A great transition face shield This is the first one that I have ever had but i am very pleased with it and it is very convienent on sunny days so you don't have to worry about sunglasses or anything else. I am a newbie when it comes to riding so i did a lot of research to find this product. All the reviews for this were very helpful already and I am just hoping to help someone else. November 9, 2015
Very nice. My first transitions shield and very happy with it. No more fumbling with sunglasses under a clear shield or debating on where and how to carry an alternate colored shield. Darkens / Lightens quickly and efficiently. Gets dark enough to work without sunglasses in bright sunshine - only time when I wished it was darker was heading into an absolutely blaring sunset one evening. Really a joy not to have to deal with sunglasses anymore - just don't forget to bring them along for when you are off the bike.... November 9, 2015
Should Have Gotten Sooner I wish I had gotten this years earlier. It changes tint rapidly and is always just right for conditions. November 2, 2015
Does whatever it advertises Well I have three visors clear black and now the transition SolFx and i'm glad I didn't take the sticker off of it because the first morning I used it I couldn't tell the difference between my clear and it. So I live in Texas and the sun is brutal it does just like it advertises it starts out clear and it gets darker the more sun hits/ UV and that's where things get strange. Because if the UV index is low the shield doesn't get as dark which sometimes it feels like you're not using it at all even though it does have a tent to it And it times I've had it get just as dark as my black visor but then at other times it just becomes a medium smoke. Now I don't know if it's a production issue I've seen some people complain about the reaction time but mine goes from light to dark quite quickly. In fact it's sensitive enough that while playing with it on the porch I set my dark visor in front of it and half the visor immediately went clear as the other half stayed smoked. One other thing about this is cleaning it I've only used dish soap and warm water which really has kept it in great shape no problems no scratches oh and I Use a scratch free cloth.so do I recommended yes do it's just very convenient. It does just what it is supposed to. The Bell transitions shield works great. Fast shift from clear to dark. Firm fit on my qualifier helmet. Very quiet. October 26, 2015
Anti-Fog useless I like the transition and I like the shield, but I don't know what is wrong with mine or if it is with all of these, but when riding in colder temperatures, the shield fogs up real badly or it gets hazy and makes it dangerous to ride with it. I even removed the shield and put on my original shield to see if it is the helmet, but it is definitely the shield. I like the concept but the execution of it was poor or I got a defective shield. Great for commute Living in SIngapore, weather is mostly really sunny, sometimes cloudy with rain and some tunnel on the way. This visor was a great improvement on the stock visor. I sometimes had to look away from sun glare when stopped at the traffic light; but no more! Speed of adjustment is good and it's always the right dark shade so far (not too dark/not too clear). September 28, 2015
Expensive, but solid product First off, it's a shield. It is what it is, but it's nice not having to swap out when the sun goes up and down. It does its job and I have no complaints other than I wish it got just a little bit darker. From the outside it looks plenty dark, but from inside it's not as dark as wearing a pair of sunglasses. My eyes are very sensitive to bright light and I have never experienced any discomfort with this shield, even when facing directly into the sun, so it does its job well. When I received it, the little plastic piece on the side would not stay screwed in on one side due to the hole in the shield being too small for the screw. I had to really work it in with a mini screwdriver to get it to stay in place. Gave 4 stars due to the shield costing more than my helmet (Bell Qualifier), issues with plastic tab being loose, and not quite as dark as I'd hoped. September 22, 2015

Especially since I ride to work in the dark and come home in the light. I normally used to use a Shoei Iridium Mirror tinted visor all of the time and just "lived with" it being super dark at night. Now I won't have to worry about that. Apr 8, 2015
A S: I didnt want to carry two face-shields around with me all the time Apr 7, 2015

Aaron D: I ride at all hours. In and out of day and night. Full-face helmets offer the protection I desire, but don't work well with sunglasses. Along comes the perfect solution! A visor that adjusts automatically to block extra light and offers UV protection on top of that. Mar 17, 2015
Phillip W: I believe the SolFX will make touring just a little more convenient. If it works out to be like Bell's other products, that is to say does what Bell says it will do, it will save me the hassle of changing shields at least twice daily. Mar 8, 2015

A shopper asked: Is it okay to clean the outside of the shield with Plexus? Oct 20, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
OldYeller: I wouldn't. The manufacturer specified warm water and mild soap only and that's what I use. Plexus is a windshield cleaner - likely to include chemicals that could strip off the inside anti-fog coating.

I've never had anything on the shield that warm water and mild dish soap, like palmolive or joy etc didn't easily remove if I give the warm water a little time to soften it up (like bugs).

Also, take seriously the recommendation to avoid paper towels - paper towels will slowly scratch the shield coating.

And NEVER try and clean it or wipe something off it when it's dry.

PAUL N: I've used Plexus on the OUTSIDE of my Transitions shield for a year with no problems. It really helps it water bead up when riding in the rain. Use with a microfiber cloth for easy cleaning. Cleaning the INSIDE is different due to the anti-fog coating. Never use hot water as it will cause the anti-fog coating to delaminate from the shield and "crinkle". Use only cold water, no soap or any other kind of cleaner on the inside. Apr 23, 2014

d15na: Bell recommends only soap and water. What it's sure fire fore me is wet a paper towel with hit water, then drape it over the shield for 2 minutes, then scrub. The bugs come right off, even without soap! Dec 17, 2012

Adam E: Having had mine for over a year, I wouldn't use anything other than soap and water. I've used a few different cleaners on it, and the shield has taken on a yellowish tint even when clear. Aug 29, 2014

MR52: I would not... Plexus is for windscreens and you are talking about a very specialized not sure what exactly is in plexus but to much alcohol or ammonia can damage transition lenses. Mar 29, 2012

William H: I too have transition lenses in my glasses. The shield blocks the UV rays from hitting your glasses so they will not turn darker. But the shield gets really dark during very sunny days and you will have no trouble seeing in direct sunlight. And if you happen to go into a tunnel when the shield is black.....it will quickly lighten in just a few seconds so that you can see again.

It's a great shield and I wouldn't trade it for anything. A definite plus to have because you won't have to carry 2 shields if you are out all day and get back after dark. I highly recommend this product!!!

gilma j: I can say that the photo-chromatic face shield is very much worth the purchase. unfortunately, i am not sure how it will work with your glasses, since i don't wear glasses. i think you should be fine as far tint adjustment goes. the helmet lens is also 99 %uv protection as well. therefore, your eyeglasses shouldn't adjust. just my opinion. hope it helps Oct 20, 2013

Jarret O: I don't have transitions glasses, but according to a Wikipedia on photochromatic lenses (transistions) the lenses are activated by UV light and "filter" it. That to me sounds like the shield would eliminate all/most of the UV before it got to your glasses, which means your glasses would not darken.

Short answer, probably not.

Donald G: I also have transition lenses in my glasses. The shield and the lenses interact. Both darken but the glasses don't get as dark as they would unshielded. Hard to determine precisely but I think they both darken and the the glasses lighten back up as the shield gets darker.
In any event, it all works very well.

Laurence R: Don't know, but I would guess that if your glasses get darker when you're wearing them under a regular smoke visor, then they'll darken with this one. Oct 20, 2013

GregH: The Bell Photo chromatic Shield will fit the Bell Revolver. It can be a little fussy in the attachment phase, but it will fit just fine if you are patient. I don't know why this is, for the original shield will pop on and off in seconds. There must be some minor variation in the detents on the shield that make this more difficult than it has to be. A shopper asked: I purchased this visor with my Bell RS1 and it fogged right away on its first use and still fogs up. Could it be defective? Jan 18, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
MR52: It is possible... I had a Star that came with a defective anti-fog. One drop of water and the whole thing crystallized (would have been a nightmare if it was while riding). My Bell Shields will fog (more of a weird haze than true fog. Simply vent for a second to clear but if it is nearing opaque it is either defective or you just have no venting at all (can cause any shield to get fogged or impaired). Make sure to NEVER use regular lens cleaner on the anti-fog side of the shield or its done. Mar 11, 2012

Richard P: I have a Star with the gradient visor, but the same holds true for yours. Visors fog up. I use an antifog treatment, such as Clarify, and that helps. But even with that I often crack the shield up to the defog position with the lever on the side. Fog goes away when I move, which is what is important. Hope this helps and ride safe. Jan 20, 2012

Nikolai M: My friend told me I had to wash the screen with soap and water to remove a film that is on the visor. He said his filmed up like yours until he did this. I didn't notice any film but I washed it anyways and haven't had any fogging issues. Aug 21, 2012

Julian Andres C asked: Hi. It,s well known thr transitions performance in day light, but how is it in the night? The photochromic festure reacts fast enough to the lights of the cars when in road? Jul 19, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Dennis P: Hi Julian, got about three weeks with this shield and i commute 100 miles round trip every day. I ride to work in the afternoon and come back at night. I've been out on sunny days and cloudy days and the shield always feels perfect and at the right amount of "tint". The fact that i don't need to wear sunglasses while riding is awesome. At night it feels just like the clear oem whithout any distortions or glare from headlights. I would highly recommend it! Revzilla's shipping was fast as usual...pull the triggern you won't regret it!

Jess C: I leave mine on my helmet full time. At night it functions as a normal clear shield with no noticeable tinting. The lights of cars on the road seem to have no effect on it whatsoever.

Additionally, where I live (Pittsburgh, PA) we have a fair number of tunnels and it transitions quickly enough that it is safe to drive the bike into a fairly dark tunnel from full sunlight.

Petello123: The shield does not get really dark. It's a light smoke and helps reduce that drastic bright sun and glare. If you wanna make it darker just wear sunglasses also and it will be just right. I wear sunglasses with mine and its perfect! Hope this helps your choice. May 27, 2013

Timothy B: On Bell Star helmets, there is a lever on the left side that can lock and seal the face shield when pushed one way or crack the face shield to increase circulation when pushed the other way. The black plastic piece is what the lever grabs or pushes against to accomplish this. Apr 7, 2015

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Damien M: Clean the shield on the inside with dish washing liquid and water so it is very clean. Any tiny particles of dirt, dust, or grease from fingerprints will form a base for fog to form. A spray of isopropyl alcohol before you go out will make it super-clean and should not damage the shield.
Use the breath diverter that came with the helmet and never touch the inside of the shield with anything. When you slow down open the visor a crack to allow air to circulate. When you stop open the visor fully.
If none of this works use antifog.

Greg H: I use Plexus and a microfiber cloth to clean my shields; both Arai and the Bell Photochromic shield. After years of doing this I have not noticed any downside. If there was ever any sticker gunk on the shields, I made no notice of it. Also, I treat the inside of the shields with a Nikon fog free cloth and the outside of the shields with Cee Bailey's Rain-B-Gone. After years and thousands of miles the shields look very nearly new. Jason H: You will have an initial conflict until you lower the shield to allow the glasses to adapt but you will have this issue anytime you open your shield for any extended period (refueling, stop lights etc.) so once you drop the shield you will have to deal with increased darkness until the glasses lighten up. Wayne J: It works great. I also wear Transitions lens glasses, and the shield "transitions" almost perfectly in sync with the glasses. You don't get double the effect, since the glasses will only darken as much as they need inside the shield, which is not much. Nov 14, 2013

Steven P: I've had my shield for only one season. It seems to be as good as new. Prior to owning this shield I had a set of pantonics transitions riding glasses. Very high end. 400.00. It seems over time they do lose there ability to tint. Glasses worked great for about 3 to 4 seasons. I've been told when not being used they should be stored in a case or helmet bag. Not in the light.

A shopper asked: How durable is this shield? The clear shield that came with my RS1 is getting pretty crazy pitted/scuffed after only about 2k miles of riding. I'd love one of these transitions shields but I cannot justify dropping this much if it's only going to last half a year. Mar 8, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (1)
timB: For anyone wondering about transition lens longevity. Directly from the Transitions lens web FAQ:
How long do Transitions brand lenses last?

Transitions lenses are designed to last the lifetime of a prescription, which is typically two years.

In order to keep your prescription lenses current, regular, comprehensive eye exams are recommended to determine any prescription changes and help prevent any other eye problems. Talk to your eyecare professional or eye doctor to find out how often you should schedule a visit to preserve your eye health.

So make your own judgement as to longevity

ahkhan1: Hey, i do some intense riding and so far with only normal care (I'll wipe it down maybe once a week), I am still scratch free. This is a durable shield. It is super thick and not only that, the simple stress savings you get from not having to carry around two shields is a perk. I don't necessarily recommend a Bell Helmet for the money conscious buyer (such as myself, although I just dropped a lot on the Black Beauty carbon RSD), although the price of this shield is definitely worth the bang for your buck. Hope this helps. Aug 13, 2012

JoshBK: I have been using my SolFX shield on my RS-1 since march, so only about 3 months now -- but so far they are showing no wear and they work very well. They are actually fairly scratch-proof as well. I bumped the shield into things a couple of times now (and kicked myself every time), and anything that looked like a scratch rubbed right out with a micro fiber cloth.

i have a great deal of confidence in the shield overall -- and also, it is not manufactured by BELL, it's contracted but aftermarket

David R: 1.5 years in for me with heavy use and no pitting, transitions color the same, no issues at all. Remember to take care of your helmet, no shield should ever be scuffed through normal handling. The shield is made by a different company than the makers of the RS-1 shield I believe. May 29, 2013

MR52: I have a few hundred miles on mine, not seeing any issues. Mostly city traffic and a ton of small / medium bug impacts this spring. No rock have whacked the shield yet though, so cannot speak to how that will work out. Mar 29, 2012

Sean M: So far this shield is pretty durable. I live in NYC and have been wearing it for a month. It's worth it, I've got hit in the face with a huge amount of gravel from a construction site and not one scratch. Mar 26, 2012

Imad N: Great question!! Make up remover used carefully with baby wipes and a clean dry cotton cloth. That worked for me but after many days of trying to work it out lol. Mar 23, 2014

John C: I used Googone because it has natural ingredients. I tested the visor and there were no issues with the transition to smoke. Mar 20, 2014
