather feels quite thin, possibly accentuated by its' softness. The fit around the wrist is reasonably loose and in an accident the gloves would very possibly come off. Having said that, I'd hate to come off wearing Jeans, which rate a 1/10!

Sizing 8/10
Size wise I’m ½ way between a medium and large and having bought the Large, I wish I could tried both sizes before I committed, - hard to do from ½ way round the world. I’ll stick with the Large and see what happens. I suspect they’d wear in well and you could risk going down a size.

Practicality 8/10
These are a short glove so be mindful of that. I haven’t worn shorties before, but it’s a style thing so I guess I’ll get used to it. Benefit = ideal if you want a pair of gloves you can stuff in your pocket after a ride.

Summary 7.5/10
If you’re looking for gloves with an emphasis on style - perhaps above other considerations and at the expense of some substance (practicality and safety) - these are for you. Take in account that these are lightweight, 'cruise down to the cafe', street gloves and you won’t be disappointed. I'm glad I got them.

Hoping to buy the Icon Chapter jacket to go with them.

Great looking glove but rough on the hands
I bought these gloves because they match my Icon 1000 jacket. I bought them and they are uncomfortable on long rides. The seams on the inside rub against my hands. I bought them at the store because I saved $10 in comparison to Revzilla. I regret it because if I had bought them on Revzilla, I could have returned them no hassle.

Poor QC tarnishes a cool design.
First pair returned because one glove was shorter, smaller, sloppy stitching, etc. Second pair looked OK, not as nice as promo photo, but I thought I'd stick with them as I really liked the style. Gloves were painful to wear due to lumps of stitching poking into my hands. I trimmed all the loose stitching inside and stuck with it because I figured they needed to stretch out. 3 weeks and 500 miles later they are still painful and I hate wearing them. The stitching that holds the elastic at the base of the fingers is the worst part, big lumps of threads that stab your hands. You can do way better for the money!

Primarily for the look. I ordered the gloves in black. Unfortunately upon receipt of the gloves I noticed the stitching was poorly done and the overall look of the leather was not good, so I returned them. I then later ordered the same pair but in tan. Upon receipt of the gloves they looked awesome, stitching was excellent, and look and feel of the leather was beautiful. Oh and they fit perfectly. Super glad I returned and then later reordered.

I am assuming that this glove does not have touchscreen compatibility since it was not specifically mentioned. It would be great if Icon who is using the Touchtec made nice gloves like these using that product. I use my phone as my MP3 player and GPS and it would be nice not to have to remove my gloves and put them back on to use it.
A shopper on Mar 5, 2012
BEST ANSWER: I was aware that the ICON Justice glove has TouchTec built in when I asked the question, but it is designed more for street/racing type use and conforms to that look as well. These are much nicer looking and I think might be more comfortable for long range cruiser applications which is the type of riding I do.

I am actually rather surprised that ICON did not choose to utilize TouchTec on these gloves considering the difficulty I am having finding any designed for use in the cruiser space. Even Harley doesn't have a pair yet.

Thanks for answering my question though.
The reviews by customers say its a decent cold weather glove. Is it water-proof at all?
Thanks!
A shopper on Jun 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, it is not waterproof, but it could be treated to be waterproof. Since it is aerated it would only slow the penetration into the leather, but that is speculation since I have not tried it. It is a decent for temperatures down to about 50 degrees depending on your tolerance. I have worn liners under them at those levels, but anything below that and you are going to want a different glove.
Using the size chart around the palm I get about 9" which places me in medium. I'd really like to double check this as I currently wear XL RST gloves and havn't gone below a Large size. I have fairly long thin fingers, I'm 6'0 tall, and from the tip of my middle finger to the bottom of my wrist where the crease is, it's 8 1/4 inches, if that helps. Thanks.
A shopper on Jul 2, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Based on the measurements that you provided we would recommend the size Large as well. One of our Gear Geeks has the same measurements and he fits into a size large in these gloves. While he was also able to get the size medium on, it was very tight initially (it's possible that they could stretch out enough to be comfortable after a few hours of riding, but the Large was a much better fit).

We hope that helps. Please remember that if you ever have any questions about sizing that your Gear Geeks would be more than happy to help over the phone or via email as well.
Just wanted to double check the size too, wrapping the tape measure around my palm just below my knuckles I gets 8 1/2" exactly, and from middle finger to wrist is 8 1/2 also. I'm thinking a large, but wanted to check first? Cheers
Julian C on Jun 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I went with the exact way the measuring instrustions said to do it and was very happy. I found the fingers very slight bit long at first but after a week or so they fit great.

Great item

BEST ANSWER: Ugh. Sorry for the repeat answer. The page kept saying it was going to send me a confirmation email. Never got it (no matter how many times I clicked "resend email"), so resubmit using a different browser (twice). Same thing. Refreshed my screen and saw all these answers (well, same answer lots of times). Sorry again for that. Hopefully a site admin will wander through and clean it up.
The reviews say this glove sizes larger than average. My palm is about 8" wide so the size is supposed to be M but I have short fingers (7" palm height, 3" middle finger length) so I am tempted to go with a size S. I usually wear S for non-bike gloves (North Face, etc.) If you have similar hand/finger measurements can you tell me what size fits you?
Cedric B on Jul 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I'm assuming when you measure your palm, It's from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. If this is correct, my hand measures about the same as yours and a large fits me perfectly.
