Dainese Wave Air Back Protector 5 5 5 5
Best fitting of the bunch So I went to the holy land down there on South 26th Street in Philly and tried on a number of competing back protectors. I won't name them, but they are major competitors. For me at least, this Dainese Wave Air fit the best - it was bendable and had the best air flow too. It's only about $50 more than it's competition too. As with all of these, on a hot day, the waist strap will get warm, as it runs across your stomach, blocking most of the air, but it's worth it to have the back protection. I took out the cheapo foam back pads in my jackets and just go with this now - gives me that piece of mind. July 11, 2013
great product, worthy purchase if you're looking for a protector that will stay on your back and has great airflow and great protection this is it. i like that you can strap this to your body so you know it always stays in place. you can adjust the straps depending on your size and when you move around this thing moves with your body so you dont feel all stiff. i havent tried it with my race suit yet but just wearing it with a jacket its perfect. I dont want to find out if it holds up to road rash but looking at this i have no doubt it will do its job if needed. a little pricey but great buy overall May 28, 2013
Great design Very comfortable and super sleek fit, no issues with un-comfort February 25, 2013
Dainese has your back | It's called the 'Air' for a reason For those that don't know - Dainese was the company that first developed a back protector along with MotoGP rider Barry Sheene. The first models were archaic; made from old helmet visors. Of course, Dainese has make huge leaps and bounds since then. The Air most certainly got it's name from it's exceptional ventilation. I have a D-back protector from about five years ago and this thing blows it out of the water. I can't wait for the weather to warm up into the 90s so I can test the comfort even further with the Air. I know that in a crash - Dainese has my back. May 17, 2011
the best back protector I've tried yet I bought this back protector in particular to go under my Dianese/Ducati leathers. I've tried a handful of other back protectors but this one is the lightest and most comfortable and fit the best. The ventilation is leaps and bounds better than any other that I've tried, and while some of my other ones were bulky under my leathers....these fit perfectly and you almost didn't know it was there. Again, as with my previous review of the Dia/shorts I also bought....I can not say enough good about REVZILLA they have the most knowledgeable staff and informative website, and their shipping is unsurpassed. I ordered these items one morning online and they showed up and were on my doorstep from across the state of Pennsylvania before lunch the very next day. A+++ March 7, 2011

Sean N: Dainese have some of the best back protectors and since I race, I wanted the best!!! Apr 22, 2014
David M: I wanted to buy the best protection for myself and felt this was it for my back. Easy to take on and off. I'm tall and this was available in a longer size. I liked the description of the product about the absorbing energy on impact of the aluminum. Jan 4, 2014
Megan F: The wave saved my husbands walking ability!!! Literally if he wasn't wearing this when he wrecked the doctor said he'd be paralyzed. I came to buy another!!!! Thank you Dainese for a awesome product Sep 10, 2013
A shopper asked: Why is there overlap in the size chart? I'm trying to find the best fit. Dec 3, 2013

David S: Due to the area it protects, I don't think there is an exact sizing like a waist line.

For what's is't worth, I have a Medium that fits fine, I am:

155 lbs
Chest 38"
Length from C7 (the last bone in your neck, the one that sticks out) to waist 23"

Scott R: Not sure, but I think the overlap is to accommodate the small lengthening of the waist-to-shoulder measurement in race crouch versus upright posture. (The owners pamphlet/manual doesn't seem to explain it.). I recommend taking measurement both ways. Dec 9, 2013

Ameet(Gayatri) R: Some peoples upper body are bit longer till the tail bone so that is why you have overlap size. Dec 10, 2013
Katsuhiko Y: Because there are various height and combination of a form in fat people and thin person, I guess. Dec 10, 2013

A shopper asked: Is the Dainese Wave Air Back Protector intended to be worn INSIDE of your jacket or race suit? If so, about how thick is it? Jan 2, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Sean N: Hi,

The back protector should be worn under your jacket or leathers. I use it for racing and wear it under my leathers which also has a hump and it is still confortable. The thinkness is roughly 1-1/2" at it's thickest point if you lay it flat on a table but it contours to your back reducing it to roughly 1".

I wanted the best for racing and I trust Dainese back protectors since an older one I had protected me fine in two crashes.

Hope this helps!!!!

William T: *Always* wear a back protector *inside* your leathers. Never outside.

One worn on the outside would get ripped off in 1/100 second in any sort of crash. Outside it's no better than jewelery, it'd be nearly useless.

Thickness is only half the equation, because width matters too.

But it's about an inch thick. Mine fits just fine inside my jacket after I took the stock (thin) OEM foam "protector" out, and it's a pretty closely fitting jacket.

Scott R: Yes this is intended to be worn under a jacket or suit.. [They have made vest versions ("gilet" in Italian), with a buckle belt, more substantial should straps, possibly meant for exterior/interior use].

The wave air is approximately an inch thick, most everywhere. It is made concave for a close fit. This is a one time use protector with "crumple-zone" type extruded aluminum mesh built in ,and is a tad thinner than the Dainese Manis. Hope that helps

Terry B: The Dainese Wave Air Back Protector is worn under your leathers. I have found it to be extremely comfortable and cool to wear. I fit the back protector which is held in position by the shoulder straps and kidney belt and the leathers just slide up and over, no problem. After my friend stacked his Monster and broke his back, shattering L5, I went straight out and ordered one from Revzilla, comfort and peace of mind. Jan 3, 2015

chris c: It will fit inside your track suit. I have a dianese and alpine stars suit. Just need to go up one size. Overall size is a bit larger than my forcefield back protector. But this offers more coverage and stays put, on track sessions. Jan 2, 2015

Justin P: Yes this is meant to be worn under your jacket or suit.

The thickness is probably 3/4". For me that means my suit feels 1"-2" tighter across the chest when I wear this under it.

Cheryl S: I wear mine inside, like other racers, I wear it for Track Days, and once it's on I hardly even feel it, very comfortable, not cumbersome, and very necessary, just adds to the confidence Jan 2, 2015

John E: I wear mine under my leathers, it's about 1.5" thick depending on where you measure it. Jan 2, 2015

Megan F: Yes... inside your jacket or one piece
it is thin yet very very protectant of your spine with a
honeycomb mesh!
It saved my life and I bought another one

A shopper asked: Would it fit under RSD barfly? Oct 28, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
David S: Can't say for certain, but I can tell you I've worn this under all 4 of my MC jackets, ranging from light summer to winter weight with no problems.

I'd say that unless the jacket is already skin tight on you now, there should be room for this protector. It's a nice piece of pro.

The tail section might stick out, some riders tuck that into their pants, although I don't.

A shopper asked: Wave air is only the for back. Was wondering if I can purchase the other two items separately and build it up like the Pro model. More specifically. Interested in adding the chest protector. Apr 7, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (1)
RevZilla: You will not be able to pair the Dainese Wave Air Back Protector with a Dainese chest protector. In order for you to have the best level of protection, you will need a product like the Dainese Thorax Wave Pro or the Wave Chest Pro Protector. Apr 13, 2012
